Opis:
Konflikt między relatywizmem i fundamentalizmem przez wielu socjologów uważany jest za jedno z najważniejszych zjawisk współczesności. Stanowi on zagrożenie dla pokojowego funkcjonowania przestrzeni publicznej. Autor prezentuje stanowiska współczesnych intelektualistów (J. Habermasa, P.L. Bergera, J. Ratzingera), którzy szukają nowych rozwiązań społecznego konsensusu. Artykuł ukazuje znacznie rozumu i religii w kształtowaniu fundamentu aksjologicznego istotnego dla współczesnej agory.
A conflict between relativism and fundamentalism is considered by many sociologists as one of the most important phenomena in the contemporary world. It constitutes a significant risk for peaceful coexistence in the public space. The paper presents the positions of many contemporary intellectuals (inter alia: J. Habermas, P.L. Berger, J. Ratzinger) who are looking for new solutions for social discourse which would be based on consensus and social dialogue. Moreover, this article underlines the importance of reason and religion in creating an axiological fundation essential for contemporary agora.

Opis:
The main theme of the paper is the issue of the foundations of social life. The author begins by outlining the tradition of the Enlightenment represented by Immanuel Kant, who attempted to justify rationally the basis of social life. Then she moves back to antiquity, to Plato, the sophists and Aristotle, to show their attitude towards the foundations of public life in order to briefly present in the following stage the original concept of Baruch Spinoza and, in more details, the views of Blaise Pascal, who is the main figure of this presentation. The final part of the paper includes a draft of the philosophical thought of postmodernism, represented by such intellectuals as Michel Foucault, Richard Rorty and Jürgen Habermas. The author additionally presents an exposition of the concept of habitus by Pierre Bourdieu, interpreting it accordingly to her previous reflections. The course of thought in these considerations intends to formulate a thesis which takes a stand against the most obvious opinion of Enlightenment, purporting that neither the contemporary liberal democracy nor people’s respect for it and their will to obey the law are founded on reason.

Opis:
The article exhibits the Postmodern consciousness and changes that are still taking place within the Western societies. The last four–five years had brought new challenges to the political system and these had been surprisingly supported by the significant portions of population, the event deemed impossible only six–seven years ago. The slightly similar in its surprising success change was the accent of Neoliberalism, the theory of which, previously had been perceived only as a theory but suddenly there was “No Alternative” as was famously put by Margaret Thatcher, the “Iron Lady”. This event, came as a surprise as, for instance, not many expected the success of Neoliberalism due to the public outcry. However, the outcry had not been wild at all. In contemporary time, however, the change is coming from the substantial part of the populace which was indeed surprising. The article, therefore, aims to bring to the fore the Postmodern consciousness that might have played a decisive role in the social and political turbulence of last years and is correlated to the rise of the right and the rise of populism. The article also sheds light on the scientific discourse within Political Sociology on Postmodern trends in the Western societies.

Opis:
The chief aim of this paper is to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt how, through an essential misunderstanding of the nature of philosophy, and science, over the past several centuries, the prevailing Western tendency to reduce the whole of science to mathematical physics unwittingly generated utopian socialism as a political substitute for metaphysics. In short, being unable speculatively, philosophically, and metaphysically to justify this reduction, some Western intellectuals re-conceived the natures of philosophy, science, and metaphysics as increasingly enlightened, historical and political forms of the evolution of human consciousness toward creation of systematic science, a science of clear and distinct ideas. In the process they unwittingly wound up reducing contemporary philosophy and Western higher education largely into tools of utopian socialist political propaganda.
