Opis:
A Passive Coherent Location (PCL) Radar system, consisting of spatially distributed transmitters and receivers is currently being integrated at the University of Cape Town (UCT). The paper investigates the feasibility of real-time processing of PCL system signals using Graphic Processing Units (GPUs), specifically a study of two distinct clutter cancellation algorithms: ECA (Extensive Cancellation Algorithm) and NLMS (Normalised Least Mean Square). Clutter cancellation is the most computationally demanding part of PCL signal processing. This investigation compares the processing speed-up achieved by GPU over CPU implementations, with very encouraging results.

Sequential pattern mining is an extensively studied method for data mining. One of new and less documented approaches is estimation of statistical characteristics of sequence for creating model sequences, that can be used to speed up the process of sequence mining. This paper proposes extensive modifications to one of such algorithms, ProMFS (probabilistic algorithm for mining frequent sequences), which notably increases algorithm's processing speed by a significant reduction of its computational complexity. A new version of algorithm is evaluated for real-life and artificial data sets and proven to be useful in real-time applications and problems.

In order to guarantee the accuracy of turntable angle measurement, a real-time compensation method for turntable positioning precision based on harmonic analysis is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the principle and feasibility of the real-time compensation method are analysed, and a detailed description of harmonic compensation is provided herein. Secondly, we analyse the relationships between the surface number of the polygon with the compensation order of the harmonic function and its corresponding compensation accuracy. The effects of the iterations number and the data width on calculation accuracy in the coordinate rotation digital computer (CORDIC) algorithm are analysed and the quantization models of the approximation error and rounding error of the CORDIC algorithm are established. Then, the calculation of the harmonic error function and real-time compensation processes are implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. The resource occupation and time delay of the phase angle calculation and the harmonic component calculation are discussed separately. Finally, the validity of the harmonic compensation method is proven through comparing the compensation effect with that of linear interpolation and the polynomial compensation method. The influences of the compensation order, the iterations number and the data width on the compensation results are demonstrated by simulation. A test platform with a laboratory-made FPGA circuit is built to evaluate the effect of real-time compensation with the harmonic function and the positioning error compensation can be performed within 760 ns. The results confirmed the effectiveness of the harmonic compensation method, revealing an improvement of the positioning precision from 54.21ʹʹ to 1.63ʹʹ, equivalent to 96.99% reduction in positioning error.

Currently there is growing interest in unmanned shipping. In the case of unmanned ‘autonomous’ shipping, navigation is automated by on-board decision-making systems. Important motives for unmanned ships include the shortage of skilled mariners, the facilitation of slow steaming strategies, efficiency improvements in confined shipping areas, and increased safety. The aim of the present research is to simulate an unmanned ship through an Automatic Identification System (AIS) based traffic situation. In order to do this, the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) will use the existing simulation technology Dolphin, implement a new tool to read AIS data, simulate a large amount of ships, and develop an auto-captain. The real-time dynamic risk index developed by MARIN will be integrated in Dolphin, to monitor nautical safety of all ships with focus on the unmanned ship. The simulated unmanned ship will navigate according to the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). In more complex situations, the auto-captain may use a dedicated decision support tool to find a more efficient solution to pass safely. This approach will be analysed using the real-time dynamic risk index, which will be updated based on latest insights. This paper will discuss the latest development and plans in the unmanned ship simulation project.

This paper deals with the image processing from the camera for Raspberry Pi connected with real-time communication network to the control system (PLC). The low time delay for receiving and sending commands, data, etc. is very important in the automating production processes. This can be provided by industrial real-time network based on Ethernet. The Ethernet POWERLINK, which is supported on B&R PLCs, is one of them. It is a simple solution for a variety of applications because the POWERLINK is publicly available as the open source. Connecting the PLC and Raspberry Pi with Ethernet POWERLINK opens up many applications in industrial automation. For example, image data obtained using a camera attached to Raspberry Pi can be used to sense image of manufacturing processes and products and evaluate their quality in industrial automation. This article focuses on an image processing unit and the PLC system with CPU redundancy used in the industrial application. Vision systems are often used to improve products quality control, saving costs and time.

A variety of algorithms allows gesture recognition in video sequences. Alleviating the need for interpreters is of interest to hearing impaired people, since it allows a great degree of self-sufficiency in communicating their intent to the non-sign language speakers without the need for interpreters. State-of-the-art in currently used algorithms in this domain is capable of either real-time recognition of sign language in low resolution videos or non-real-time recognition in high-resolution videos. This paper proposes a novel approach to real-time recognition of fingerspelling alphabet letters of American Sign Language (ASL) in ultra-high-resolution (UHD) video sequences. The proposed approach is based on adaptive Laplacian of Gaussian (LoG) filtering with local extrema detection using Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST) algorithm classified by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The recognition rate of our algorithm was verified on real-life data.

Opis:
Many of new programmable ICs like micro-controllers, PLDs and other devices feature some kind of ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) standard. Such devices can be programmed, reprogrammed or checked while soldered in the application circuit, using only a few lines and a special connector. This technology is very useful for the designer, however each manufacturer uses it 's own ICSP standard and dedicated programming device. This means that sometimes even a single application need a few different programmers and connectors. To overcome this problems a single very universal ICSP programmer was build. The article presents software driver and hardware implementation of the proposed programmer. To reduce design time very simple hardware was chosen - programmer does not have any "build in" intelligence and places all control tasks on the PC and software. Block schematic and a description of the modules and their connections is presented. To enable fast data transmission rate and provide good time resolution a hard real-time operation systems is needed. The software driver is written under QNX - very fast, reliable and well known OS. Description and general algorithm of the software driver and library is given. While ICSP programming is the main task, programmer also can be used as a digital I/O device for a PC. During about 2 years of use many communication protocols was implemented, not only for ICSP programming but also for debugging, control or testing of other applications. Concurrently author is working on RTAI Linux driver for the programmer to enable using it under that platform.
Wiele nowych programowalnych układów scalonych jak mikrokontrolery, układy PLD i inne posiada mechanizm ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming - programowanie szeregowe wewnątrz układu). Aby temu zaradzić, zaprojektowany i zbudowany został uniwersalny programator ICSP. W artykule przedstawiono programowy sterownik i sprzętowy układ programatora.

The primary objective of the case study is to improve monitoring, controlling, planning and managing the extraction processes in surface lignite mining. Under the North Bohemian Lignite Basin (also Most Basin) conditions and the Sokolov Basin, wheeled excavators are deployed as the main technology for extracting coal and overlying rock. Their real-time spatial position can be tracked based on data from GNSS technology, inclinometers, and incremental rotary encoders. The measured data is sent to a remote server and stored in the database. It also serves to calculate volumes of extracted masses. Volume calculation, space position visualisation, and wheel boom movements are performed in KVASoftware. It is a program designed for modelling and designing quarries. Knowing the position of the wheel against the digital terrain (quarry), the model is essential for the implementation of many risk-elimination applications, namely with respect to the geological conditions, occupational safety, observance of the profile grade line, the area of extraction, qualitative parameters of the raw material, etc. The mathematical model of backfilling extracted materials is also an integral part of the above-mentioned system.
