ObjectivesIn the present study, the authors focused on the comparison of work characteristics related to the possibility of striking the right work–nonwork balance, as well as satisfaction with the actual work–life balance (WLB), negative work-to-home conflict and the quality of life related to social relationships, between a new group of on-line workers (social media or e-marketing specialists, search engine optimization or search engine marketing specialists, e-public relations experts etc.) and traditional office workers.Material and MethodsThe authors conducted a questionnaire study covering 189 on-line workers (whose work required permanent presence on-line) and 200 office workers (using the Internet mainly to communicate with other departments and to search for information).ResultsThe results showed that the on-line workers reported a significantly lower satisfaction with WLB and a higher negative work-home interaction. The authors found no differences as regards the social quality of life between the studied groups.ConclusionsThese findings confirm that technology advancement opens a new chapter in organizational psychology and occupational health, especially in the context of the emerging on-line occupations.

Opis:
Objectives Aim of this study was to assess and compare health, quality of life, well-being, job satisfaction and job insecurity between nurses, in a tertiary hospital in Greece, working either under permanent or temporary contract. Material and Methods In this cross-sectional study, consecutively recruited nurses answered a structured questionnaire, the WHO-5 Well-being Index (WHO-5), the Job Insecurity Index (JII), the Work Ability Index (WAI), and the Well-Being at Work Scale (WBWS). Results Included were 323 nurses (87.6% women, age M±SD 43.68±8.10 years). Temporary contract employees had worse quality of life (p = 0.009) and higher job insecurity: both in cognitive dimension (p = 0.013) and emotional dimension (p < 0.001). They also scored worse in the positive affect (p < 0.001), negative affect (p = 0.002) and fulfillment of expectations in work environment (p < 0.001) domains of the WBWS. Additionally, they reported less frequently occupational accidents and injuries (p = 0.001), musculoskeletal disorders of the spine or neck (p = 0.007), cardiovascular (p = 0.017), and gastrointestinal (p = 0.010) disorders, while they reported more frequently mental disorders (p < 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that temporary work predicted high cognitive (p = 0.010) and emotional (p < 0.001) insecurity, low positive emotions and mood index (p = 0.007), low achievement-fulfillment index (p = 0.047) and high index of negative emotions (p = 0.006), regardless of gender and age. Conclusions Temporary employment among nurses is associated with a lower sense of job security and well-being, and a higher prevalence of mental disorders, independently of age or gender without a significantly negative effect on their ability to work. Managers, as well as occupational physicians, should recognize the extent of nurses’ job insecurity and assess their ability to work, to provide them with the necessary support and to stimulate the sense of occupational security and work capacity, so that they can thrive in their workplace and therefore be more productive and provide high quality healthcare.

Opis:
Introduction: The return to work of patients who undergo spinal surgery poses important medical and social challenge. Objectives: 1) To establish whether patients who undergo spinal stenosis surgery later return to work. 2) To establish the patient's attitude towards employment. 3) To assess the quality of life of the patients and its influence on their attitude to work. Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of 58 patients aged from 21 to 80 years (the mean age was 52.33±14.12). There were 29 women (50%) and 29 men (50%) in the group. The patients' quality of life was measured by the use of the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. Individual interviews were conducted 3 to 8 months (a mean of 5.72 months ±1.6) after the surgery. Results: 1) Although 13 patients (22.3%) returned to work, 44 (75.9%) did not, these being manual workers of vocational secondary education. 2) Almost half of the patients (27 patients, i.e. 44%) intend to apply for disability pension, 16 patients (27.6%) consider themselves unfit to work, 22 patients (37.9%) do not feel like working again. 3) The quality of life of the patients decreased. Domain scores for the WHOQOL-BREF are transformed to a 0-100 scale. The mean physical health amounted to 60.67 (±16.31), the mean psychological health was 58.78 (±16.01), while the mean social relations with family and friends were 59.91 (±20.69), and the mean environment 59.62 (±12.48). Conclusions: 1) A total of 75% of the patients operated for lumbar spinal stenosis do not return to their preoperative work. Difficulties in returning to work and decreased quality of life are associated with female sex, lower-level education, hard physical work and low income. 2) Physical health, psychological health, social relations and environment decreased to the mean of approximately 60. 3) The quality of life of the patients who did return to work was similar to that of healthy people.

ObjectivesThe aim of this work was to assess the work ability, health status, disability and quality of life of working people of pre-retirement and retirement age, as well as to analyze factors affecting the ability to perform work in older age.Material and MethodsA cross-sectional pilot study was conducted in the Podkarpackie and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships, Poland, in randomly selected workplaces of intellectual nature. It was carried out by means of direct interviews in the workplace of the surveyed people, using the Work Ability Index, a questionnaire based on the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0, the WHO Quality of Life-BREF questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The criteria for inclusion were: age 55–75 years and informed consent to participate in the study. Overall, 201 complete questionnaires were included in the analysis. Demographic data is presented using descriptive statistics measurements. The logistic regression model was used to identify factors related to work ability.ResultsThe vast majority (69.66%) of employees performing intellectual work had moderate or poor work ability. The average level of general disability in the studied group was mild (20.65), and the quality of life was quite good (64.73). A significant problem among the surveyed people was a quite high average level of pain (VAS = 3.99), the occurrence of depression (73.63%), as well as musculoskeletal (64.18%) and cardiovascular diseases (52.24%). The most important factor contributing to a better work ability was the adaptation of the workplace to functional and healthrelated needs (OR = 7.79). Psychological well-being (OR = 1.12), cognitive performance (OR = 0.97) and a smaller number of chronic diseases (OR = 0.58) were also important factors.ConclusionsPreparation of elderly people for professional activity should be conducted in 2 different ways, i.e., by means of education and implementation of an active, healthy lifestyle, and increasing control over one’s own health and factors determining it, as well as by the proper organization of working space, and quick access to treatment and rehabilitation, especially in the case of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases.

Technical progress caused that job is easier and faster, the level of job security increased and the health condition of employees improved. On the other hand the job market is shrinking and the unemployment increases, the level of work monotony grows and the social ties weaken. Those phenomena can be co-unteracted by the humanization of work. Its methods, among others, are: job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, secondary tasks, autonomous work group and Lothar Schneder's model of shuttle four-day-working week as being the proposal of the unemployment reduction through sharing the work.

Artykuł kończy tabelaryczne podsumowanie wybranych danych empirycznych, które obrazuje powiązania pomiędzy jakością życia a rozumieniem relacji rodzina–praca w kategoriach konfliktu bądź facylitacji.
The aim of the article is to present selected theoretical concepts relating to the problem of balancing family and professional life. The key factor has become the discussion of the approach, developed in the literature on the subject, that captures this relationship in terms of conflict (work– family, family–work). This approach for a long time was dominant in research on the balancing of family and professional roles. The article also discusses a theoretical approach pointing to the positive role of activities aimed at transferring resources and competences between roles. The article ends with a tabular summary of selected empirical data that illustrates the links between the quality of life and the understanding of the family–work relationship in terms of conflict or facilitation.

Opis:
A two-career marriage is a modern family model, within which both partners pursue a career as employees, often in leadership positions, but also a career associated with holding specific roles in the family, marriage and the household. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the level of work engagement and the subjective quality of marital relationships. Moreover, the research attempted to find variables which may mediate the relationship, such as levels of occupational stress experienced, conflict / facilitation of occupational and personal roles and gender. The study was conducted among 150 two-career married couples, with both partners working actively on the competitive labour market, often holding leadership positions and balancing their professional and family roles. All of the participants, aged 28 to 40, had completed higher education and had at least 1 child. The study used the Work-related Behaviour and Experience Pattern Test (AVEM), Well-Matched Marriage Questionnaire (KDM-2), Stress Questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Work and Family Balance. Statistical analysis indicated that work involvement of two-career couples positively contributes to increasing the subjectively perceived quality of their marital relationships. The level of occupational commitment also has a positive relationship with the level of stress experienced and work – family conflicts. Such stress and conflicts are important mediators in the positive relationship between work involvement and the quality of marital relationship. Therefore, if the partners’ work is linked to significant stress, generating additional work-family conflicts, it may consequently negatively affect the quality of marital relations of the dyads.

The aim of this research article is to obtain an answer to the question about the perceived quality of life in the working environment and its determinants, based on the results of surveys conducted in 2017 on a representative sample of 308 professionally active residents of West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The human expectations to work and the manner of its assessment depend on many the most frequently interrelated factors. The most important for the work satisfaction the respondents considered job stability and security, good relationships with co-workers, amount of remuneration and superior’s fairness. The first two mentioned factors and furnishing of the workplace with the equipment and materials needed are those aspects of the work environment with which the respondents are most satisfied. In general, most respondents are rather satisfied or satisfied with their work, but the average level of satisfaction with this area of the quality of life is lower than the average level of satisfaction with life in general.

Objectives Identifying factors predictive of early return to work in patients who underwent a coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). Material and Methods Two hundred twenty-six working patients who volunteered and underwent a primary coronary artery bypass surgery between September 2013 and May 2014 were selected for the study and followed up for 6 months. Predictors of early return to work (RTW) (within 2 months) were analyzed from variables in a prospectively collected database and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire carried out in the hospital and rehabilitation center as well as from the follow-up performed via the phone. Results One hundred and two (45.1%) and 155 (68.9%) patients returned to work within 2 and 3 months after the surgery, respectively. Furthermore, 196 patients (87.1%) returned to work within 6 months after the surgery. In the univariate analysis, demographic or socioeconomic factors (such as age, level of education, income), occupational factors (such as occupation type, working hours per week, duration of the preoperative absence from work), psychological factors (such as a patient’s concern about adverse health effects of RTW, feeling depressed, a patient’s attitude towards his/her ability to RTW and a patient’s perception of his/her job stress level) and medical factors (such as serum troponin T and creatine kinase MB (CKMB) level, pump time in surgery, co-surgery and dyslipidemia history) had a statistically significant correlation with early return to work. The patients who early returned to work had significantly higher scores in 3 domains on the SF-36 questionnaire (used for assessing the patients’ quality of life), compared to those who did not return to work early (including physical functioning, role limitations due to physical health and pain). Conclusions In the present study we identified 4 new medical factors that could be used as predictors of early return to work after CABG. These factors are: normal serum troponin T level, shorter pump time in surgery, normal mean arterial pressure (MAP) before the surgery and higher serum magnesium (Mg) levels. Background: The fact that professional activity is reduced is a very challenging experience for persons with cancer whose sense of self-worth is linked to their work. Not only does cancer often become the reason for their deteriorated socio-economic position but it also reduces the quality of life assessment in cancer patients. Material and Methods: The aim of the study was to discover the sense and meaning that women with cancer ascribe to their professional work. The research was carried out among 6 women diagnosed with cancer, aged 32–49 years. A qualitative research strategy was adopted in the study and interpretative phenomenological analysis was applied. Results: Based on the conducted research, when faced with cancer, the respondents often perceive professional work as a factor that triggers cancer and, at the same time, one that can increase their self-esteem, giving meaning to their life. It, therefore, seems crucial to support the professional activity of cancer patients and to create jobs promoting health. Conclusions: When working with a person suffering from cancer, it is worth considering the possibilities that returning to work is likely to carry. It is important to create such jobs and work environments that would be consistent with the concept of health promotion. It seems that the key factors here are the appointment of persons responsible for the return process of a person with a chronic illness, accompanied by efficient communication between the employer and occupational health services, and efficient exchange of information between the treating physician and the workplace (with the employee’s consent).

In the paper the issues of work satisfaction as part of life satisfaction are discussed. The research problem included the link between terminal values, instrumental values or values connected with scientific fulfilment and work satisfaction of academics. The results of the conducted research show that work satisfaction is dependent on observing terminal values at work. The more values a person feels observed, the more satisfied with work he or she is and vice versa. Terminal values have more influence on work satisfaction than instrumental ones or values connected with scientific fulfilment. The analysis of the results helped to define plans for future research, showing the need to find the causes of work satisfaction, including unique conditions of the examined profession.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wybrane aspekty wpływające na kształtowanie jakości życia mieszkańców. Oceny jakości życia dokonano w oparciu o czynniki obiektywne i subiektywne.
The article presents some aspects that affect the development of the quality of life. The quality of life was based on objective and subjective factors. The objective factors are, among other things, the average monthly gross wage, unemployment rate registered. Quality of life due to subjective factors was based on a survey conducted among the residents of Podkarpacie. It is difficult to determine a clear definition of the concept of quality of life. Each of us understands it differently. For some, it is enough to meet the basic needs and the availability of appropriate material goods. In turn, for the others most important are security, human relations and the realization of life plans. The level of quality of life is affected by many factors, among others, having employment and related appropriate remuneration. In 2014, gross salary in Poland exceeded 4 thousand PLN. However, the level of remuneration in Podkarpackie was much lower, because it does not exceed 3.5 thousand PLN. Research shows that the people of Podkarpacie are most afraid of dismissal, which was indicated by almost 60% of respondents. Job loss causes a decrease or loss of income, changing lifestyle and often deteriorating state of physical and mental health. In the study, the biggest impact in terms of the quality of life of the inhabitants of Podkarpacie is put on health, education, the level of wealth and income levels. The quality of life is affected by a number of factors, which vary depending on the socio-economic situation of the country concerned. In addition, problems as well as emerging opportunities which we encounter in everyday life affect the assessment of the quality of life. Currently, one of the aspects, which greatly affects the quality of life is work.

Opis:
Objectives To investigate the aspects of return to work, socio-economic and quality of life aspects in 145 employed patients under 60 years of age treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Material and Methods During hospital treatment demographic and clinical data was collected. Data about major adverse cardiovascular events, rehabilitation, sick leave, discharge from job and retirement, salary, major life events and estimation of quality of life after myocardial infarction were obtained after follow-up (mean: 836±242 days). Results Average sick leave was 126±125 days. Following myocardial infarction, 3.4% of patients were discharged from their jobs while 31.7% retired. Lower salary was reported in 17.9% patients, major life events in 9.7%, while 40.7% estimated quality of life as worse following the event. Longer hospitalization was reported in patients transferred from surrounding counties, those with inferior myocardial wall and right coronary artery affected. Age, hyperlipoproteinemia and lower education degree were connected to permanent working cessation. Significant salary decrease was observed in male patients. Employer type was related to sick leave duration. Impaired quality of life was observed in patients who underwent in-hospital rehabilitation and those from surrounding counties. Longer sick leave was observed in patients with lower income before and after myocardial infarction. These patients reported lower quality of life after myocardial infarction. Conclusions Inadequate health policy and delayed cardiac rehabilitation after myocardial infarction may lead to prolonged hospitalization and sick leave as well as lower quality of life after the event, regardless of optimal treatment in acute phase of disease.

Opis:
Objectives Work ability may be considered as an important aspect of well-being and health status. One of the most important factors in association with work ability is health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study has been to determine the association between work ability, individual characteristics and HRQoL of female workers. Material and Methods The design of this study has been cross-sectional. The work ability index (WAI) and Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-12) questionnaires were used to collect data. Three hundred and twenty female workers were selected from food supplier factories in Karaj. One-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation analysis, independent sample t-test and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze data. Results Mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of the WAI stood at 35.02 and 5.57, respectively. The categories of the WAI for women being as follows: 8.8% poor, 62% moderate, 25.4% good and 3.7% excellent. Mean±SD for the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of quality of life was 58.84±11.12 and 57.45±9.94, respectively. There was a positive significant association between the PCS and MCS with the WAI (p = 0.0001). Workers with higher education had a better work ability (p = 0.002) and shift-work workers had a worse work ability (p = 0.03). Conclusions Work ability of majority of women was moderate. Considering mean age of studied women (27.6 years old), this work ability is not satisfactory. Physical and mental components of the HRQoL were the important factors associated with work ability.
