Opis:
Liver transplantation has become one of the most effective treatments for end-stage renal disease. For patients, however, the decision to have orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is often made in an effort to improve their quality of life and to reduce their risk of mortality and morbidity. Quality of life is an important aspect of therapy for transplant patients because this category reflects the subjective evaluation of one's own life in the physical, psychological and social dimensions. One of the means to achieve a better quality of life is not only good health, but also physical activity. Physical activity has been demonstrated to be of significance not only in the assessment of fitness levels but also could be of importance in long term recovery process after major surgical operations. The aim of this study was a review of literature showing the improved quality of life in patients after liver transplantation as well as the influence of physical activity on their physical health, mental health and quality of life after transplantation. Longitudinal data showed remarkable improvement of common domains of QOL comparing pre- and post-transplant items. Gender, occupation and regular physical activity have an influence on the quality of life after liver transplantation.

The main aim of the article is an attempt to determine the importance of a targeted form of physical activity, i.e. Pilates, on psychomotor functions in women who practice this method. It seems important to search for appropriate, socially recognized values which promote health and are conducive to a health-oriented lifestyle, especially among women in middle adulthood. The study was based on a natural experiment involving 40 middle-aged women who participated in Pilates classes from the beginning of October 2013 to the end of September 2014. The one-year Pilates programme was found to have a significant impact on improving the participants’ health awareness. The study indicates an improvement in elements of physical fitness, especially in the first (known as enthusiastic) stage of participation (from October 2013 to April 2014). Over the course of the year, significant differences were found in the measurements of all the selected elements of physical fitness. The greatest progress was recorded in body flexibility. It can be concluded that targeted exercises improve physical fitness, particularly body flexibility, contribute to reducing low back pain, thereby improving the quality of life.

Opis:
Introduction: The paper presents the results of the interaction analysis between physical activity (PA), joy of movement (PACES) and areas of quality of life (SQUALA) of high school students with different levels of sport performance and different ages. These factors have wider background. Phenomenon of the subjective assessment “PACES” is stepping to the foreground. “PACES” proves high frequency of interactions with the areas of SQUALA, more than a single volume of PA. Despite of enough PA in week and high level of PACES, no expected interactions with areas of SQUALA in high school students were demonstrated. The low number of positive interactions points to the necessity of monitoring this construct, also in the relation to gender, to different sports level, type of school, region, country and age. Material and Methods: The survey was attended by 16-19 years old (n = 1302) high school students. The quality of life was examined through SQUALA questionnaire, enjoyment of physical activities by the PACES questionnaire and the level of physical activity in hours per week (PAQ) and by sport level. The data are presented by the descriptive characteristics and statistical significance of the differences, respectively the interactions were evaluated by nonparametric methods. Results: The interactions between PA, PACES and SQUALA in high school students with different sports level with different ages have been proven very sporadically. Positive correlations of PA with areas of SQUALA prevails in 18 and 19 years old students. The joy of movement correlates with spiritual well-being in groups of students who carry out the physical activities occasionally and regularly. Positive interactions of joy of movement with physical well-being have not been proven. Negative interactions between the PA, PACES and SQUALA prevails between 16 and 17 years old students. Conclusion: The higher age factor and factor of the regular movement in high school students appears to be very important in this study. The results reaffirm the importance of voluntary and organized physical activities which have potential to raise the level of the joy from the movement in life of high school students.

Opis:
Background: Physical activity (PA) has a positive effect on human health at all ages and it is especially important in older people. When insufficient, it may lead to the deterioration of a person’s health status. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the declared PA of the Universities of the Third Age (U3A) students and to examine the relationship between the level of PA, physical performance, and quality of life in this population. Material and methods: The study included 99 subjects, aged ≥60 years, with a Mini Mental State Examination score ≥24. Participants were examined using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire, the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), the Activities of Daily Living scale (ADL), the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale (IADL), and the short form of the geriatric depression scale (GDS). Handgrip strength (HS) was measured using the baseline hydraulic dynamometer. Results: Statistically significant differences in the results of women and men were demonstrated in 5 variables: the level of PA measured with the IPAQ, physical component summary of the SF-36 questionnaire, the total SPPB score, HS of the dominant hand and the non-dominant hand. In all examinations, men obtained higher scores than women. Positive correlations between PA and the result of the ADL, IADL, SPPB, HS and physical component summary of the SF-36 questionnaire were shown. Conclusions: The study confirmed that the participants of the U3A classes mostly meet the recommendations regarding minimum PA and they willingly undertake regular PA. It translates into high functional and physical fitness, stronger muscles and a good QoL.

Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate a relationship between weekly physical activity and quality of life in elderly women. Methods: Participants were 22 elderly women ≥ 60 years (mean age 66 . 27 ± 4 . 99) with weight ≥ 50kg (mean weight 74.84 ± 14. 87kg) from Nitra. In this pilot study we used 2 questionnaires. The assessment of quality of life (QoL) was conducted by Short - Form General H ealth Survey (SF - 36). To examine weekly physical activity we selected International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Both questionnaires were evaluated separately by standardized scoring manual for SF - 36 and IPAQ. To examine a relationship between r esults of SF - 36 and IPAQ we used non - parametric Spearman's correlation coefficient (r s ). Results: The results from IPAQ show significant relationship between quantity and quality of weekly physical activity and age (r s = - 0. 562). More significant relations hips were found in results from SF - 36. The results showed significant relationship between domain of Vitality (r s = - 0. 508), Social Functioning (r s = - 0. 634), Mental Health (r s = - 0. 537), Mental Health Summary (r s = - 0. 549) and age. There was also signific ant relationship between domain of Vitality (r s = - 0. 598), Mental Health (r s = - 0. 505), Mental Health Summary (r s = - 0. 505) and weight. In this study, the results did not show relationship between weekly physical activity and domains from SF - 36. Conclusion s: According to the results from both questionnaires we follow the age - related decline of weekly physical activity, vitality and mental health. In our study, questionnaires IPAQ and SF - 36 did not show relationship between each other. For the further invest igation we intend to use different questionnaires for elderly people or we could measure the physical activity with pedometer or other new devices which are now available on the market.

Introduction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive joint condition that leads to joints destruction and complications in the internal organs and significantly affects the a patient’s functional, physical, psychological and social condition. Over the last few years, research into the quality of life (QoL) in people with chronic disease has been conducted to assess the results of treatment. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess QoL in various areas of life in regards to physical and mental functioning, social relations, and environmental influences in people with RA. Material and methods. The study group (subjects with RA) and the control group (subjects without RA) consisted of 48 people each. Subject age ranged from 19 to 68. In order to assess QoL, the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was used, while socio-demographic data were assessed with a questionnaire developed by the authors. Results. QoL in people with RA was lower than that of healthy individuals. The worst QoL was observed in the physical domain. No statistically significant association was found between BMI and QoL. It was found, however, that subjects with RA and a higher level of physical activity had a better QoL than those with a lower level of physical activity. Conclusion. There was no association between the body mass of RA patients and QoL assessment. However, an association was found between the level of physical activity in people with RA and QoL in the physical and environmental domain.

Introduction: Regular physical activity is associated with physical, and mental benefits, whilst insufficient physical activity (PA) is associated with number of negative health outcomes (e.g. metabolic syndrome, brain health, cognitive functions, insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, sarcopenia, coronary heart disease etc.). In our systematic overview, we look into relationship between participation on regular PA and health of young people. Material and methods: Electronic databases were searched for articles related to connection between PA and correlated diseases in young man. Results: The search resulted in 137 identified records of which 54 records articles were included in the presented review. Conclusions: Based on our findings, we recognize that human body rapidly maladapts to insufficient PA, and if extended for a longer period of time, it will result in substantial decline of health. Altogether, conclusive evidence exists that physical inactivity is one of the most important cause of most chronic diseases. In addition, PA especially in younger age can primarily prevents, or delays chronic diseases, assuming that chronic diseases may not be an inevitable outcome throughout life. Our review suggests that PA exert substantial positive effect on health of young men, however, to reach a true consensus, the mechanism behind these observations must be further elucidated.

INTRODUCTION: The study of health-related quality of life is an indication of the tendencies of modern medical-social sciences on preventive activities related to health promotion.. Such studies supplement objective health indicators of a medical character with subjective feelings of the subjects. Most of the research results presented in publications in this field concern mainly patients suffering from different diseases. In the context of promoting healthy behaviors, it is particularly important to study the quality of life of healthy people involved in physical activity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 75 adult people were involved in the study (women = 24; men = 51). They were members of associations promoting physical activity in the area of Zaglebie Dabrowskie (Poland). The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36v2) was used to assess health-related quality of life. RESULTS: The physical aspect of quality of life (70.0 ± 5.0 points) was less favourably appraised than the psychological aspect (87.0 ± 14.9 points). A statistically significant difference between women (61.0 ± 4.6 points) and men (64.0 ± 3.3 points) was observed on the subscale: role limitation – physical problems. The average results of the surveyed people’s health-related quality of life were higher than the mean general population results. CONCLUSIONS: People involved in associations promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle attain higher average results in health-related quality of life than the norms of the general population. The high assessment of mental health maybe connected with the positive relationship between physical activity and well-being. It may also be suggested that people involved in associations promoting a healthy lifestyle establish positive relationships with each other, which may favor a high assessment of social functioning.
MATERIAŁ I METODY: Badaniami objęto 75 osób dorosłych (kobiety n = 24, mężczyźni n = 51), członków stowarzyszeń promujących rekreacyjną aktywność fizyczną z terenu Zagłębia Dąbrowskiego (osoby regularnie aktywne fizycznie). Jako narzędzie badawcze wykorzystano polską wersję kwestionariusza The Short Form Health Survey w wersji drugiej (SF-36v2). WYNIKI: Aspekt fizyczny jakości życia został oceniony mniej korzystnie (70,0 ± 5,0 pkt) od aspektu psychicznego (87,0 ± 14,9 pkt). Istotną statystycznie różnicę pomiędzy badanymi kobietami (61,0 ± 4,6 pkt) i mężczyznami (64,0 ± 3,3 pkt) zaobserwowano w podskali: „ograniczenia roli − problemy fizyczne”.

This paper contributes to the literature by showing that discrepancies in leisure time physical activity between transition and non-transition countries are mainly due to lower activity by persons, who are in relationship, are older, reside in rural areas and/or have a lower income. Unlike existing studies our results of logit models show that, controlling for all other variables, females are equally likely (in transition economies) or more likely (in non-transition economies) to be regularly active in their leisure time than males. We believe that the reason for differences in results is omitted variable bias, since papers that find women to be less active do not control for person’s income.

Creation of the built environment and research in this field pose a particularly difficult challenge nowadays. The pace of social and technological change does not allow for evolutionary development of cities and the formation of their land use according to current conditions. Creating spatial solutions that are unmatched in their contexts is becoming not only possible, but very probable (see Alexander, 1964). The development of the built environment involves not only art, technology, history, economics and law, but also philosophy, culture, medicine, psychology, sociology and many other spheres in which human life is manifested. However, only a relatively small number of disciplines such as spatial planning, urban design, urban planning, etc. (ignoring at this point the differences in the meaning of the concepts) in their application layer are meant to create space and bear responsibility for it. Also society has certain requirements of practical nature towards them. This article attempts to outline the nature of research on space urbanised by people and to determine the four main fields of research aimed at the problems of man and the built environment. In the next part, particular attention is paid to issues related to the impact of the built environment on the life of its residents in order to highlight the particular role and complexity of this area of research. This study, acting as a kind of test of the research, cannot be considered representative. Nevertheless, the analysis prompts several reflections on the current and future role of the built environment in the development of our civilisation, as well as further challenges related to it.

This paper aims at presenting the results of research carried out during the “Sun and Adventure” project dedicated for children – cancer survivors. The research focused on sociotherapeutic and psychosocial benefits for the Project’s participants. The methods involved questionnaire technique: a slightly modified Polish adaptation of QOLCE (Health-Related Quality of Life in Childhood Epilepsy) and the Polish adaptation of Spielberger’s state-trait anxiety questionnaire in the version dedicated to children STAI – C. The results were complemented by interviews carried out with the participants during the camp organized within the Project framework. Participation in the Project influenced the quality of life of the cancer survivors, although to a lesser extent than it might have been expected. The obtained results are relatively minor due to the high initial quality of life level of the participants. Nevertheless, participation in this program may contribute to positive changes in the functioning of cancer survivors. In the view of future editions of the Project, it is necessary to implement more precise inclusion criteria to maximize the effects of potential positive changes. It appears that such criteria as good health condition and desire to participate in the Project are insufficient to optimally select the participants. Inviting children to participate in the “Sun and Adventure” Project (and similar initiatives aiming at improving quality of life) should be also based on evaluation of the family environment and the financial situation of the participant, as well as the psychological consequences of cancer treatment (for example, anxiety, depression, difficulties with group adaptation). Implications for cancer survivors are following: organized and structured camps involving physical activity and psychological assistance are profitable for young cancer survivors whose social development has been affected by their illness and treatment.

Elderly people are not only more susceptible to disease, but they are also at a higher risk of sustaining accidents such as falls, which definitely affects the quality of human life. Aging, in other words, carries with it an increased danger of illness and injuries, including those caused by falling. Research referred to in this article consisted in collecting and analyzing anonymized data of 411 geriatric patients admitted to a hospital in Berlin, Germany, over a period of six months, between January and June 2020, and attempted to look at how fall prophylaxis can reduce the overall healthcare costs generated by senior citizens. Of the 411 geriatric patients, 105, aged between 49 and 97 (69 females and 36 males), sustained injuries due to falling and made up 34.3% of all geriatric patients. Conclusions that the author arrived at can prove useful to determine the importance of the prevention of falls of older people in reducing the complications resulting from falls. The overall costs of senior citizens' health care were also taken into consideration. Therefore, solutions should be sought to reduce the number of falls of older people. Falls are an important public health problem causing suffering for elderly patients, worsening the comfort of further life and additionally generating relatively high costs for the economy.

Objectives The study assessed quality of life and depression in working people during COVID-19 pandemic, relative to their physical activity. Material and Methods The study involved 1194 people living in south-eastern Poland, and assessed life satisfaction (Life Satisfaction Questionnaire – 9 [LISAT-9]), quality of life (World Health Organization Quality of Life – BREF [WHOQoL-BREF]), depression (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]) and physical activity. Results The respondents on average scored 4.32 in LISAT-9; respectively 66.2, 68.3, 69.6 and 63.5 in physical, psychological, social and environment domains of WHOQoL-BREF and 9.2 in BDI. Regularly performed physical activity positively affected the scores in all the psychometric tests in women with higher and secondary education and in men with vocational education. Women presented lower life satisfaction, poorer quality of life and higher level of depression than men. The psychometric scores were also differentiated by type of employment and job. Depression was identified in 44% of all the respondents. Conclusions Individuals who are economically active during the pandemic report good quality of life and no or only mild signs of depression. Working people with higher education cope more effectively with adversities of the pandemic, compared to those with lower education.
