The Polish sociologist and philosopher Florian Znaniecki, well-known by his research together with W. I. Thomas on Polish immigrants in the United States, explicated the principles of his “analytic induction” in a later publication The Method of Sociology. This is a method in which research units are examined one by one and in which theoretical insights are adjusted to each observation. This process of continuous re-formulation of the research hypotheses completes when new observations do no longer offer new insights, i.e., when theoretical saturation takes place. In this paper a treatment of the original view of Znaniecki is offered. His starting-points-inductive approach, respect for the facts, dynamical fundamental attitude, special treatment of exceptions, attention for validity and intensional approach-are explained, as well as his formulation of analytic induction in four steps and the principle of structural dependence and the principle of causality. Starting from this original view, the advantages and disadvantages of analytic induction are balanced against each other and this method is examined with the aim of application. Critiques of the approach in the period around 1950, by Robinson, Lindesmith and Cressey and, later in time, by Peter Manning, are discussed and additional research examples from Belgium and the Netherlands serve as illustration of the arguments.

Opis:
The article discusses current methodological trends in social research on physical education (PE), physical activity (PA) and sport in research presented on AIESEP scientific meetings. Special attention was paid to the dissemination of qualitative research approach applied independently or parallel to the qualitative measurements. Such a mixed methodological compositions allow to obtain more comprehensive and in-depth view of many scientific issues of PE, PA and sport. The article presents up-to-date research examples and some practical recommendations for further investigations.

Przykłady zastosowania takich metod ukazano w prezentowanym artykule.
In the research within the pedagogy of labour, there is the need to broaden the choice of research methods. Both quantitative and qualitative methods may be in question. It can be assumed that such methods will prove useful as far as the issues of the pedagogy of labour are concerned. The pedagogy of labour, due to its specific scope and issues, is suited for using qualitative research methods to a large extent. The article presents examples of using this kind of methods.

Artykuł dotyczy analizy konwersacyjnej (AK) jako metody wywodzącej się z socjologii, a stosowanej i rozwijanej także w psychologii, językoznawstwie oraz logopedii. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie możliwości metody w opisie interakcji werbalnych różnego typu. W tekście zaprezentowano zastosowanie AK w badaniu zdolności dialogowych dzieci bilingwalnych. Badano, jakie wzorce przełączania kodu (CS) występują w mowie dzieci dwujęzycznych, jakie są ich cechy wzorców oraz jakie strategie konwersacyjne występują w wywiadach z dziećmi. Stwierdzono, że CS ściśle wiąże się z brakami leksykalnymi w języku polskim. Zauważono cechy negocjacji konwersacyjnej w momentach użycia języka angielskiego. Poza tym wobec braków w polskim repertuarze językowym odnotowano u mówców stosowanie napraw, a także nakładanie się wypowiedzi interlokutorów.
The article concerns conversation analysis (CA) as a method derived from sociology, and also used and developed in psychology, linguistics, and speech and language therapy. The article aims at presenting the potential of the method in describing various types of verbal interactions. The text presents the use of CA to explore the dialogic abilities of bilingual children. The authors study code switching (CS) patterns occurring in bilingual children’s speech, the features of these patterns, and conversational strategies that appear in interviews with children. It was found that CS is closely linked to lexical deficits in Polish. The features of conversational negotiation were noticed when using English. Moreover, due to deficiencies in the Polish linguistic repertoire, the speakers used repairs, and the statements of the interlocutors would often overlap.

Wskazują na istotne elementy dotyczące znajomości metodologii badań pedagogicznych, w tym zasad prowadzenia badań ilościowych i jakościowych. Odnoszą się także do samej sylwetki badacza, zwracają uwagę na elementy własnych uwarunkowań psychologicznych, mogących wspierać bądź utrudniać prawidłowe zastosowanie modelu triangulacyjnego. Autorki zarysowują szczegółowo strony za i przeciw zastosowaniu strategii triangulacji w badaniach pedagogicznych i pozostawiają badaczowi otwarte pole decyzyjne, jak też skłaniają do refleksji nad pogłębioną oceną zasobów własnych.
The subject of the authors considerations is to present the triangulation as a strategy that can be used in a pedagogical research. The starting point for discussion is the set of definition concerning triangulation, includes the possibilities and opportunities for using it in a pedagogical research. The authors touch upon key areas for the researcher’s decision of use triangulation strategy in conducted research. The elements of methodology of pedagogical research are indicated as important, including the rules of conducting quantitative and qualitative research. The authors refer also to general figure of the researcher, paying attention to psychological conditions that may support or hinder use of application model correctly. The authors describe sides for and against using the triangulation strategy in pedagogical research. They leave the researcher open-minded for decision making and with deeply reflection of owned resources.

Content presented in this article is focused on the reflection of the factors determining the choice of research strategy in the analysis of school environment. Some of the elements to be examined refer to the structural and functional model of a school, others to the interpretative model. As the assumptions about the nature of school reality are completely different within these models, depending on how the school is perceived, there are different ways of designing and conducting research. It is arguable whether derived from a structural and functional model of school (the school as an environment education, positivist paradigm) only quantitative analysis are justified, and after the adoption of the interactive model (the school as a system of socio-cultural, interpretative paradigm) only qualitative research should be conducted? The choice, at the first glance, quite obvious is a matter of more complex, because the strategy of research procedure also depends on some another factors: the order in which the study is carried out, the subject and the scope of the analysis, the experience of the researcher and to some extent, to the fact who are beneficients of the results. In the first part of this article author is trying to deal with these relationships, in the second part, there are presented a few examples of analysis when using qualitative methods or strategies. Most of them are realized within the model of so-called mixed research. They are only some examples presented and they should be understood as exemplifications, not in –depth exploration. Described problems might be explained and explored in the future using other methods and techniques, as well as combining them.

The starting point of this article is the relationship of art and science from the perspective of epistemological and ontological insights of philosophers of science and researchers of contemporary art. Further on, the author presents the specificity of the interaction of art and pedagogy, in which the complex subject of the latter opens the field to various sources, styles and languages of knowing and understanding of the world and the human being (including the language of the arts). Seeing art as an important exploration tool for the analysis of education in qualitative pedagogical research, the author summarizes the assumptions of visual ethnography – a research method that, as she explains, oscillates between art and science (with its methodological appeal to the image as the primary medium of the art). In the conclusion, she indicates cognitive and practical benefits which may result from using the concepts that derive from the arts as a source of knowledge about the educational reality.

Autor artykułu stawia tezę, że dynamicznie rozkrzewiające się badania jakościowe nie mogą uwolnić się od metodologicznej tradycji pozytywizmu, a projekty badawcze realizowane przez badaczy społecznych często wpadają w scjentystyczne pułapki. W rezultacie badania jakościowe nierzadko stają się rewersem badań ilościowych. Dzieje się tak, ponieważ badacze nie są w stanie uwolnić się od kulturowej matrycy modernizmu, której są „nosicielami” i której składowe, na ogół nieświadomie wciąż aplikują do badania społeczeństw ponowoczesnych.
The author of the article states that the dynamically springing up qualitative research cannot free itself from the methodological tradition of positivism and the research projects carried out by social researchers very often fall into scientistic traps. As a result, the qualitative research frequently becomes the reverse of quantitative research. It happens so, because the researchers are not able to free themselves from the cultural matrix of modernism, whose “carriers” they are and whose components, usually unconsciously, they apply to their research on post-modern societies.

Process-tracing is a method of within-case analysis, which can provide causal explanations of various social phenomena. Its focus on developing and testing causal theories attracts interest among qualitative researchers who do not want to limit their inquiries to exploratory or descriptive aims. At the same time, the case-centric variant of process-tracing, in which theories are used pragmatically as heuristic devices, provides a systematic but also creative way of researching singular events and processes. This paper attempts to show what process-tracing is and what it is not, what its variants are and how they should be used. It also probes the ontological and epistemological limits of the method, by showing how it can be used in idealist and interpretive research.

This article tackles the issue of indigenous methodology, which is a part of a wider reflection over emancipatory paradigm within qualitative inquiry, oriented at local, culturally diverse communities. The author presents the origins and typical features of indigenous methodologies, pointing to their specific exemplification within research designs originating from the social and cultural realm of New Zealand, Australia and Canada. In practical terms, this article can provide an inspiration for the culturally sensitive, idiographic research projects, enriching not only the workshop of a researcher, but also contributing to the widening of the scope of selecting methodology for sociologists, pedagogues, ethnographers and other representatives of the European academia.

A dilemma for qualitative research is to achieve adequate data saturation and to reduce the time required for data collection. The aim of the article is to provide an answer to the question: to what extent should an in-depth interview be moderated in order to ensure an adequate level of saturation and time required for the analysis of several topics? The research methods include a literature analysis and an analysis of the author's dissertation research reports. The article may help to improve the collection of high-quality data during in-depth interviews and to contribute to developing the methodological aspects of qualitative research.
Jednym z dylematów badań jakościowych jest uzyskanie odpowiedniego poziomu nasycenia danych i zmniejszenie czasochłonności związanej z procesem ich gromadzenia. Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie: w jakim stopniu należy moderować wywiad pogłębiony, mając na uwadze zachowanie odpowiedniego poziomu saturacji oraz czasochłonność związaną z analizą wielu wątków? Zastosowane metody badawcze obejmują: przegląd literatury oraz analizę raportów z badań jakościowych prowadzonych przez autora w ramach przygotowywania rozprawy doktorskiej. Artykuł może się przyczynić do usprawnienia procesu gromadzenia wysokiej jakości danych, a także mieć wkład w kształtowanie aspektów metodycznych badań jakościowych.

Teza. Podejście nowej socjologii dzieciństwa (James, Prout, 1997) zwróciło oczy badaczy na dzieci jako kompetentnych aktorów społecznych, których wiedza (Mayall, 2008) na temat otaczającej je rzeczywistości może służyć celom naukowym, tj. poszukiwaniu prawdy poprzez możliwie jak najpełniejszy opis świata. Takie podejście odnosi się także do Konwencji o Prawach Dziecka, a w szczególności do artykułu 12, który postuluje umożliwienie dziecku formułowania własnych poglądów i opinii oraz bycia wysłuchanym w sposób swobodny, w odniesieniu do spraw, które go dotyczą, z uwzględnieniem jego wieku i dojrzałości (Brzozowska-Brywczyńska, 2014). Badania dzieci mogą poszerzyć perspektywę badanej rzeczywistości, ale jednocześnie obarczone są licznymi trudnościami, które, jeśli proces badawczy zostanie dobrze zaplanowany, a badacz będzie pamiętał o etyce, można zniwelować. Omówione koncepcje. Artykuł ukazuje perspektywę nowej socjologii, która jest zorientowana na dziecko jako podmiot badania i wynikające z tego podejścia trudności. Podejmując decyzję o charakterze działań badawczych, na samym początku należy zwrócić uwagę na problem semantyczny, innymi słowy ustalić, czy zajmujemy się badaniem dzieciństwa, badaniem dzieci czy badaniem z udziałem dzieci. Odnosząc się do tego wyboru, należy przygotować proces badawczy, nie zapominając o etyce i odpowiednio dobranej metodologii. Wyniki i wnioski. Trzeba być przygotowanym na trudności, na które można się natknąć przeprowadzając badania z uczestnictwem dzieci, i postępować zgodnie z prawem i zasadami etycznymi oraz wskazówkami metodologicznymi, aby je zminimalizować. Problemy są częstym powodem rezygnowania z włączania dzieci do badań, dlatego opracowanie propozycji ich rozwiązań jest istotne i potrzebne. Wartość poznawcza. Triki badawcze pozwalające pokonać najczęstsze trudności badań zakładających uczestnictwo dzieci.
Thesis. The approach of the new sociology of childhood (James, Prout, 1997) has turned the eyes of researchers on children as competent social actors whose knowledge (Mayall, 2008) about the reality which surrounds them can serve scientific purposes, in other words, to look for the truth through the fullest possible description of the world. This approach also applies to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and particularly to Article 12, which calls for the child to be able to form its own views and opinions and be heard freely, considering its age and maturity (Brzozowska-Brywczyńska, 2014). Children's research may broaden the research perspective of the reality investigated, but at the same time it is burdened with numerous difficulties, which if the research process is well planned and the researcher follows an ethical approach, can be overcome. Concepts. The article presents the perspective of a new sociology oriented towards a child as a subject of research and the difficulties resulting from this approach. When deciding on the nature of research activities, at the very beginning, one must consider the semantic problem, in other words determine whether we are involved in the study of childhood, children's research or research with children. Depending on this choice, the research process should be carefully prepared, with the consideration of ethics and a properly selected methodology. Results. We need to be prepared for the difficulties we may encounter when conducting research with the participation of children. We should abide by the law and ethical principles and methodological guidelines to minimize these difficulties. Problems are a frequent reason for giving up the inclusion of children in research, which is why developing proposals for their solutions is important and necessary. Value. Examples of methods to overcome the most common difficulties of research involving children's participation.

The work discusses a methodological critique of research concepts, designed and introduced in social sciences, under the positivist and humane paradigms and in ‘mixed’ research. Attention is paid to consecutive stages of a research project (its key points are indicated) and also to needed reflection as well as seeking answers to numerous questions concerning the right structure of projects described in academic articles and monographs.
Praca poddaje pod dyskusję krytykę metodologiczną koncepcji badawczych projektowanych i realizowanych w naukach społecznych, w ramach paradygmatów pozytywistycznego, humanistycznego oraz w badaniach „mieszanych”. Zwrócono uwagę na kolejne etapy projektu badawczego (z jego kluczowymi punktami), a także na niezbędną refleksję i poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na liczne pytania dotyczące właściwej konstrukcji projektów opisywanych w artykułach czy też w monografiach naukowych.

Opis:
Covert participant observation is an example of ethically controversial quality method applied in social studies. This article presents the main dilemmas faced by researchers analysing difficult environments in order to gather valuable data in the most harmless for the subjects of their research way. The knowledge about the possible strategies is provided by three quoted examples of field research carried out in isolated environments.
Niejawna obserwacja uczestnicząca stanowi przykład etycznie dyskusyjnej metody jakościowej, stosowanej w naukach społecznych. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje główne dylematy, z którymi badacze analizujący trudne środowiska muszą się zmierzyć, aby zgromadzić wartościowe dane w nieszkodliwy dla obiektów ich badań sposób. Wiedzy na temat możliwych strategii, dostarczają trzy przytoczone przykłady badań terenowych, realizowanych w środowiskach izolowanych.
