Opis:
The deployment of appropriate technologies to enhance modern agricultural practices and improve crop yields is imperative for sustainability. This paper presents the development of a standalone automated irrigation system. The system design features good automation and control, which was achieved using an array of electronic timing system, soil feedback sensor and wireless communication system. Autonomous irrigation events are based on the states of the timing system, the soil feedback system and the wireless communication system. The control and automation of these systems was done using an AVR microcontroller, which was programmed to trigger intelligent and independent farm irrigation operation through a water pump attached to the system. The system also operates remotely via SMS command from mobile device and sends operational status feedback via SMS to preprogrammed mobile user(s). It also sends soil moisture condition to a remote user upon query. The system package was produced using additive manufacturing technique. The power supply system was implemented using solar power system in order to achieve a standalone, autonomous and reliable power supply necessary for an independent operation. The performance evaluation of the developed system show impressive response time, good reliability and excellent stability. Furthermore, the numerical experiment conducted using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) produced a mathematical model for the optimization of the irrigation process for optimum performance and cost effectiveness.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a metrological analysis of the additively manufactured (AM) copies of a complex geometrical object, namely the fossil skull of Madygenerpeton pustulatum. This fossil represents the unique remains of an extinct “reptiliomorph amphibian” of high importance for palaeontological science. For this research, the surface was scanned and twelve different copies were 3D-printed using various devices, materials, and AM techniques. The same digitized model was used as a reference to compare with the surfaces obtained by Mitutoyo Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) CRYSTA-Apex S 9166 for each copy. The fidelity of the copies was assessed through statistical analysis of the distances between compared surfaces. The methodology provided a good background for the choice of the most accurate copies and the elimination of the less accurate ones. The proposed approach can be applied to any object of complex geometry when reproduction accuracy is to be assessed.

Opis:
In the recent years, additive manufacturing became an interesting topic in many fields due to the ease of manufacturing complex objects. However, it is impossible to determine the mechanical properties of any additive manufacturing parts without testing them. In this work, the mechanical properties with focus on ultimate tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of 3D printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) specimens were investigated. The tensile tests were carried using Zwick Z005 loading machine with a capacity of 5KN according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D638 standard test methods for tensile properties of plastics. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of printing direction on the mechanical properties of the printed specimens. Thus, for each printing direction ( and ), five specimens were printed. Tensile testing of the 3D printed ABS specimens showed that the printing direction made the strongest specimen at an ultimate tensile strength of 22 MPa while at printing direction it showed 12 MPa. No influence on the modulus of elasticity was noticed. The experimental results are presented in the manuscript.

Opis:
This article presents the vibration analysis of a turbocharger, whose compression wheel was manufactured using a high-precision additive manufacturing technology. Currently, there are advance studies around the world for the development of parts of innovative fluid-flow machines using additive manufacturing techniques. The experimental research was carried out under conditions of reduced flow temperatures. The tests and the analysis were performed on a wheel manufactured using a 3D printing technology and on a conventionally used aluminium wheel. Apart from an FFT analysis of the vibration signal during machine operation, a machine run-up test was conducted (up to a speed of 105,000 rpm). The results showed the positive impact of the use of a plastic wheel on the dynamics of the system at a certain speed range, which might contribute to the development of a new method to optimise the geometry of flow systems in small high-speed turbomachines. A modified automotive turbocharger was subjected to experiments on a test stand.

The changes caused by Industry 4.0 determine the decisions taken by manufacturing companies. Their activities are aimed at adapting processes and products to dynamic market requirements. Additive manufacturing technologies (AM) are the answer to the needs of enterprises. The implementation of AM technology brings many benefits, although for most 3D printing techniques it is also relatively expensive. Therefore, the implementation process should be preceded by an appropriate analysis, in order, finally, to assess the solution. This article presents the concept of using the Bayesian network when planning the implementation of AM technology. The use of the presented model allows the level of the success of the implementation of selected AM technology, to be estimated under given environmental conditions.

The steps in the current additive manufacturing processing sequence are: conceptualization and CAD, conversion to STL, transfer and manipulation of STL file on an AM machine, machine setup, prototyping (additive manufacturing) of part, removal from machine and clean up, post-processing of the part. Modifications can be then made to satisfy the criteria of shape, stress and strain state and temperature distribution during processing. An example of this procedure is presented for a cup holder printed in 2 polymers. Modification to this procedure for metal printing is now presented: initially printing a polymer prototype. The methodology of planning the prototyping process and of closed die forging technology by applying 3D printing are described. For a con rod: preform, die and the forging models, based on CAD documentation and STL file, were initially 3D printed from a polymer in processing steps. Optimization was carried out prior to the expensive metal printing. It is shown that to optimize shape of the manufactured part, simulation is a key step of planning prototyping and forging technology.

This article presents the results of a research on the behavior of NiCrAlY coating obtained by the LENS method on austenitic stainless steel type 316L under long-term annealing conditions at 1000°C for 25, 100 and 250 hours. The morphology of the NiCrAlY layer as a function of annealing time and temperature was characterized. The chemical composition and distribution of alloying elements were evaluated using scanning microscopy and micro-area chemical composition analysis. It was revealed that NiCrAlY coatings deposited by LENS method are characterized by good metallurgical quality. The long-term annealing of the NiCrAlY coating led to microstructural changes in the form of the disappearance of the original dendritic structure and the formation of a solid solution of nickel with chromium and a small amount of aluminum, as well as chromium α-Cr precipitates and Ni-Y-type phases. The effect of increasing iron concentration in the coating due to diffusion-to-core processes was also found.

Opis:
Selective laser melting is one of the additive manufacturing technologies that is used to produce complex-shaped components for applications in the automotive industry. The purpose of the changes in the design, technology, and material tests was to make a steering gear housing using the SLM method. The steering gear housing was produced by the pressure casting method using an AlSi9Cu3(Fe) alloy. The construction of this housing is adapted to the specifics of left-hand traffic. The change in technology was related to the change of the position of the steering system from right-hand to left-hand and the demand for a limited number of gear housings. It was necessary to make a virtual model of the housing on the basis of the part that was removed from the vehicle. In SLM technology, the AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy was used as a raw material in the form of CL 32Al gas-atomized powder. After the SLM process was completed, the housings were subjected to heat treatment. The AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by the SLM method after heat treatment is characterized by good plasticity and an average value of tensile strength. The last stage was to check the geometry of the SLM housing with a 3D scanner. As a result, a map of the dimensional deviations from the nominal values was obtained. This data was used to modify the CAD model before the next fabrication process. The use of 3D printing technology allowed for the quick production of elements. The time to develop the technology and the production of the first two gear housings based on a 3D model was seven days.

Opis:
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a modern, innovative manufacturing method that enables the production of fully dense products with high mechanical properties and complex shapes that are often impossible to obtain by traditional methods. The 17-4PH grade steel is often applied where high mechanical performance is required. 17-4PH, or AISI 630, is intended for precipitation hardening, an operation that combines solution and ageing treatments and is used to significantly change the microstructure of the steel and enhance its mechanical properties. This study investigates the effect of precipitation hardening on the properties of 17-4PH steel. To examine microstructure and morphology, metallographic tests were performed together with phase composition and chemical composition analyses. Mechanical parameters were determined via Vickers hardness testing and the Oliver-Pharr method. Samples were fabricated using direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), which is one of the powder bed fusion methods. The use of a constant solution treatment temperature of 1040_C and different ageing temperatures made it possible to evaluate the effects of ageing temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructure of 17-4PH. The presence of face-centered cubic FCC g-austenite and body-centerd cubic BCC a-martensite structures were detected. The tests revealed that – similarly to the wrought material – the highest hardness of 382_10:3 HV0:2 was obtained after ageing at 450_C. The nanoindentation test showed the same H/E ratio for the sample after fabrication and after solution treatment at 0.016769, but this value increased after ageing to 127–157.5%. The sample aged at 450_C was characterized by the highest H/E ratio of 0.026367, which indicates the highest wear resistance of this material under employed treatment conditions. In general, the sample treated at 450_C showed the best performance out of all tested samples, proving to have the smallest grain size as well as high Vickers and nanoindentation hardness. On the other hand, the use of solution treatment led to reduced hardness and improved workability of the AM material.

This study investigated the relationship between the parameters of the DLP manufacturing process and the structure of photopolymerizable acrylic resins. Four different process parameters were established to produce different thin-walled acrylic sample series: exposure time, layer thickness, area offset, and number of transition layers. The structure and the surface of the obtained samples were examined with the use of the FTIR–ATR method and an optical microscope, respectively. It was proved that extension of the exposure time increases the density of crosslinking and sample thickness. A decreasing crosslinking density due to rising layer thickness is observed. The area offset affects only the dimensions of the sample, predictably reducing the dimensions of the sample as the compensation increases. The absence of transition layers proved unfavorable in many respects, both structurally and geometrically.

Opis:
The fused deposition modeling process of digital printing uses a layer-by-layer approach to form a three-dimensional structure. Digital printing takes more time to fabricate a 3D model, and the speed varies depending on the type of 3D printer, material, geometric complexity, and process parameters. A shorter path for the extruder can speed up the printing process. However, the time taken for the extruder during printing (deposition) cannot be reduced, but the time taken for the extruder travel (idle move) can be reduced. In this study, the idle travel of the nozzle is optimized using a bioinspired technique called "ant colony optimization" (ACO) by reducing the travel transitions. The ACO algorithm determines the shortest path of the nozzle to reduce travel and generates the tool paths as G-codes. The proposed method’s G-code is implemented and compared with the G-code generated by the commercial slicer, Cura, in terms of build time. Experiments corroborate this finding: the G-code generated by the ACO algorithm accelerates the FDM process by reducing the travel movements of the nozzle, hence reducing the part build time (printing time) and increasing the strength of the printed object.

Opis:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes such as three- dimensional (3D) printing are one of most important technologies of our century. Additive manufacturing is a manufacturing process in which 3D solid objects are created. It enables the creation of physical 3D models of objects using a series of an additive or layered development framework, where layers are laid down in succession to create a complete 3D object. Additive manufacturing is also known as 3D printing. The strongest reasons for the use of rapid prototypes in manufacturing are the production of parts with a small quantity or a complex shape, the obtaining of lighter parts, the prevention of waste of raw materials, a wider availability of testing and design and further personalization. Continuous liquid interface production (CLIP) is an alternative approach to AM by exploiting the basic principle of oxygen-impaired photopolymerization to create a continuous fluid interface of uncured resin between the growing section and the exposure window.
