Opis:: The article presents the problem of lack of compliance with population registration requirements, in relation to the factual place of residence. This problem persists in Poland due to the reliance of official statistics on the data on current registrations, and also due to adoption of the legal, rather than factual definition of residence. To estimate the extent of this phenomenon for Mazovia voivodship, the data of the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) are used, which enable a comparison of the addresses of permanent residence with the address for correspondence of the insured persons. Depending on the age group, the identified differences were quite high, especially for the most mobile ages (e.g. over 9% for people aged 27 years). Spatial concentration was also shown, especially with respect to underestimation of the true population of Warsaw and its suburban areas, and overestimation for peripheral regions. In many communes the problem of non-compliance with registration requirements concerns over 10% of the registered population. This limits the scope of demographic analyses, especially in the context of their practical applications and population projections

Opis:: Estimating the size and places of residence of the population of Ukraine has been this country’s problem for the past decade, and is related to the lack of census data for the 2010 round, large-scale processes of external and internal labour migration, and Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine that started in 2014. This already disadvantageous situation has been significantly exacerbated by Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine which began on 24th February 2022. Conducting statistical surveys, especially surveys regarding the population, turned out to impossible under war circumstances. Therefore, the task of developing effective approaches to estimating the population size using data from existing sources, in particular the data of mobile operators regarding the number, location and mobility of subscribers, has become even more pressing. The article highlights the results of a study on the use of data from mobile operators, data from administrative registers, and the results of a special population sample survey on the use of mobile communication for the purpose of estimating the population. It also provides the results of experimental calculations of the population size in Ukraine as a whole and in particular regions. The study moreover showed that the size of Ukraine’s population in November 2019, unlike the official estimate of 41,940.7 thousand people, was probably about 37,289.4 thousand people. The developed approaches can be used to estimate the number and location of the population of Ukraine during the intercensal period or significant population movements due to environmental disasters or military conflicts.

Opis:: Strefa podmiejska Wrocławia charakteryzuje się dynamicznymi zmianami liczby mieszkańców oraz wzmożonym ruchem budowlanym. Tempo dokonujących się przemian nie do końca znajduje jednak odzwierciedlenie w oficjalnych statystykach ludnościowych, opierających się na danych meldunkowych, prezentujących znacznie niższą liczbę ludności, niż w rzeczywistości zamieszkuje gminy znajdujące się w najbliższym sąsiedztwie Wrocławia. Celem artykułu jest oszacowanie rzeczywistej liczby ludności zamieszkującej strefę podmiejską Wrocławia dla danych z lat 2012/2013 i 2020 oraz ukazanie stopnia zróżnicowania zachodzących przemian w poszczególnych miejscowościach. Szacowania wielkości populacji dokonano na podstawie autorskiej metody, polegającej na agregacji i porównaniu danych statystycznych o zameldowaniach z rejestru Powszechnego Elektronicznego Systemu Ewidencji Ludności (PESEL) oraz wektorowych danych przestrzennych z Bazy Danych Obiektów Topograficznych (BDOT10k). Według szacunku w analizowanym okresie (lata 2012/2013 i 2020) w strefie podmiejskiej Wrocławia odnotowano ponad dwukrotnie większy wzrost liczby ludności, niż wskazują na to oficjalne dane statystyczne. Największym poziomem niedoszacowania rzeczywistej liczby mieszkańców charakteryzowały się miejscowości położone w pobliżu głównych szlaków komunikacyjnych oraz znajdujące się w najbliższym sąsiedztwie miasta, w których najwcześniej obserwowano rozwój procesu suburbanizacji.
The suburban zone of Wroclaw is characterised by dynamic population changes and increased construction traffic. However, the pace of the changes taking place is not fully reflected in official population statistics, based on registration data, presenting a much lower population than actually resides in the suburban municipalities. The purpose of the article is to estimate the actual population of the Wroclaw suburban zone for data from 2012/13 and 2020, and to show the degree of the differentiation of the population transition taking place in individual reference units. The estimation of the population size was made on the basis of the author’s method, based on the aggregation and comparison of statistical data on registrations from the register of the General Electronic System of Population Registration (PESEL) and vector spatial data from the Database of Topographic Objects (BDOT10k). From 2012/13 to 2020, the population of suburban zone of Wrocław almost doubled compared to official statistics data. The highest level of the underestimation of the actual population was observed in villages located near main communication routes and in the closet vicinity to Wrocław city. Those are places where the suburbanistion processes were observed the earliest.
