Opis:
The authors deals with the health of the EU population. The health of the Slovak population has improved since 2000, but it still lags behind the EU average. Slovaks live longer, but differences in life expectancy by gender and socio-economic groups persist. In the Slovak health care system, care is provided to all residents, although access to it is limited in some regions and quality and efficiency can improve in many areas. Most Slovaks report good health, but there are differences according to income groups. About two thirds of the Slovak population report good health, a ratio similar to the EU average, but higher than in most neighboring countries. However, according to their own health assessment, there are differences in socio-economic status. The health of the Slovak population has improved since 2000, but it still lags behind the EU average. Slovaks live longer, but differences in life expectancy by gender and socio-economic groups persist. Opis:
Intestinal parasitic diseases in Gaza Strip are a significant health problem. The main aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of parasitic infection among patients in the five governorates of the Gaza Strip. A crosssectional parasitological survey was conducted on 600 patients. Stool specimens were examined microscopically for the presence of parasite eggs or larvae/cysts per wet amount by the saline iodine and formol-ether concentration method. Of 600 subjects examined, 245 (40.8%) were infected with one or more intestinal parasites. Entamoeba histolytica/dispar and Giardia lamblia were the most prevalent parasites amongst the population (28.8%), (9.5%). Female patients demonstrated a higher prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (42.7%) than males (39.0%). However, this difference was not significant (p>0.05). According to occupation, the rate of infection was highest among farmers (56.0%), followed by employers (44.2%) with laborers showing the lowest rate (30.17%). These differences in occupational prevalence were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The present study demonstrates that intestinal protozoan infections are still a public health problem in the Gaza strip, with Entamoeba and Giardia infections being most common. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective prevention and control strategies, including health education and environmental sanitation improvement.

Opis:
The use of polluted water bodies for recreation poses a risk of infectious diseases. This fact necessitates taking into account bacteriological indicators to determine the danger of recreational water use. The aim of the article was to develop a new method for assessing the potential risk to population health during recreational water use. A new method for assessing the potential risk to population health during recreational water use has been proposed, which combines the identification of potential risk according to chemical and bacteriological indicators. A new classification of water hazard levels according to the values of risk to population health has been developed. The value of the potential risk to the population health during the recreational use of 6 beaches in the urbanized territories of the city of Kharkiv and its suburbs (Ukraine) was obtained. It was established that bacteriological contamination has the probability of a very large impact on public health (hazard class 5). To compare the methods of assessing the risk to population health during recreational water use, the hazard index (NI) was determined according to the chemical indicators of the quality of water bodies in the city of Kharkiv. The use of the assessment of the potential risk to population health for the environmental regulation of the discharge of pollutants into a water body with wastewater is justified.

Opis:
In search for new markers of insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM) susceptibility we studied the CATT tetranucleotide repeat in intron 1 of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene on chromosome lip, the CA repeat at T-cell receptor a chain (TCRA) locus on chromosome 14q and two CA repeats at D10S211 and D10S213 loci in the chromosome 10 region containing glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD2) gene. Alleles at these microsatellite loci were identified in a population of diabetic children and unrelated healthy controls originating from Wielkopolska, a midwestern region of Poland. We found significant association of certain alleles at TH, TCRA and D10S211 loci with diabetes in the population under study. On the contrary, none of the alleles at D10S213 locus was associated with the disease. Our findings indicate that typing of microsatellite markers may represent useful additional tool for identifying individuals at high risk of developing IDDM. Regarding loci on chromosome 10 our data and data published by other authors may suggest the extistence of two separate regions of association with IDDM susceptibility on this chromosome.
