Introduction
Opis:
The production of plywood from impregnated veneers allows a wood-based product protected in the entire cross-section to be obtained. The conducted research was focused on the properties of veneers impregnated with a mixture of potassium carbonate and urea, such as pH, wettability, colour change and surface roughness. In addition, the properties of plywood produced with melamineureaformaldehyde resin, such as the shear strength and formaldehyde emission, were the subject of research as well. It was found that the impregnated veneers were characterized by an increased pH, increased wettability, a completely different colour and unchanged surface roughness. Moreover, the impregnation of the veneers caused a decrease in the bonding quality of the plywood and a reduction in formaldehyde emissions from the finished product. It can be concluded that the melamineurea-formaldehyde adhesive is more suitable for the production of fire-resistant plywood than the urea-formaldehyde adhesive.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study concerning elastic properties of beech veneers assembled in plywood panels. There has been derived a complete set of elastic constants for veneers considered as orthotropic bodies. Young’s moduli in the grain direction and in the direction perpendicular to the grain were determined by bending plywood strips with their longitudinal axis parallel and perpendicular to the grain of the face plies. The other elastic moduli of the veneers were calculated through the Young’s modulus in the grain direction, with using the regression functions derived for hardwoods by Bodig and Goodman (1973). The effect of glue lines in plywood on the veneer elastic properties was evaluated.

Opis:
The plywood is considered as a layered cross-ply unidirectional fibre reinforced composite. The experimental Compact Tension (CT) tests carried out in different directions of plywood fibre orientation show that the characteristics of damages are fibre bundle rupture, matrix cracking along the fibres, and delamination at the ply interlayers of glue. The plywood CT specimens are modelled by continuum shell and cohesive finite elements with damage evolution in material models. The Finite Element (FE) model simulates the experimental behaviour of plywood samples very well and allows deep investigation of the different types of damage development and interaction. The FE model of plywood is useful for its lay-up optimization and for development of very efficient in large-scale simulations computational models of plywood.

Opis:
Plywood is a wood-based panel material laminated of veneers where the grain direction is perpendicular in adjacent layers. The use of plywood can be extended if there is a possibility to use special lay-up schemes designed to improve mechanical properties which depend on the grain direction in the outer plies. This report contains results of research whose purpose was to determinate bending strength and modulus of elasticity of birch plywood types with special veneer lay-up schemes and of different width, bending flatwise and edgewise. Two special plywood types, 28 mm thick Spec1 and 30 mm thick Spec3, with different veneer lay-up schemes were selected for bending properties determination tests according to standard EN 789. Specimens were tested when the face veneer direction was parallel and then perpendicular to the specimens’ longer axis. Moisture content and density were determined as well. This report contains the comparison of bending strength properties of special plywood specimen with different width and load direction. It was found that bending strength was significantly higher for narrower special plywood specimens, and bending strength of special plywood loaded edgewise was 4 % lower for Spec1 and 9.5 % lower for Spec3 than for flatwise loaded specimen of the same cross-sectional dimensions.

Opis:
The paper analyses the amount of cut, the assortment and species structure of the current domestic market for timber of the highest quality classes (wood veneer, plywood, telecommunication poles) in Poland in years 2005−2009. Oak and beech are the main source of material for the production of veneer in Poland. Sales of oak veneer in 2005−2009 amounted to 17,502.9 m3 (35.8% of the total sales of assortment WA1). Sales of beech veneer in 2005−2009 amounted to 11,233.5 m3 (23.0% of total sales). Among the plywood assortments harvested in Poland in 2005−2009, birch was harvested and sold in the largest quantities – 503,870.0 m3 (39.1% of total harvest) and 590,822.4 m3 (43.8% of total sales). Of all the regional directorates of the State Forests, the Krosno RDSF showed in 2005−2009 the largest harvest of WA1 assortments – 9734.0 m3 (21.4% of the total harvest), and sale – 9611.0 m3 (19.7% of total sales). Because of the large beech and sycamore timber resources, forests in the Krosno RDSF are a main current and potential source of veneer assortments. Because of the large amounts of harvested and sold oak, beech, pine, birch and alder veneer the Białystok, Olsztyn, Szczecinek and Szczecin RDSFs play the dominant role on the Polish timber market. The leading role in terms of plywood sales in the period under review was taken by RDSFs Olsztyn – 24.9%, Białystok – 26.2%, Szczecinek – 13.1% and Szczecin – 11.6%. These RDSFs taken together supplied to the market 75.8% of plywood, being the main material base for the plywood industry. The dominant role of these RDSFs derives from the fact that forests under their administration are rich in birch, alder and pine. Spruce as a plywood material is insufficiently used by the plywood industry (harvest – 33,269.9 m3, sale – 579.5 m3).

Opis:
The analysis of the sales methods and prices of the highest quality timber (wood veneer, plywood and telecommunication poles) was based on the data obtained from the General Directorate of the State Forests covering the period 2005−2009. They were supplemented by the data on sales, prices and revenues from sales, auctions and submissions obtained from the Regional Directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) in: Szczecin, Poznań, Białystok, Krosno and Lublin. The results of the submission sales organized by the Krosno RDSF and auctions organized by the Poznań RDSF in 2005−2009 were also analysed. The analyses confirm that sales of the highest quality wood through auctions and submissions give the best economic results while ensuring the optimal use of the existing resource base. Both sales methods foster rational use of valuable wood and therefore should be adopted in other RDSFs. In the years 2005−2009, the difference (increase) between wood valuation and the derived income from the auction sales organized in the Poznań RDSF amounted to 39.6%. The difference (increase) between wood valuation and the derived income from the submission sales organized in the Krosno RDSF in the same period amounted to 80.1%. The maximum prices of wood veneer obtained through auctions and submissions are higher than the prices obtained via Internet sales. Among the WA1 assortments sold in Poland in the years 2005−2009, sycamore, maple, and cherry veneer reached the highest average price per cubic meter. Among the wood species from which veneer is produced, oak veneer is the most sold species. Among the WB1 assortments sold in Poland in the years 2005−2009, pine and spruce plywood reached the highest average price per cubic meter. The prices of birch, beech and alder plywood were lower and varied by a maximum of 6.7%. Among the species from which plywood is produced, birch plywood sells bests.
