Opis:: Several studies revealed a close functional relations between the immune, nervous and endocrine systems which communicate between each other using the common mediators and their receptors. The immune cells not only receive signals from the endocrine system but also produce numerous hormones, usually after stimulation with antigens including parasites antigens. On the other hand, parasites are able to exploit hormonal microenvironment within the host to establish an infection and avoid the eradication by evolving receptors for host hormones. Some parasites produce also steroid hormones and alter host hormones levels. Increasing numbers of prophylaxis and therapy procedures involve hormones as main or supplementary components (e.g., estrogens, dexamethasone or insulin). The aim of this paper is to present new literature data concerning the immunomodulatory effect of selected hormones in infections caused by two parasitic apicomplexans: Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium spp. In addition to sex- and pregnancy- associated hormones which determine dimorphic immune responses in females versus males, the action of other hormones of great physiological importance will also be discussed.

Opis:: The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, described by Nicolle and Manceaux in 1908, is a ubiquitous and cosmopolitan parasite that infects a wide range of mammal and bird species. Although the parasite possesses a meiotic lifecycle phase it represents very unusual population structure comprising three archetypal clonal lines: I, II and III, which together account for over 95% of strains isolated in Europe and North America. The isolates from South America are more genetically diverse. Molecular phylogeny studies and phenotype analyses showed recently 11 successful parasite lineages (haplogroups) of different global distribution. Individual T. gondii strains vary strongly in their virulence which is very well defined in mice: there are extremely virulent strains (of RH type) with LD100=1 and low virulent strains (LD50≥1000), without any intermediate virulence strains. The article presents some recent data on the population structure and virulence of the parasite, mapping of virulence loci and new identified rhoptry antigens (ROP18 and ROP16) as major virulence components.

Opis:: The application of biochemical and molecular techniques in parasitological studies has provided increasing evidences of genetic polymorphism among parasite populations. This review presents possible origins of genetic variation within populations of various protozoan species. Since the mode of reproduction has an important influence on genetic polymorphism within parasite populations these considerations refer mainly to some protozoan parasites which have various life cycles, e.g. Giardia, Trypanosoma, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma. Also other factors associated with parasites (such as: transmission and passage history in laboratory conditions; occurrence in different hosts or geographic regions; selective pressure of drugs; competitive interactions between populations) that affect parasite genetic diversity are discussed. However, the number of examined isolates of parasites and genetic markers, assortment of methods, probes, primers and reagents used is also of significance. The significance of genetic variability in parasite populations is still the subject of much interest and controversy. A simple interpretation of such variation is impossible because of the complexity of host-parasite interactions. The knowledge of parasite diversity at the nucleic acids level has continually increased, but a corect interpretation of this phenomenon requires at least the same knowledge of genetic variability in host populations. Nevertheless, genetic variability in protozoan parasites has many important implications, e.g. for taxonomy, epidemiology, control and evolution. Genetic differences within parasite populations might also be associated with phenotypic variability, e.g. virulence, antigenicity, infectivity, drug sensitivity, hostpreference etc.
