The aim of this work was to determine selected physical properties of wheat grain which are of significance in transport, separation and storage processes as well as to assess the correlations between them and the technological properties of wheat. The grain of two wheat varieties (Eta and Banti) which are popular in Poland was used as research material. The tested properties included: vitreousness, test weight, thousand kernel weight, true density, geometric parameters (thickness, width, length), static friction coefficient of wheat kernels against steel and glass, protein and gluten content and the Zeleny sedimentation value. The grain of the investigated wheat varieties differed in most physical and technological properties. The average length, width and thickness kernels were 6.31 mm, 3.31 mm and 3.03 mm for vr. Banti and 6.05 mm, 3.33 mm, 2.97 mm for vr. Eta. The test weight ranged from 75.68 (Banti) to 78.29 kg • hl-1 (Eta), the thousand kernel weight from 36.3 (Eta) to 39.2 g (Banti) and vitreousness was from 13 (Banti) to 81% (Eta). A correlation between the physical and technological properties of wheat was found. The vitreousness of the wheat grain was positively correlated with protein content (the correlation indices were 0.58 for Banti variety and 0.67 for Eta) and the volume was positively correlated with the true density of grain (r = -0.69 Eta, r = -0.64 Banti). The static coefficient of the friction of wheat grains of two structural materials (metal or glass) is insufficient to predict its technological properties.

The fiber is extracted from the husk of the coconut seeds which are collected in Sri Lanka. Anyhow the above-mentioned characterization can hardly be seen when it comes to the Sri Lankan context. Since the evaluation of their physical, mechanical, and chemical properties are significant before commencing the material development process and applications for this fiber. Several testing were carried out to evaluate the above-mentioned properties. There, the functional groups of coir fiber were obtained by Fourier Transform Infrared analysis and Crystallinity Index and Crystallite size were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface morphology and cross-sectional features were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy. The thermo-gravimetric method was adopted to study the thermal stability of coir fiber. The density and diameter of coir fiber were measured utilizing pychometric method and optical microscope respectively. Tensile strength was measured using an electronic tensometer and then find out the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation at breaking point. The average density of brown coir fibers was 1.018 g/cm3 and average diameters were 0.30 mm. The Crystallinity Index and the crystal-line size were 37.28% and 0.4331 nm respectively. Ultimate tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and Elongation of the coir fiber were ranging from 94–159 MPa, 1.2–1.8 GPa, and 21–67%, respectively.

Influence of starch content on selected properties of hardboard. The aim of the research was to examine the possibility of producing wet-formed fiberboard using a different content of potato starch. The scope of works included the production of plates in laboratory conditions with 0, 1, 5, 10 and 20% mass content of potato starch and subjecting them to selected physical and mechanical tests. Thanks to the research, it was possible to produce a hard fiberboard hardboard using a mass fraction of starch. The results of the tests confirmed that as the starch content in the panel increases, the value of mechanical properties increases also.
Wpływ udziału skrobi na wybrane właściwości płyt pilśniowych mokroformowanych. Celem badań było określenie możliwości produkcji płyt pilśniowych twardych (mokroformowanych) z wykorzystaniem różnego udziału skrobi ziemniaczanej, jako środka wzmacniającego. Zakres prac obejmował wytworzenie płyt w warunkach laboratoryjnych przy: 0, 1, 5, 10, 20% udziale masowym skrobi ziemniaczanej oraz poddanie ich wybranym próbom fizycznym i mechanicznym. Potwierdzono możliwość wytwarzania płyt pilśniowych twardych z wykorzystaniem skrobi.

Wood plastic composites as a substitution for HDF. As part of the research, industrial HDF boards were used and WPC composites were produced, differentiated in terms of matrix (PLA and HDPE) and filler content (40%, 50% and 60%). The density and density profile was measured to compare HDF and WPC structure. In addition, the manufactured boards were tested for strength (MOR, MOE), screw holding, thickness swelling and water absorption after immersion in water for 2 and 24 hours. WPC were characterized by a higher density than HDF boards and a uniform density profile. In addition, WPC composites were characterized by lower MOR and MOE values than HDF boards. Compared to HDF boards, WPC composites were characterized by higher values of screw holding and better resistance to moisture.
Kompozyty WPC jako substytut płyt HDF. W ramach badań wykorzystano przemysłowe płyty HDF oraz wytworzono kompozyty WPC zróżnicowane pod kątem matrycy (PLA i HDPE) oraz udziału napełniacza (40%, 50% i 60%). Oznaczono gęstość i profil gęstości w celu porównania struktury HDF i WPC. Ponadto wytworzone płyty zostały przetestowane pod kątem wytrzymałości (MOR, MOE), utrzymania wkrętów, spęcznienia na grubość oraz nasiąkliwości po moczeniu w wodzie przez 2 i 24 godziny. WPC charakteryzowały się wyższa gęstością niż płyty HDF oraz jednorodnym profilem gęstości. Ponadto kompozyty WPC charakteryzowały się niższymi wartościami MOR i MOE niż płyty HDF. W porównaniu do płyt HDF kompozyty WPC charakteryzowały się wyższymi wartościami zdolności utrzymania wkrętów oraz lepszą odpornością na działanie wilgoci.

W pracy przedstawiono informacje dotyczące wymagań jakościowych i metod badań estrów metylowych kwasów tłuszczowych oleju rzepakowego jako paliwa do silników o zapłonie samoczynnym. Podkreślono zasadnicze różnice we właściwościach fizykochemicznych i użytkowych FAME w stosunku do oleju napędowego. Zamieszczono wyniki badań laboratoryjnych procesów starzeniowych FAME w określonych warunkach i czasu przechowywania oraz właściwości użytkowe w tym podatność na rozkład mikrobiologiczny i właściwości niskotemperaturowe.
The paper presents information concerning qualitative requirements and test methods for fatty acid methyl esters of rape-seed oil being the fuel for self-ignition engines. The authors emphasized essential differences in physical, chemical and functional properties of the FAME compared to diesel oil. The work contains the results of laboratory tests concerning the FAME ageing processes in certain conditions and storage time, and functional properties including susceptibility to microbiological decomposition and low temperature properties.

The aim of the study was to determine the possibility of using small seeds of rape (diameter <1.6 mm,) perceived as a raw material of inferior nutritional quality, for the biofuels production. Research material was samples of industrial mass of rapeseeds originating from three Polish regions. The seed mass was cleaned in a sieve separator, removing mineral matter (stones), cereal grains, stems and dusts. Then, the sample was sifted through a set of sieves and two fractions were received: seeds with diameter >1.6 mm – sample F1 and with diameter < 1.6 mm – sample F2. Each fraction was characterized by its share in bulk mass, moisture content, 1000 seeds weight, yield of pressing, fat content and phosphorus content. Cold-pressed oils were determined in terms of total and unhydrated phosphorus content, acid value and fatty acids content. Fractionation by weight rapeseeds with using an industrial sieve separation may provide a simple method for improving the technological value of the raw material used for food purposes, and thus obtain fine seed that could be intended exclusively for the production of technical oil. Despite the stated inferior quality of small seeds, it was found that the increased values of some discriminants would not have impact on the technology of biofuel production and cost of production.

The investigations on the effects of biochar application in improving the physio-chemical properties of soil have been carried out in many studies; however, there are very few studies on the combined use of both biochar and clay-rich soil for poor nutrient soil reclamation. Therefore, this study demonstrates improved water retention and nutrient retention of sandy soil by using biochar and biochar combined with clay-rich soil. The experiments were conducted on a small scale (greenhouse) with nine different application rates of biochar and clay-rich soil were mixed and then cultivated peanut, along with the drip irrigation technique using field moisture limit (about 70-80%) was applied under the condition of ensuring a sufficient supply of NPK for plant’s growth. The results showed that at the rates from 10.0-15.0% (w/w) clay-rich soil mixed with from 0.5-1.5% (w/w) of biochar applied to the tested sandy soil resulted in the positive effects on soil water holding, bulk density, permeability, pH, CEC, OM, total N, total P and peanut yield. The physical and chemical characteristics of the tested sandy soil have been improved by time and the application rate of 10.0% clay-rich soil and 0.5% biochar had the highest efficiency of pod fresh weight and pod dry weight during three studied seasons.

The aim of this paper was the examination of the physical-mechanical properties of Sorel cement-based material. In the experimental part the effect of polypropylene fibers (PP) and micro-silica on properties of composite materials were studied. The results show that addition of these modifiers increases compressive strength, waterproofing and resistance against corrosion. Increase of compressive strength was observed from both addition of PP and micro-silica. PP resulted in an increase in compressive strength of 0,72 MPa, whereas addition of micro-silica caused an increase of 17,5 % compared to pure Sorel’s cement. Improvement of water-tightness was observed in both additions of PP and micro-silica. Weight loss of samples with PP addition to the concrete after a 7-day bath in an aggressive solution of 5% HCl was less than about 20%.

Przeprowadzono analizę wymagań normatywnych dla oleju rzepakowego i jego mieszanin w oparciu o opracowanie Ministerstwa Rolnictwa Bawarii - Niemcy. Zwrócono uwagę, że część składników nie została w pełni określona i mogą ulegać ciągłej zmianie zarówno w zakresie wartości liczbowej jak i metodyki badań. Badania laboratoryjne własne dotyczą oceny jakości wybranych właściwości fizykochemicznych oleju rzepakowego w oparciu o wprowadzenie dodatków w postaci paliw węglowodorowych takich jak: olej napędowy, benzyna U95 i etanol (bioetanol).
The research involved an analysis of normative requirements for rapeseed oil and its mixtures on the basis of a study completed by Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture - Germany. It has been observed that some of the ingredients have not been fully defined, and thus they may be subject to continuous changes in regard to both numerical value and research methodology. Own laboratory tests concern quality assessment of selected physical and chemical rapeseed oil properties, based on introducing additives in form of hydrocarbon fuels including: diesel oil, U95 petrol and ethanol (bioethanol).

Lightweight Stabilised Blockboard (LSB) panel is a product newly introduced onto the market. Research was carried out to determine the main physical and mechanical properties of the panel and to evaluate the effect of panel direction and moisture content. LSB panels have wide potential for application in the furniture industry, door production, transport, and construction board production. Potentially LSB panels are lighter, with lower density and higher form stability than solid wood and conventional fibreboard, particle board, oriented strand board (OSB) and plywood. LSB panels produced from solid pine wood core and High Density Fibreboard (HDF) skins are found to have the following physical properties: average moisture content 8.6%; density 450 kg·m,-3; shrinkage coefficients 0.36% %-1 for thickness and 0.25%·%-1 for length and width; thickness swelling 6.3% after 24 hours’ immersion in water. The following mechanical properties were determined: internal bond 0.51 N mm-2; screw withdrawal resistance 1076 N from plane and 553 N from edge; bending strength 13.4 N mm-2; and modulus of elasticity in static bending 1754 N mm-2.

Spelt grain harvested at four organic farms in Poland were assessed for physical and milling properties and flour size distribution. The spelt grain was diversified in relation to the majority of tested milling quality parameters. The environmental conditions had a significant impact on thousand kernel weight, vitreousness, PSI, kernel ash content, specific energy of milling and the particle size distribution of flour. The values of specific energy of milling, coefficient of grinding efficiency, rupture force and rupture energy in the spelt from the organic farms were significantly lower than common wheat. The highest spelt flour yield was obtained of kernels cultivated on ecological farm with semi-coherent and very dry soil was similar to that of common wheat; the milling yield of the spelt originating from other farms was by 9.5% to 12.7% less than from the wheat one. The greatest differences in PSD between the tested flours were detected for the values over 40 μm. The content of this fraction was determined in the range of app. 1% to almost 4.5%; the flour from common wheat contained app. 2.8% of this fraction.

The aim of the study was to determine the variability of annual ring width, share of latewood, density and compression strength along the grain of “Tabórz” Scots pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.). The wood samples for examination were obtained from three trunks of 260-year-old Scots pines felled in the Sosny Taborskie Nature Reserve. In total, 106 samples were obtained, with cross-sectional dimensions of 20 × 20 mm and a length of 30 mm along the grain. The mean values for all tested wood samples were as follows: annual ring width 1.28 mm, share of latewood 28.9%, wood density 0.487 g·cm-3, and compression strength 47.3 MPa. The least variability within trees was found for wood density and compressive strength along the grain. Very high positive correlation was found between wood density and compressive strength, and high positive correlations were found between share of latewood and wood density and between share of latewood and compressive strength. To the authors’ knowledge, the results presented here are the first empirical data published concerning the features of wood macrostructure, density and compression strength along the grain of the Tabórz Scots pine, the trunks of which are considered a valuable timber in Europe.
