Opis:
The aim of this work is an evaluation of the relation between risk behaviour of adolescents (bad eating habits, sedentary behaviour and abuse of psychoactive substances and stimulants) and fulfilling pro-health recommendations related with physical activity. The survey study was conducted in 2016 in Warsaw middle and high schools among 609 students using standardised international tools. World Health Organisation recommendations concerning pro-health physical activity level are met only by 24.2% of surveyed teenagers. Physical activity is a factor protecting teenagers from sitting for over 2 hours a day and bad eating habits. Prophylactic programs should consider promotion of physical activity.

Introduction: Although practicing physical activity according to recommendations has health benefits, many studies have reported that the level of participation is lower than recommended. Methods: In this behavioural epidemiological study, we used a correlational design to determine the contribution made by physical education (PE) classes to daily physical activity in a sample of 694 Spanish adolescents. Physical activity levels were determined using the Four by One-Day Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: 65.1% of adolescents comply with the recommendations on PE school days, compared to 36.6% who do so on the days with no PE class. Moreover, on PE school days, they obtain significantly higher physical activity level scores compared to days with no PE class. Conclusion: The study, therefore, shows the fundamental role of PE in increasing daily physical activity levels. Proposals to improve physical activity levels in these adolescents should be put forward, with educational centres being one of the best settings to achieve this goal.

The aim of this study is to see if there are significant relationships between different variables of physical condition and academic performance. Most literature shows that a relationship does exist, mainly emphasizing maximal oxygen consumption and academic performance. With regard to the other variables, more differences can be found. A total of 79 students participated in the study from the island of Majorca (Spain), ranging in age from 12.5 to 14.5 years. Students passed fitness tests, which were compared with their academic results. The results show a significant positive relationship between BMI and hand grip strength and significant negative relationships between BMI and note and between BMI and maximal oxygen consumption. No significant relationships have been found, however, between maximal oxygen consumption and note. Assessment of the importance of physical condition and therefore physical education in academic performance is of interest in order to implement the necessary hours of Physical Education. Furthermore, this subject should be characterised further in terms of its relation to the issue of health.

The aim of the research was to diagnose chosen individual factors of adolescents’ physical development (motor skills, physical fitness, motor activity needs) and their influence on their actual level of physical activity in their leisure time. The subjects of the research were students of Cracow’s junior high schools. The probability sample of 295 girls and 329 boys were examined. The method used was a survey. The results of the examinations showed that the chosen individual factors had an influence on the actual level of physical activity in their leisure time. The boys’ motor skills (in contrast with the rest of the factors) correlated the least with the increase of the actual level of physical activity in leisure time, and in case of the girls, they did not correlate at all. Youngsters’ individual predispositions to undertake physical activity in their free time were at a medium-high level. Nevertheless, their internalization did not take place because more than a half of the subjects undertook physical activities at a low level (51.0%) or not at all (7.4%).

Opis:
The impact of physical activity on mental health is widely described in literature. Less attention is given to factors which may modify this correlation, except for gender. The aim of this study was to conduct a qualitative assessment of such papers relating to children and young people. Selected papers were evaluated with regard to additional factors related to family, school and neighborhood. Attention was drawn to the definitions of these variables, the methods of analysis, and the content of the discussion. The starting point for this study included 7 systematic reviews published in 2006–2018. A total of 161 full articles described in detail in those reviews, and representing different research patterns, were selected for qualitative analysis. They met the criteria for the type of publication, mental health outcome, the direction of association, and the age group. A supplementary section of this paper contains a review of Polish literature from the Polish Medical Bibliography, and an analysis of national studies and some more recent papers not included in the analyzed reviews. It was demonstrated that 33 papers analyzed environmental variables to a greater degree than the characteristics of the sample. Twenty-three papers containing the results of statistical analyses were considered to be of particular interest. Almost 50% of these included both the socio-economic position of the family and the characteristics of the neighborhood. However, only 1 featured stratification of the sample with regard to contextual environmental variables. The obtained results are of great practical importance. Firstly, development of the research into environmental moderators should be advocated. Secondly, the social context in which adolescents grow up should be taken into account when designing intervention programs. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(4):423–39

Opis:
Background. The effects of a two-year educational Programme “Keep Balance” addressed to children and adolescents have been evaluated. Its purpose has been to implement the rules of proper nutrition and increasing the level of physical activity on the population level. Objective. The main objective of the evaluation was an indication if, after two years of programme activities, outcome indicators have been achieved. Material and methods. Approximately 400,000 pupils/students from 1600 educational units from the territory of the whole country have been included in the education programme. The efficiency evaluation has been carried out in a sample of n = 1506 pupils/students in the interventional group and n = 1589 in the control group. Education has been addressed to the entire school environment, pupils, students, parents, teachers, headmasters, and the local community. The survey methodology, body weight and height measurements, the BMI index, and EUROFIT physical fitness tests have been used to assess the effects of the education programme in the scope of knowledge and nutritional behaviour regarding physical activity. There were assumed outcome indicators. The certification of schools/kindergartens with “The Certificate of a School/Kindergarten Friendly to Nutrition and Physical Activity” has been used to evaluate the activation of school environments. Results. There was an improvement achieved over the assumed target points in the level of knowledge of pupils/students in the scope of nutrition and the role of physical activity, in the changes of nutritional habits, and in the results of physical fitness tests. There were achieved 20% increase in knowledge in the scope of nutrition and 5% increase in physical activity. There have been changes in the frequency in the consumption of the first breakfast before going to school (by 25% among the younger ones and by 17% among the older ones), an increase in the consumption of bottled water by 49% and reduction of sweet drinks by 19%. The percentage of the pupils/students consuming the recommended 5 meals increased by 33%. Physical fitness indicators were achieved over assumed 5% increase in the individual exercise tests. The Certificate was obtained after meeting the criteria and documenting the durability of the changes by 65% of 1600 educational units included in the Programme. A decrease in the frequency of overweight and obesity occurrence in the whole intervention sample by 1% was obtained; it was greater (but statistically insignificant) among younger students by 3.3% in comparison to the older ones where there was an increase of 1%. Conclusions. Summing up all achieved results the educational programme “Keep Balance” implemented on the population level aimed at children and adolescents has turned out to be effective and deserves to be continued after minor adjustments. Many positive changes have been identified as well as those that ought to be improved. Comprehensively included education and sometimes small changes in much of nutritional and physical behaviour have influenced the reduction of the percentage of pupils/students with excessive body weight, despite the fact that the average BMI has basically remained on the same level.

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of place of living, type of school, and family background on the physical activity and sedentary behavior of adolescents. 1,280 adolescents took part in the research: 694 boys and 586 girls aged 16–19 from Poland. Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) were evaluated by IPAQ-long version. A multiple regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of socio-economic factors on physical activity and sedentary behavior. The results suggested a difference between boys and girls in all domains of physical activity and sedentary behavior. The results also indicated that social factors influence physical activity and sedentary behavior in different ways. After adjusting the model to BMI and age tested, the key determinants for boys’ physical activity were: type of leisure time in the family and place of living, while for girls – type of school and type of leisure time in the family. Sedentary behavior of both sexes were strongly dependent on type of school, and – for boys – parents’ education and type of leisure time in the family were also important. The results suggest the need for continuous monitoring of physical activity and seated behavior as well as taking into account a wide spectrum of social factors in which adolescents grow. Interventions and strategies to promote physical activity should focus on family involvement and uniting family and educational institutions operating in local environments.

Background: Unhealthy habits (poor diet, smoking and hazardous alcohol drinking) often originate from early-life. We assessed the knowledge on selected cardiovascular and cancer risk factors, healthy habits and its implementation among adolescents and the correlation with their residence. Material and methods: A survey-based study (38-item inventory) was conducted among adolescents from urban and rural-urban areas recruited in two Tricity high-schools and one junior high school from Gniewkowo, respectively. Results: A total of 410 students (59% girls) form Tricity and 287 (51% girls) from Gniewkowo completed the inventory. The mean age was 15.3 years. Students from Gniewkowo spend weekly 8.9±6.2 hours on structured physical activity, which contrasts with 5.5±4.5hrs in Tricity(P<0.001). Gniewkowo residents restrained from alcohol consumption in 38.7% vs. 31.1% in Tricity (P=0.04); were active smokers at 9.4% vs. 4.2% (P=0.007); regular fruits and vegetables consumption was low in both Gniewkowo and Tricity 11.8% vs. 8.6% (P=0.19); respectively. The awareness of the risk factors of non-communicable diseases was more common amongst Tricity adolescents. This was consistently coupled with the knowledge on preventive methods. Conclusions: The level of knowledge on common non-communicable disease risk factors is higher among teenagers from urban areas, however this does not necessarily translate to more frequent introduction of healthy lifestyle.

The article analyzes the eating habits and preferences of children and adolescents from the “Folk Song and Dance Ensemble Częstochowa”, where the respondents develop their dancing skills and learn about the cultural habits of other nations. Based on the conducted research, it was found that only 57.1% of the respondents eat 4-5 meals a day, and the most omitted meal is afternoon tea (14.3% of the respondents eat afternoon tea every day). Most people eat sweets several times a day, once a day and 2-3 times a week (85.7%). The most popular and consumed drink among children and adolescents is mineral/spring water, but the amount of fluid consumed during the day is too little. Children and adolescents too rarely eat fish, which should be eaten twice a week, and vegetables that would be best in each meal and fruit, the daily consumption of which should be 2 portions. Team members also consume too little milk and dairy products during the day.

Introduction Adolescence is marked as a critical period of human life because of the rapid physical and sexual growth. Technological advances in recent decades have increased the interaction of adolescents with screen-based technologies. The adolescents have the unhealthiest diets of all age groups, and most adolescents do not meet the national guidelines for physical activity. Objectives: To assess physical activity, dietary pattern and screen time among urban adolescents and to find out association of Screen Time with different variables. Methods A cross sectional study carried out in Udaipur, Rajasthan with prior permission from ethical committee. The study included 250 adolescents (10 to 19 years) selected by multistage sampling method. The Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire of Godin and Shephard was used to find out weekly Physical Activity score. Eating habits were investigated using self-administered questionnaire in which we asked different questions about the food consumed by adolescents in a week. A Screen Time of ≥2 hours/ day was categorized as high sedentary behaviour, whereas a Screen Time <2 hours/ day was categorized as low sedentary behavior. Results In current study prevalence of High Screen Time and unhealthy diet was around 83% and 60% respectively. Around 25% had habit of taking breakfast regularly while less than 30% were taking meal without fail. Screen Time found to be associated significantly with physical activity p < 0.01, gender (p = 0.01) and diet p < 0.01. Conclusion Screen Time was found to be associated significantly with physical activity, gender and type of diet, whereas it has no role to play with phases of adolescence.

Opis:
This paper analyses the frequency and extent of physical activity (PA) among school-aged children and adolescents in Liechtenstein by regarding selected socio-demographic factors (gender, age and parents’ sports activity). The cross-sectional study is based on an online survey conducted in 2015 among 11-, 13- and 15-year-old pupils (N = 448). According to our findings, children and adolescents do sports in their leisure time 3 ½ days a week, resulting in 6 hours per week on average; the percentage of pupils who do not participate in any sport is less than 5 % in total. Despite high sport participation, only a quarter achieved the WHO recommendation of at least 60 min of moderate-tovigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day. However, a significant decrease in physical and sport activities together with increasing resignation from sport clubs is shown in secondary schools. As a result of this inadequacy, at the end of the compulsory school period, adolescents should be considered as one of the important target groups for health promotion programs. In addition, the relation discovered between the activity level of adolescents and the sport status of their parents emphasizes the high relevance of parents for their childrens’ PA socialisation.

Article present the possibilities of use dance classes and psychosocial factors in a specific environmental associated with among demoralized adolescents. In this paper presents research conducted on a group of adolescents whose behaviour is characterized by demoralization and whose commitment of criminal offences resulted in them becoming the subject of an confinement corrective measure, i.e. being placed in a youth educational centre. The Adjective Check List ACL created by H.G. Gough and A. Helibrun, as well as the Profile of Mood States (POMS) developed by McNair, Lorr and Droppleman were used in the research. After twelve weeks of systematic dance classes, the test was repeated and noticeable changes in self-perception of the surveyed girls were observed. The average values of 14 out of 37 scales of the ACL questionnaire after the end of the project differed significantly (p <0.05) compared to the results before the start of the project. Moreover, after each week of the project, a comparison of the survey results with the POMS questionnaire was carried out in terms of the severity of individual moods. The analysis shows that the subjects successively had a significant decrease in the level of all five negative states and an increase in positive mood

Steady decline in habitual physical activity in children and youth has resulted in an increase in body weight with age and a decline in functional ability. Hypokinesia in conjunction with poor diet and stress levels are prerequisites of lifestyle diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and obesity. In this partial research, being part of the VEGA research No. 1/1343/12 "Selected risk factors of obesity and exercise prevention", we looked at the incidence of health problems related to BMI and physical activity in college students. We calculated BMI based on anthropometric measurements of body height and weight. Using the questionnaire method, we collected data concerning subjectively assessed incidence of health problems and overall representation of physical activity (PA) in the lifestyle of respondents. The study group comprised 1,963 students, including 1,169 female and 794 male undergraduates from two Slovak universities. Health problems with the largest incidence were back pain, alergy, low blood pressure, headache, palpitation and respiratory diseases. Our research confirms that a greater representation of PA in students' lives positively relates to a lower BMI. The results of logistic regression confirm a significant relation between BMI and the following health problems: back pain, palpitation, high blood pressure, obesity, low blood pressure and respiratory illnesses. PA significantly corresponds with the occurence of health problems related to upper respiratory tract and high blood pressure.

The aim of the study is to assess the physical leisure time activity among the students of grade I–III of junior high school (aged 13–16) – during the school year and holidays – and identify possible causal factors of physical inactivity in this social group. The relationship between participation in sport for all during the school year (regular, periodic, sporadic) and during holidays (physically active/passive) and socio-demographic variables characterizing the structure was analyzed using the Chi 2 test. The relationship between respondents inactivity and those traits was assessed using log-linear analysis. The higher the grade (especially among girls), the more physically inactive individuals, the number of which grew during the school year as well as during holidays. The risk factors for inactivity included high BMI, living in the countryside and female sex. In case of girls (76.3%) the risk of inactivity increased by almost 1.4 times, as it did (OR = 0.75) with regard to living in rural areas (76.4%). The chance of being active increases more than 3-fold among those with normal BMI (28.0%) and the underweight (29.9%). Adolescents’ inactivity (increasing along with the grade pupils are in) points to the shortcomings of Polish process of education and an urgent need for system-based approach to promote active lifestyle in this social group.
