- The paper is devoted to the analysis of phraseology from the cognitive perspective. Through a comparative study of Polish and French idiomatic expressions, the author searches for analogies and dissimilarities between images representing poverty in the two analyzed languages. The studied material shows that linguistic representations of poverty, present in Polish and French idioms, are similar as far as conceptualization of this phenomenon is concerned but often different in the superficial structure. Such conclusions are not without significance for translation studies. Therefore the author mentions the main problems associated with translation in the field of phraseology. La représentation linguistique de la pauvreté dans la phraséologie polonaise et françaiseL’article est consacré à l’analyse de la phraséologie dans la perspective cognitive. À travers l’étude comparative des expressions figées, l’auteur vise à déceler des différences et des ressemblances dans les images représentant la pauvreté dans deux langues en question. Les résultats de l’analyse montrent que les représentations linguistiques de la pauvreté, contenues dans des phraséologismes polonais et français, se ressemblent en ce qui concerne la conceptualisation de ce phénomène et souvent divergent au niveau de la structure superficielle. Telles conclusions ne sont pas sans importance pour les études de traduction. L’auteur mentionne donc les principaux problèmes liés à la traduction dans le domaine de la phraséologie.
