Opis:
In the article, the author presents certain aspects concerning the constitution of science as a distinct domain of culture. Although civilizations antedating Greek civilization had many important achievements that today we would call scientific, science itself as having a definite object, method and aim appeared first in Greece. In Babylon and Egypt science had purely practical aims, such as counting and astrology. Among the Greeks, science possessed a theoretical dimension. The Greek concept of THEORIA signified science as well as the highest type of life man could achieve, the BIOS THEORETIKOS. Human knowledge progresses through stages. It passes through a phase where it has much in common with the knowledge possessed by brute animals, based on sensation and memory. At a later and higher phase, human knowledge is characterized by a more comprehensive experience than mere memory of facts, then by art, and finally by science, the crowning point of which is wisdom (philosophy).

In his article the author begins by defining what is meant by ‘science’ and ‘scientism.’ Second, he discusses some of the cultural dangers of scientism. Third, he gives several arguments why scientism should be rejected and why science needs metaphysics. Fourth, and finally, he concludes by noting how some of the questions and arguments raised in the article can be appropriated to help the general public understand the limits of science and the dangers of scientism.

Opis:
Erazm z Rotterdamu, Hugo Grocjusz, Boruch Spinoza, Wilhelm i Jakub van Granesande, Pieter van Musseheubroek, Herman Boerhave, Albert Schultens. Wpływ kultury holenderskiej widoczny jest także w Polsce w budownictwie renesansowym Wrocławia i Gdańska.
Culture is a formative factor of all human civilizational changes. According to W. Tatarkiewicz, J. Szczepański, A. L. Kroeber culture is perceived as inner experiences of every man: his intellectual, religious and aesthetic experiences, which are reflected in human activity. The element of spiritual culture is a kind of art which is a vague phenomenon, very difficult to define. Dutch artists considerably influenced the development of the European culture. Three characteristic periods of special importance are known in the history of development and art of the Netherlands: 1. The Roman period this was developed along with reinforcement of Christianity in this area; 2. The Flemish-Brabantish Gothic period which was typical during the economic development of the country at the end of the Middle Ages and at the beginning of the Modern Times; 3. The 17th Century, which was called The Golden Age, developed by Bourgeois Culture. Dutch Culture influenced the development of European Culture among others through architecture, painting and sculpture and also contributed to the development of science thanks to the works of such well-known people as Erasmus of Rotterdam, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, Wilhelm and Jacob van Granesande, Pieter van Musseheubroek, Herman Boerhave, and Albert Schultens. Dutch cultural influence is also evident in the construction industry in Poland, especially in Wroclaw and Gdansk Renaissance buildings.

Opis:
Peter Redpath is a distinguished historian of philosophy. He believes that the best way to acquire a philosophical education is through the study of philosophy’s history. Because he is convinced that ideas have consequences, he holds that the history of philosophy illuminates important events in history. Philosophy is a necessary condition for sound education, which, in turn, is a necessary condition for cultural and political leadership. Hence, the way educators and leaders shape culture reflects the effects of philosophy on culture. In light of this background, it is possible to discern in Redpath’s account of the history of philosophy a corresponding philosophy of history. This emerges as he explains how philosophers have produced changes in thinking that have profound consequences for the culture at large. Some of these changes, many of them significant, have been positive, but others have been disastrous. Much of Redpath’s philosophy of history diagnoses what went wrong in the history of philosophy so as to indicate why modern culture suffers considerable disorder. The good news is that Redpath’s philosophy of history prescribes ways to correct Western Civilization’s current malaise.

Opis:
The thesis about the end of philosophy is actual. It is declared in the situation of pragmatization of culture and underestimation of philosophical knowledge. Human world seems to be dominated by practical technical, consumer or religious way of thinking. Islamic religious fundamentalism expands its influence. The very philosophical thinking participates in pragmatization. The resignation of metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of first principles was defined within its framework on behalf of hermeneutics or the everyday philosophy. It offers to replace philosophy with poetry or exact sciences (cognitive science or sciences of communication). The philosophy is displaced from the educational programs not only in the schools, but also in the universities. In this situation the question of whether philosophy and philosophers are still needed, seems to be particularly justified.

Opis:
This article argues that, strictly speaking, from its inception with the ancient Greeks and for all time, philosophy and science are identical and consist in an essential relationship between a specific type of understanding of the human person as possessed of an intellectual soul capable of being habituated and a psychologically-independent composite whole, or organization. It maintains, further, that absence of either one of the extremes of this essential relationship cannot be philosophy/science and, if mistaken for such and applied to the workings of cultural institutions, will generate anarchy within human culture and make leadership excellence impossible to achieve. Finally, it argues that only a return to this “common sense” understanding of philosophy can generate the leadership excellence that can save the West from its current state of cultural and civilizational anarchy.

World War
Opis:
Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.
