Opis:
In this review we aimed to present important protozoan disease in goats, which are increasingly bred in Poland. Coccidiosis is the main cause of diarrhoea in young goats. The disease is caused by apicomplexan parasitic protozoans – Eimeria spp. Eimeriae are host-specific and never cross interspecies barrier even in ruminants. Goats at any age may be infected, however the clinical disease occurs most often in young animals from 3 weeks to 5 months of age. Poor management, stress and overcrowding are the most important factors associated with the clinical coccidiosis in goats. Eimeria spp. infection causes serious damage to the intestinal epithelium which results in severe watery diarrhea, dehydration, failure to thrive, poor weight gain and loss of productivity. Control of coccidiosis in goats is based on the improvement of management and environmental conditions, preventive use of medicines (coccidiostats), and treatment of clinical cases.

Opis:
This article presents the four, fibrous ostheodystrophy cases at a goat farm in northern Poland. This metabolic disorder is an example of secondary nutritional hyperparathyroidism arising from a chronic, persistent consumption of excessive dietary phosphorus. The disease is well known in goats worldwide. The initial symptoms can be nonspecific and include increasing lethargy, difficult swallowing, that is evidence of pharyngeal involvement, weight loss, and a tendency for recumbency. Although all bones may be affected, the mandible and jaw are predisposed to reveal visible defects as first. Clinical lesions can be reversed, but only if they are detected early, through dietary treatment, involving reduction of phosphorus levels and correction of the calcium to phosphorus ratio.

Opis:
Aspergillosis holds a very special place in veterinary and human medicine, because it is the main type of mycoses, affecting birds and mammals, including humans. The objective of this review was to synthesize the current knowledge of aspergillosis in wild avifauna in the context of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this infection. Aspergillosis typically occurs after inhalation of ubiquitously available spores, but localized infections of the eye or skin are also possible. Acute disease may occur following exposure to a substantial number of spores from a point source. The more chronic forms are slowly progressing infections that affect birds showing some degree of immunodeficiency and may result from regular inhalation of spores. Aspergillosis usually presents with the development of progressive and severe dyspnea with gasping, accelerated openmouth breathing, tail bobbing, and sometimes a non-productive cough. Gurgle, rales, or wheezy sounds and a change in the voice may be heard in cases of mycotic tracheitis. Treatment of avian aspergillosis, when possible, is not always successful because of the often advanced stage of the disease when the diagnosis is confirmed, the lack of pharmacokinetic data on antifungal drugs in most avian species, the failure of drugs to penetrate target tissues, and the frequent presence of concurrent diseases and immunosuppression. An oral solution of itraconazole has recently been registered as the first antifungal product for ornamental birds in Europe. Moreover, aspergillosis prevention measures are based on two main axes: controlling the level of exposure and minimizing the stressors.

Opis:
We aimed to present headshaking syndrome (HS), that is used to be understood as a behavioral problem, but a broad research proved, it is a disorder mostly related to trigeminal nerve neuropathy. The common symptoms of HS are spontaneous and frequently repetitive head movements, believed to be caused by hypersensitivity of trigeminal nerve. It has been proved, that horses diagnosed as idiopathic headshakers had much lower thresholds for activation of infraorbital branch of maxillary nerve. Due to the similarities with human trigeminal neuralgia, there were suggestions for similarities of etiopathogenesis on a nerve demyelination but since no pathological findings have proved the theory, the functional origin of HS is currently suggested. There is no gold standard for the diagnosis and treatment of HS. One of the most common pharmacological treatment protocols was the combination of cyproheptadine and carbamazemine, but latest studies show very promising effects of much less invasive, percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENST), electroacupuncture and transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS).

Equine piroplasmosis (EP), is a tick-borne disease caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. EP affects all domestic and wild equids and the clinical signs are related to intravascular haemolysis. The illness is present in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions and is maintained in susceptible host population as long as competent vectors occur. Piroplasmosis remains a vast problem in horse industry as clinical manifestations lead to abortions, withdrawal from training due to the condition deterioration and even to death. Difficulties with diagnosis and treatment make the illness even more serious, as the medical protocol without harmful side-effects hasn’t been established. Even though multiple attempts were done, the vaccine is unavailable.

Opis:
African horse sickness is a highly infectious and devastating disease that causes great suffering and many fatalities in equids. It commonly affects horses, mules, donkeys and dogs. The disease is caused by nine different serotypes of the African horse sickness virus, ASHV, genus Orbivirus (Reoviridae), and it is spread mainly by hematophagous arthropods of the Culicoides. Some crossreactions are observed between 1 and 2,3 and 7,5 and 8, and 6 and 9 serotypes. Clinical forms of AHS include peracute pulmonary, subacute cardiac, and mixed as well as subclinical (horse sickness fever). The most severe, with mortality rates exceeding 95%, is the pulmonary form, accompanied by fever, mild depression, sweating, spasmodic coughing, anorexia and respiratory distress. The subacute cardiac form with a mortality of about 50%, is characterized by fever, swelling of the head, neck and supraorbital fossae and sometimes, petechial hemorrhages in the eyes. The mildest form of the disease is generally not fatal and is accompanied by a low grade fever, anorexia, depression and congestion of the mucous membranes. The most common cases with a 70% mortality rate, are mixture of the pulmonary and cardiac forms. Differential diagnosis include equine encephalosis virus (also Orbivirus), equine infectious anemia, equine viral arteritis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, or theileriosis. Clinical AHS cases have also been described in dogs, with acute respiratory distress syndrome or sudden death. Diagnosis of the disease is based on typical clinical signs and lesions, a history consistent with vector transmission and confirmation by laboratory detection of virus and/or anti-virus antibodies. Currently, prevention and control of African horse sickness is based on administration of live attenuated vaccines and control of the arthropod vectors.

Opis:
Bluetongue virus, BTV, (Orbivirus; Reoviridae), can infect many domesticated and wild ruminants including cattle, sheep, goats, various cervids and wildebeest. Bluetongue can be found on all continents except Antarctica. The virus is transmitted by the midges (Culicoides), the only significant natural transmitters of bluetongue. Multiple BTV serotypes can be found in many regions of the world. Serotypes 1, 8 and 26 can be transmitted between ruminants in close contact with blood and semen. Clinical cases of bluetongue occur mainly in sheep, while subclinical infections seem to predominate in most other species. Bluetongue virus can be found in blood from live animals and in spleen, lymph nodes or bone marrow samples collected at necropsy. RT-PCR tests are widely used to identify viral RNA in clinical samples, and identify the serotype. A variety of vaccination strategies are available for immunization of ruminant livestock against BTV infection. This article aims at presentation of achievements and failures in the worldwide efforts of bluetongue control.

Opis:
Borna disease virus (BoDV, Orthobornavirus; Bornaviridae), is the causative agent of Borna disease, mostly lethal polioencephalomyelitis that affects primarily horse and sheep but also and other mammals. It is ssRNA virus, that replicates within the nucleus of target cells, at first at the entry site, than it migrates intraaxonally towards the brain, cerebellum and medulla oblongata. The infection of the central nervous system results in severe neurological disorder that is caused primarily by the hosts cell-mediated immunopathological reactions. The clinical manifestations of the bornaviral diseases are highly variable. Thus, in addition to acute, lethal encephalitis, they can cause persistent neurologic disease associated with diverse behavioral changes. They also cause a severe retinitis resulting in blindness. The zoonotic potential of the virus has been a matter of an unresolved scientific dispute for decades. The impact of BDV on mental health still remains controversial. BoDV‑1 can induce encephalitis cases, establishing the infection as a potentially lethal zoonosis which can impact both immunocompromised and healthy individuals. Diagnosis can be made serologically (ELISA, IF, Western blot), but detection of antigen markers in peripheral white blood cells (ELISA, FACS) and/or in the brain combined with nucleic acid amplification (nested RT-PCR), is more profitable.

Opis:
This article aims at presentation of disease in sheep that follows upset in gut microbiota, due to sudden changes to a rich diet. Enterotoxemia (pulpy kidney disease), most commonly occurs in rapidly growing or weaned lambs, when there is a rapid shift to a low fiber and high carbohydrate diet. The disease develops when Clostridium perfringens type D, that normally inhabits the animal intestines, begins to multiply fast and produces an epsilon toxin that results in toxemia and frequently, the sudden death. Rapid multiplication of type D and epsilon toxin production is favored by excess of dietary starch in the small intestine. C. perfringens type D can also cause a chronic form of the disease – focal, symmetrical encephalomalacia. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs, history of sudden death cases in herd and confirmation by necropsy, brain histopathology, bacteriological examination, RT-PCR and ELISA. Treatment, prevention and control of pulpy kidney disease depends on serotherapy with antitoxin, supportive treatment and correction of diet and vaccination. Effective vaccines are commercially available. All animals in the herd, especially the young ones, should be vaccinated to minimize the risk of enterotoxemia in sheep.

Opis:
Maedi-visna is a multi-systemic disease of sheep caused by a non-oncogenic, exogenous retrovirus of the Lentiviridae subfamily. It is mainly transmitted through the ingestion of milk from infected sheep, although disease can be spread within flocks through direct contact and transmission can occur also in utero. Maedi usually begins insidiously and leads to a classical interstitial pneumonia. On postmortem examination, the lungs may be 2-4 times heavier than normal, due to decreased elasticity and fibrosis. Regional lymph nodes are enlarged with formation of lymphoid follicles with active germinal centers. Visna - the neurological form of the disease, is characterized by chronic and active meningoencephalomyelitis and chorioiditis with massive infiltrations of mononuclear cells around the blood vessels, microglial nodules formation and astrogliosis. Virus isolation is very specific but of variable sensitivity. The cytopathic effects are characteristic, consisting of the appearance of stellate cells and syncytia. The diagnostic methods currently used are based on the detection of either antibodies or the viral genome. The three most commonly tests used, are the PCR and RT-PCR, agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Western blot analysis and radio-immunoprecipitation are also performed, but only in specialized laboratories. No commercial vaccines are available to control infection, and to date, monitoring programs have proved to be the only effective tool in controlling this disease.

Opis:
Newcastle disease (ND), caused by avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV‑1), is among the most important diseases in poultry and other bird species, Affected birds can present clinical signs, which range from a mild, almost unnoticed respiratory distress to severe or even highly fatal disease forms. There is no treatment for Newcastle disease – it’s occurrence in commercial poultry is reportable to the World Organisation of Animal Health (OIE), and it impacts international trade in poultry business. Prevention relies on biosecurity procedures and vaccinations. Many countries introduced eradication policies with compulsory slaughter of infected flocks. Due to all these facts, Newcastle disease remains the serious threat to commercial poultry production throughout the world. Currently, there are classification systems of Newcastle disease viruses (NDV), which are mainly related to the clinical signs of the disease. The progress in the development of new vaccines against ND in recent years, may present some difficulties in selecting the best vaccination program. The main aim of this article is to present the current classification and to review the different approaches to ND vaccination methods, with description of all, available worldwide, vaccine types. This knowledge can help the poultry vet to make the best choice for vaccination schedule, accordingly to the local conditions and administrative requirements.

Opis:
This review aims to summarize the latest development in the epidemiology, pathology, clinic and control of lumpy skin disease (LSD), with the focus on its transboundary spread, possible emergence and economic implications for on cattle production. This notifiable disease is endemic in African and Middle East countries but has started spreading to Asia and south-east Europe, affecting Greece and Bulgaria and countries in the Balkans. Lumpy skin disease is mainly transmitted to infection-free areas by transport of infected animals and by virus vectors, as blood-feeding insects, such as certain species of flies and mosquitoes, or ticks. There is also growing importance of the spread of wildlife, the potential reservoirs of the disease. Generally, fever, anorexia, hypersalivation, lacrimation and characteristic eruptions with painful nodules within the skin, on the muzzle and within the nasal and buccal mucous membranes, on the udder, on genital and rectal mucous membranes. The severe drop in milk production, also abortions, infertility and sometimes death are the clinical manifestations of the disease in a herd. Although the mortality rate is usually less than 10%, the disease morbidity rate can be as high as 100%. The economic significance of LSD is of great concern, given that it threatens international trade and could be used as bioterrorism weapon. Vaccination, strict quarantine measures, limited movement of livestock along with vectors control could be effective for preventing the spread of the disease. Homologous vaccines are more effective than sheeppox virus strain vaccines.
