Opis:
The problem of lube oil consumption has been the point of interest of scientists for years, first because of economy and later - because of stringent standards of environment protection. From the point of economy lube oil consumption is not a problem of modern engines. On the other hand even a brief look proves that there is a quite wide range of admissible consumption from negligible values up to even l litr per 100 km. The question is why this range is so wide. Possible answer is that engine manufacturers leave so wide margin taking into consideration situations of very short trips, mainly in towns, when engine runs not fully warmed up with greater clearances, especially within the piston-cylinder assembly. Any oil consumption results in emission of particulate matter, which conveys a weighty number of hydrocarbons of which the most manifest serious hazardous properties, mainly carcinogenic ones. Nowadays, standards of environment protection require for instance the use of diesel particle filters and the excessive oil consumption could lead to the premature damage of these devices. Correct operation of the DPF could be disturbed not only by the excessive oil consumption but also by the use of improper oil, i.e. the non-low ash one. Certain additives that improve oil properties could produce ash as a result of oil combustion, which could clog filter irreversibly.

Opis:
Particulate matter (PM) and gaseous compounds (SO2, NOx, VOC) emitted by diesel engines causes serious global environmental problems and health impact. Despite numerous evidences about the harmfulness of diesel particles, the PM emission by diesel engines used by ships, cars, agricultural machines, or power generators is still unregulated, and the efficient removal of PM from diesel exhausts is still the major technological challenge. In order to comply with the International Maritime Organization regulation, the NOx emission is reduced by using selected catalytic reactor, and sulphur oxide emission has been reduced by using fuels of low sulphur content. However, both of those measures cannot be used for the reduction of PM emission produced during combustion of marine fuels. The lack of appropriate regulations results from insufficiently developed technology, which could remove those particles from exhaust gases. Conventional scrubbers currently available on the market remove only sulphur oxide with required collection efficiency, but the collection efficiency for PM2.5 is below 50%. The article discusses the technical means used for the removal of PM from marine diesel engines via applying electrohydrodynamic methods, in particular electrostatic agglomeration, as a method of nanoparticles coagulation to larger agglomerates, which could operate in two-stage electrostatic precipitation systems, and electrostatic scrubbers, which remove particles by electrically charged water droplets. The experimental results were obtained for a 2-stroke 73 kW diesel engine fuelled with marine gas oil (MGO). The agglomerator allowed increasing the collection efficiency from diesel exhausts for PM2.5 particles by about 12%, compared to electrostatic precipitator operating without agglomerator, and the total mass collection efficiency was above 74%. The collection efficiency of electrostatic scrubber was higher than 95wt.%. The advantage of using the electrostatic scrubber is that it can also reduce the SO2 emission by more than 90%, when HFO is used.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of examination of particulate matter emission from the Diesel engine FPT 1.3 MJT simultaneously fuelled with diesel oil and natural gas CNG. The basic premise for engine adaptation was the addition of a small amount of CNG to reduce exhaust gas opacity and particulate matter emission. At this assumption, diesel oil remained the basic fuel, with contribution amounting to 0,70-0,85 of total energy delivered to the engine. The dual fuel engine was examined using an original controller installed in the Diesel engine FPT 1.3 MJT which controlled the diesel fuel dose. The dose of the injected natural gas was controlled by changing the opening time of gas injectors at constant pressure in the gas collector. The examined issues included the exhaust gas opacity, and the total number and fractional distribution of the emitted particles. The measurements were performed at twenty selected measuring points corresponding to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) test. The performed tests have demonstrated a positive effect of gas addition on exhaust gas opacity and particulate matter emission. Depending on test conditions, the exhaust gas opacity was reduced by 10÷92%, and the total number of particles by 30÷40%. The performed tests have revealed that a small addition of gas can reduce the load of the DPF filter, extend its lifetime, and increase engine reliability. Longer time intervals between successive DPF filter regenerations improve ecological properties of the engine.

Opis:
In 2008 the International Maritime Organization - IMO decided to strengthen the requirements for new ships from 2011 - Tier II. However, for Emission Control Areas (ECAs), such as the Baltic Sea, stringent rules will apply from 1 January 2016 for new ships - Tier III. The new standards introduce restrictions on exhaust emissions from diesel engines - NOx and SOx. The paper presents proposal of new design an existing exhaust gas system of experimental marine diesel engine, which is situated in the Laboratory of Maritime Academy in Szczecin. The conception is due to meet to new environmental regulations. Arrangements of exhaust line, CFD model of the SCR reference plant, CFD model - inlet and outlet boundary conditions, pressure loss model for the catalytic elements, simulation results - streamlines, velocity distribution, reaction progress distribution ate presented in the paper as well design description of system of laboratory- 4-stroke and turbocharged engine. . The means of the reduction systems are based on conventional marine exhaust gas installation that includes noise silencer and soot-catcher. The after-treatment methods do not introduce significant changes in engine arrangement and operation. A new gas purifying system should be installed in the engine exhaust gas system.

Opis:
This paper describes the experimental method - using non-thermal plasma reactor to cleaning exhaust gases - focused on PM compound. The demonstrator NTP reactor assembly was built as the by-pass in the real exhaust gas after-treatment system, in marine diesel engine. The reactor used to experiment is called - DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) type, The main aim of investigation was to analyze exhaust gas PM compounds under steady load of the engine. Test bench construction enables direct exhaust stream (main exhaust duet by-pass) to plasma reactor exposure with no additional components (coolers, orifices) that can change the exhaust gas properties. A new monitoring PM analyzing system, which can measure soot and SOF in low mass level, has been engaged. It consist of a diffusion charging (DC) detector with a dilution device for soot measurement, and two differential flame ionization detection (FID) method, which uses two FID detectors with separate sample lines. Exhaust emission reduction strategy for ships, Particulate Matters - PM in exhaust gas, non-thermal plasma reactor, experimental test bed and procedure, an example of reactor power measurement, test results provided into seven stages are presented in the paper.

To identify amid PM particulates the particles other than soot, the filters used in diesel engine testing have been analysed. Analysed filters had been applied in the study on a 6-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine, technically proficient, working at constant torque and speed. The particles captured on the filter were put under observational study using the possibilities of electron microscope and spectroscopic analysis. The testing was done on a scanning electron microscope JSM-5800 of the firm Jeol (Japan), coupled with an X-ray spectrometer Link ISIS of the firm Oxford Instruments Ltd. (United Kingdom). It was found, that on the filter surface, besides the soot particles of uniform colour and structure, there were also other particles of different colour and form. These particles were localized and examined in terms of the chemical elements in their composition. Their dimensions also were determined. Metal particles were identified: ferrous alloy, zinc alloy and the silicon alloy. Amid the particulate matter, some heterogeneous particles were identified. They had the form of agglomerates of different structure, compound of elementary particles of different origins and materials.
