Arthropods may be obligatory or facultative vectors of transmissible diseases. Various relations exist between arthropod reservoirs and vectors of which the most important are trophic, topic and phoric associations. Arthropods could be biological or mechanical vectors and transmit pathogens in an active or passive way. Among different taxonomic groups of arthropod vectors the mostimportant are hard ticks (Ixodidae). The following biological features of ticks support their role as reservoirs and vectors of disease agents: anatomical structure; feeding mechanisms, mostly an ability of the intake of large volumes of host blood and an ability of the injection of large amounts of saliva into host's body; change of hosts during life cycle; a possibility of the long persistence of pathogens in tick's population due to the transstadial, transovarial, transspermal and hyperparasitic transmission, and parallel feeding; longevity of ticks compared to rodents; a possibility of geographical distribution.

Pulmonate and prosobranch snails, being necessary hosts for parthenogenetic generations of digenetic trematodes, participate in transmission of all trematodoses important from medical point of view. Role of particular gastropods in epidemiology of these diseases is discussed in details. Invasion of land snails and slugs is mainly passive by eggs containing developed miracidia, white enter ofthese larvae into snails inhabiting fresh-water environments is usually active. Generations in the snail host between miracidia and cercariae vary considerable, depending upon the fluke species. Generally, the cercaria is produced by the sporocyst or the redia. Cercariae usually actively penetrate out of the infected snail and enter water. Leaving out of account cases of encystation of cercariae in external environment (liver flukes of the family Fasciolidae) and active penetration into the final host (blood flukes of the family Schistosomatidae), encystation of these larvae takes place in the second intermediate host. Cercariae of medically important flukes may develop into metacercariae in tissues of fish (liver flukes - Opisthorchis felineus, Clonorchis sinensis, intestinal flukes - Heterophyes heterophyes, Metagonimus yokogawai, Troglotrema salmincola), as well as in crustaceans (pulmonary flukes of the genus Paragonimus), insects (the bipathogenic liver fluke Dicrocoelium dendriticum and other species of the family Plagiorchiidae incidentally found in man), and gastropods (flukes of the family Echinostomatidae, among them perhaps the best known is the Oriental species - Echinostoma ilocanum). In prevention and control of human trematodoses, especially in endemic foci, elimination of snail hosts is a great importance. Using molluscides may be objectionable from the stadpoint of environmental modification through their toxicity to other organisms. Biological control of snail hosts is more attractive. It includes introduction and management of predators, parasites, or pathogens, and intramolluscan competition. Moreover, certain slugs and terrestrial snails participate in transmission of nematode larval stages, including species known as pathogenic for man - the strongylid nematodes of the genus Angiostrongylus). Such infections may be prevented by abstanding from eating raw or inadequately cooked molluscs in endemic areas.

Attempts were made to identify the causative orgamsm of Lyme disease in Szczecin from tick Ixodes ricinus as a vector. Ticks were collected in 1997 year in forest areas of Szczecin, from localites associated with numerous attendance of people. The method used in this study was the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on the flagellin structural gene fla of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto. The flagellin PCR primer set reaction was conservative for B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii and B. garinii. The overall prevalence of B. burgdorferi sensu lato, in tick population studied was 8.8%. The female, nymphs and larves of Ixodes ricinus were infected almost just the some - about 10%, when the male 2.5% only.

Presently acquired results are the outcome of, as for today, pilot-scale, preliminary study, although they were based on a tick (Ixodes ricinus) population of 533 individuals, collected from the vicinity of Szczecin. The areas sampled have been considered as recreational, which means they are frequented by a large number of people. The ticks were collected in 1996 in two seasons: spring-summer and summer-autumn. The overall prevalence of the spirochetes B. burgdorferi sensu lato, in the tick population studied, was 12.6%, while that of the spring-summer season reached 25.5%, decreasing in the summer-autumn season down to 2.3%.

Opis:
The studies were carried out between 1997-1999 within the administrative district of Toruń. Forty sports pigeon breeders together with their pigeons were under study annually. The collected materiał allowed noticing the following issues: in 1997 and 1998 the Argas reflexus (Fabricius, 1794) was present in dovecotes (individuals) and the breeds' owners were pricked. In 1998 numerous specimens of the A. rejlexus were obtained from the materiał from the sanitary-epidemiological station. The specimens were collected from the bodies of the people, family members and from their flat located on the highest third floor of the old house. In the miteinfected dovecotes and in the old houserooms, the following steps were suggested: mechanical cleansing, whitewashing, disinfecting, and triple disinsecting, with fourteen-day-long intervals. The people with the symptoms of acariosis were subjected to treatment with calcium, antiallergic, and anti-fever mixtures, and, in some cases, cortisone ointments were applied. In spite of a considerable growth in the symptoms, the used methods turned out to be successful in all the studied cases.

Opis:
In the last decade new tick-transmitted zoonoses have emerged as threats to the public health in Europe. They are mostly due to infection by Borrelia burgdorferi s.I., Babesia divergens, B. microti and Ehrlichia sp. All these pathogens are transmitted by the rodent-feeding ticks of Ixodes persulcatus „complex". Also there is first serological information of coexistence of antibodies to B. burgdorferi, B. microti and Ehrlichia sp. in human exposured to these multiple tick-transmitted pathogens. Actually in Poland, the identification of the host species that act as zoonotical reservoir for these pathogens on which the competent vector becomes infected, is crucial to understand the dynamics of enzootie cycle of these pathogens. It is also important to assess the risk factor of infection in different habitats, especially in environmental condition where changing in farming system has left great land area under grassland or pasture, e.g. in Mazury Lakes District Under such circumstances, susceptible rodent species, at least for two of these pathogens: B. micrnti and B. burgdorferi s.l., increasingly became competent reservoirs. This aspect is currently receiving considerable attention in Europe.
