New suid and sanithere material from Wadi Moghra, early Miocene, Egypt, is described and discussed. The new material greatly improves the sample size and diversity of suoids known from North Africa, and includes one species of Sanitheriidae and three species of Kubanochoerinae. The Moghra suoid assemblage most closely resembles that from Gebel Zelten, Libya, suggesting that at least part of the Moghra deposits may overlap in time with part of Zelten, i.e., is equivalent in age to MN 4–5 of the European mammal zonation, or PIII of the East African one. Information from suids and sanitheres is consistent with previous interpretations, that the Moghra deposits were formed under swampy and littoral paleoenvironmental conditions.

Gogia parsleyi Zamora sp. nov. and Gogia sp. are described from two different echinoderm assemblages, both from the middle Cambrian of the Murero Formation (Iberian Chains, NE Spain). Gogia parsleyi is reconstructed and described on the basis of fifteen complete or partial specimens and numerous isolated plates. It is characterised by spiralled brachioles, simple epispires, sometimes covered by stereomic domes or tiny cover plates, and by thecal plates arranged in subregular circlets. This gogiid population comprises juveniles, advanced juveniles and mature individuals. The material was found in the upper part of the Murero Formation (upper Caesaraugustian–lower Languedocian). Gogia sp. is represented by two almost complete specimens and several isolated plates from the lower part of the Murero Formation (lower Caesaraugustian). The genus Gogia was first described in Western Gondwana from the Languedocian (upper middle Cambrian) of France, but the material from Spain is older and represents the oldest record of this genus in Gondwana, suggesting an early migration from Laurentia. The gogiids are well preserved in two echinoderm Lagerstätten, which, together with other echinoderms, comprise the majority of the fossil fauna. Both levels are derived from obrution deposits produced in calm and open marine conditions, sometimes affected by sporadic storms. Their holdfast morphology suggests that these gogiids were low−tier suspension feeders, living attached to trilobite fragments in a soft, muddy environment.

The shape and extent of the membranous brachioptagium in pterosaurs remains a controversial topic for those attempting to determine the aerodynamic performance of the first vertebrate fliers. Various arguments in favour of the trailing edge terminating against either the torso or hip, the femur, the ankle, or different locations for various taxa, has resulted in several published reconstructions. Uncertainty over the correct model is detrimental to both aerodynamic and palaeoecological studies that are forced to simultaneously consider multiple and highly variable configurations for individual taxa. A review of relevant pterosaur specimens with preserved soft tissues or impressions of the wing membrane, however, strongly suggests that the trailing edge of the wing extended down to the lower leg or ankle in all specimens where the brachiopatagium is completely preserved. This configuration is seen across a phylogenetically broad range of pterosaurs and is thus likely to have been universally present throughout the Pterosauria. Support for opposing hypotheses where the trailing edge terminates against the body, hip, or knee are based on several specimens where the wing membrane is either incomplete or has undergone post−mortem contraction. An ankle attachment does not rule out a high aspect ratio wing as the curvature of the trailing edge and the ratio of the fore to hind limbs also play a major role in determining the final shape of the membrane.

Limnogyrinus elegans (Fritsch) is the most primitive micromelerpetontid temnospondyl from the Upper Carboniferous of Nýřany, Czech Republic. Arecent revision of the taxon by Werneburg (1994) attributed to this species a skull in dorsal aspect which was significantly larger than any previously reported and showed evidence of snout elongation. Restudy of this specimen demonstrates it to be a skull, visible in ventral aspect, of a juvenile of Cochleosaurus bohemicus, a more primitive edopoid temnospondyl, which is frequent in the Nýřany assemblage. Werneburg’s diagnosis of Limnogyrinusis revised and the problems of constructing ontogenetic series are discussed.

The Late Carboniferous amphibian genus Limnerpeton Fritsch, 1881 is revised on the basis of the type specimens of the eight original species described by Fritsch using material from Nýřany, Třemošná and Kounov, now in the Czech Republic. The type species Limnerpeton modestum is a nomen dubium restricted to a mandible that almost certainly belongs to an amphibamid temnospondyl but is not critically diagnostic. “Limnerpeton” laticeps and “Limnerpeton” macrolepis lectotypes are both small individuals of the same taxon as the later described Mordex calliprepes Steen, 1938 and thus form part of the hypodigm of Mordex laticeps comb. nov. “Limnerpeton” elegans is now Limnogyrinus elegans and is a member of the temnospondyl family Micromelerpetontidae. “Limnerpeton” obtusatum is a specimen of the microsaur Microbrachis pelikani. “Limnerpeton” dubium is an indeterminate tetrapod, probably either a temnospondyl or a pelycosaur. “Limnerpeton” difficile is a nomen dubium but the type is probably a small specimen of the tuditanomorph microsaur Crinodon limnophyes. “Limnerpeton” caducum is almost certainly a specimen of the ophiderpetontid aïstopod Oestocephalus granulosus. Several other described small temnospondyls from Nýřany are discussed and shown to be specimens of either Limnogyrinus elegans, Mordex laticeps or Amphibamidae incertae sedis. The tetrapod fauna at Nýřany includes four dissorophoid temnospondyls as proposed by Milner (1986) but with two changes in nomenclature. They comprise the branchiosaurid Branchiosaurus salamandroides, the micromelerpetontid Limnogyrinus elegans, the amphibamid Platyrhinops cf. lyelli and the primitive trematopid Mordex laticeps. These represent four of the five major dissorophoid families and demonstrate that the group had already diversified by the late Westphalian.

The choristoderan reptile Monjurosuchus is described from the Lower Cretaceous Tetori Group of Japan on the basis of an associated specimen from the Kuwajima Formation, Ishikawa Prefecture, and more fragmentary remains from the contemporaneous Okurodani Formation, Gifu Prefecture. This is the first report of Monjurosuchus from Japan, but a long−necked choristodere, Shokawa, has already been recorded from these deposits. Monjurosuchus was first described from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Biota of China, although it has only recently been recognised as a choristodere. As reconstructed, the Japanese Monjurosuchus differs from the type species, Monjurosuchus splendens, in the structure of the postorbital region, reduction of the quadratojugal, a slender parietal with a deep groove along the interparietal suture, and elongation of the jugal. As in M. splendens, the lower temporal fenestrae are closed. A cladistic analysis was performed in order to place Japanese and Chinese taxa, including the incompletely described Chinese long−necked Hyphalosaurus lingyanensis, into choristoderan phylogeny. The results support the monophyly of Neochoristodera and of a Sino−Japanese clade of long necked choristoderes. The placement of the European Tertiary Lazarussuchus remains problematic, but the analysis supports its placement within Choristodera rather than on the stem. The identification of Monjurosuchus from Japan provides an additional link between the fossil assemblages of the Tetori Group and those of the slightly younger Jehol Biota of China.

Intraspecific variability of the herein emended diacrodian acritarch Lusatia dendroidea is described based on late Cambrian (Furongian) well preserved material from Spain, the High Arctic of Russia, and the East−European Platform. L. dendroidea, displays bipolar asymmetric morphology and, as originally defined, consists of three long major processes originating from the “corners” of its vesicle. Specimens with one, two and four major processes are considered to represent morphological variations of the most common three process form. Based on its narrow stratigraphic range, widespread palaeogeographic distribution, and distinctive morphology, L. dendroidea is an excellent guide fossil for the Furongian.

Three species of bradoriid arthropods from the lower to middle Cambrian transitional interval of Scania, southern Sweden, are described and illustrated: Beyrichona tinea from the top of the traditional lower Cambrian (Gislöv Formation; Ornamentaspis? linnarssoni Zone), and Hipponicharion eos and Alutella sp. from the basal portion of the traditional middle Cambrian (lowermost part of the Alum Shale Formation). The bradoriid fauna compares most closely with others previously described from western and eastern Avalonia (New Brunswick and England). The record of B. tinea suggests a correlation between the “Protolenus Zone” (Hupeolenus Zone) of western Avalonia and the O.? linnarssoni Zone of Scandinavia. Hipponicharion eos appears to be a fairly long−ranging species as it has previously been recorded from upper lower Cambrian or lower middle Cambrian strata in New Brunswick, Poland, and probably Sardinia. The record of H. eos from the lowermost part of the Alum Shale Formation suggests that this largely unfossiliferous interval in the Scanian succession is not younger than the Acadoparadoxides oelandicus Superzone. The genus Alutella has not previously been recorded from the Acado−Baltic Province.

Megalospheric forms of Western Tethyan late Bartonian to late Priabonian involute Heterostegina from numerous localities, marking different ecological conditions, were morphometrically investigated. They belong to three species, H. armenica, H. reticulata, and H. gracilis based on the presence/absence of granulation, on the chamberlet characteristics and on the relative size of proloculus. Within these species a very rapid evolution could be observed in the reduction of the number of operculinid chambers, in the increase of the number of chamberlets and partially in the increase of the proloculus size. This evolution is demonstrated by stratigraphic superpositions in several localities (especially in the Mossano section), and is supported also by the change of co−occurring fossils, starting with the disappearance of large−sized Nummulites, then followed by the appearance of the genus Spiroclypeus and then by the disappearance of orthophragmines of middle Eocene acme. Based on the reduction of operculinid chambers, two chronosubspecies of Heterostegina armenica and seven of H. reticulata are defined biometrically (four of them: H. armenica tigrisensis, H. reticulata tronensis, H. r. hungarica, and H. r. mossanensis are introduced here). This allows to subdivide the Shallow Benthic Zone (SBZ) 18 into three and SBZ 19 into two subzones. The extremely rapid evolution of H. reticulata allows to calibrate larger foraminiferal events around the middle/late Eocene boundary. The extinction of large−sizedNummulitesseems to be heterochronous in the late Bartonian in having migrated eastward, while the first appearance of Spiroclypeus is shown to be synchronous at the base of the Priabonian. The middle/upper Eocene (= Bartonian/Priabonian) boundary is to be placed at the base of the Priabona marls in the Mossano section corresponding to the SBZ 18/19 limit, to the first appearance of genus Spiroclypeus, to that of Nummulites fabianii and of Heterostegina reticulata mossanensis. It falls into the upper part of both the P 15 and NP 18 planktic zones. The Western Tethyan Eocene involute Heterostegina became extinct, apparently with no Oligocene successors.

Open antra, a special form of external brood pouches in Ordovician ostracodes suitable for both egg and brood care, are enabled by the associated pore system. Special kinds of radial pores connected with the adventral sculptures are described for the first time. Relationships exist between antral development and lifestyle in that open antra occur in nektobenthic taxa, while closed antra (false brood pouches) are connected with a benthic lifestyle. Taxa, particularly those with open antra, which are morphologically very similar in being non−lobate or non−sulcate, can be distinguished by the construction of the respective antra and the associated pore systems, as exemplified by Levisulculus, Swantina, and Ampletochitina.

Fossil remains of South American tapirs are often fragmentary and scarce compared with those of other mammals that entered South America during the “Great American Biotic Interchange”. Here, we review and add to the Pleistocene tapir remains from the Tarija Valley (Bolivia), and provide a taxonomic re-evaluation of Tapirus tarijensis. T. tarijensis was a large-sized animal, approximating the size of the living Malaysian T. indicus and the extinct North American T. haysii. The geographical distribution of Pleistocene records of Tapirus in South America indicates that T. tarijensis was the only known species inhabiting the Tarija Valley during this time.

We describe an additional fragmentary upper molar and the first lower molar known of Monotrematum sudamericanum, the oldest Cenozoic (Paleocene) monotreme. Comparisons suggest that the monotreme evolution passed through a stage in which their molars were “pseudo−triangulate”, without a true trigonid, and that the monotreme pseudo−triangulate pattern did not arise through rotation of the primary molar cusps. Monotreme lower molars lack a talonid, and consequently there is no basin with facets produced by the wearing action of a “protocone”; a cristid obliqua connecting the “talonid“ to the “trigonid” is also absent. We hypothesize that acquisition of the molar pattern seen in Steropodon galmani (Early Cretaceous, Albian) followed a process similar to that already postulated for docodonts (Docodon in Laurasia, Reigitherium in the South American sector of Gondwana) and, probably, in the gondwanathere Ferugliotherium.

A new genus and species of an amphicyonid from the Bose Basin of Guangxi, south China, is short−jawed with relatively bunodont cheek teeth that are characterized by reduction in cusp number. This taxon is the oldest record of an amphicyonid from south Asia and possibly for all of Asia. Despite its antiquity, it is derived in the development of brachygnathy and differs from other early amphicyonids that have shortened faces. Evidently brachygnathy was established in this species without loss of p1–2 or m2–3, which became single−rooted from a primitive double−rooted condition.

A low diversity association made up of the lingulid Tunisiglossa almalensis Popov and Mambetov, sp. nov. and the gastropod Ptychonema agyris Ebbestad, sp. nov. is described from the Upper Member of the Almaly Formation at Kyrgyz Range, North Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan. The specimens co−occur in dense coquinas, made up of different sized individuals, deposited in a shallow water, intertidal, and storm driven depositional environment. The lingulid shells display a completely reduced dorsal pseudointerarea typical of Glossellinae, and the smooth shell lacking fine external granulation, radial or pitted ornament, a small ventral pseudointerarea, and no dorsal median ridge place it in the hitherto monotypic Tunisiglossa known previously only from the Lower Ordovician (Tremadocian) Sanrhar Formation of Libya. It compares with Ectenoglossa sorbulakensis that is widespread in the lower to middle Caradocian Anderken Formation of Chu−Ili Range in southern Kazakhstan. Gastropods of this age have not been reported earlier in Kyrgyzstan; neither can Ptychonema be compare with any taxon in the gastropod association earlier described from the contemporary Anderken Formation in Kazakhstan. Ptychonema is otherwise commonly associated with peri−Gondwana terranes, but the Late Ordovician dispersal pattern of the genus is unknown. Overall, however, the Upper Ordovician faunas of North Tien Shan show close similarities to contemporaneous faunas of the Chu−Ili terrane, which have strong biogeographic signatures linking them to the faunas of South and North China.

Opis:
We describe a Cretaceous ?cimolodontan multituberculate p4 from South America, for which we erect the new genus and species Argentodites coloniensis. This new taxon is represented by an isolated ?left p4 from the Upper Cretaceous (?Campanian or Maastrichtian) La Colonia Formation of Patagonia (Fig. 1). It has a strongly convex anterior margin and prismatic enamel, which attest to its cimolodontan nature, while the previously known p4 (MACN−RN 975) from the Late Cretaceous Los Alamitos Formation is roughly rectangular, suggesting “plagiaulacidan” affinity. The presence of normal prismatic enamel in Argentodites suggests similarities to Ptilodontoidea. However, it differs from the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene Laurasian cimolodontans (including Ptilodontoidea) in having a long, straight posterior margin, a nearly straight dorsal margin, characteristic of some “Plagiaulacida”, and in having the lingual side close to the mirror image of the labial side, the character that poses difficulties in establishing whether it is a right or left tooth. Because of these differences we assign Argentodites to ?Cimolodonta, tentatively only, superfamily and family incertae sedis.
