Opis:
A single specimen of the axial skeleton of an elongate fossil stromateoid fish, collected from the Upper Miocene (Messinian) St. Eugène locality of north−western Algeria, is identified as a new species Ariomma geslini sp. nov. of the family Ariommatidae. It is based on a unique combination of features, including morphology and arrangement of pleural ribs, structure and orientation of anterior portion of the anal fin, unique sequential arrangement of anal−fin pterygiophores in relation to the haemal spines, and presence of large cycloid scales and meristics. The morphology and orientation of the first anal−fin pterygiophore indicate that A. geslini sp. nov. is probably related to the amphi−Atlantic species A. bondi and A. melanum. The analysis of the fossil record of the Stromateoidei suggests that the ariommatids were already in existence at least as early as the Eocene.

Opis:
Ammonites are of outstanding importance in dating events of the Mesozoic and in the study of mechanisms, modes and timing of evolutionary processes. These applications rely on a detailed understanding of their morphology and the modes of variation. It has been known for a long time that their shape is composed of a number of highly correlated features. A new model, called the ADA−model, is introduced for the study of shell morphology (size and shape). The new model is based on classic dimensions which are stable parameters throughout ontogeny, giving very close agreement between pre− dictions and actual observations. It was applied in the exploration of the morphospace occupied by the planispirally coiled and the regularly uncoiled Mesozoic Ammonoidea, based on two new reduced morphospaces introduced for the analysis. Results obtained expose close relationships between size and shape, and general patterns in the ammonite shell morphol− ogy and morphogenesis. (i) The relative apertural height of the whorl section relative to the diameter of the shell (H₂/D) is involved in definition of size and shape. (ii) This same dimension shows a strong tendency to be H₂/D = 0.3. (iii) There are some geometrically possible shell shapes (or morphotypes) which seem to have not been developed since they are not known in the current record. Assuming the known ranges of protoconch size and whorl number as constraints, the ADA−model strongly suggests that these morphotypes have not been developed for the too large or too small sizes the shells would have attained, well outside of the actual size range of the planispirally coiled Ammonoidea. (iv) The law of covariation is shown to be a general pattern within the planispiral ammonites which describes structured variation of the shell shape. (v) A large fraction of the non−structured variation seems originate in the lack of correlation between the rela− tive umbilical diameter and width of the whorl section.

A new specimen of Tupandactylus imperator, comprising an incomplete skull with associated lower jaw, is described. The material is the best preserved specimen of this species known so far and provides new information on the anatomy of this pterodactyloid pterosaur, especially with respect to the morphology of the lower jaw, the first one formally described for the species. Also, the new specimen shows an extensive preservation of soft tissues such as the soft−tissue component of the headcrest, ramphoteca associated with the premaxillae and lower jaw, as well as probable pycnofibres. A phylogenetic analysis was performed in order to test the relationships of the taxon within Tapejaridae. The results of the analysis support Tapejaridae, as well as monophyly of Tapejarinae and Thalassodrominae.

Opis:
Plesiosauria is a clade of medium to large bodied marine reptiles with a cosmopolitan distribution ranging from the latest Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous. In Europe, the fossil record of Plesiosauria is mainly known from the Northern latitudes, whereas it is much rarer from the Southern and Mediterranean areas. Here, we report the first articulated skeleton of an Italian plesiosaurian, from the Callovian–Oxfordian deposits of the Rosso Ammonitico Veronese Formation of Kaberlaba (Veneto). The specimen is referred to Pliosauridae based on the large size of the skull, compared to the appendicular skeleton, the presence of the lacrimal, and a distinct anterolateral projection of the prefrontal into the orbital margin. Mandibular and vertebral symplesiomorphies support the placement of the Italian taxon among the “gracile-longirostrine grade” of basal pliosaurids. The Kaberlaba plesiosaurian represents the second reptile clade recovered from the Rosso Ammonitico Veronese Formation, after Thalattosuchia.

Encrusting foraminiferans, although representing an important component of the so−called cryptic assemblages in both modern and ancient reef environments, are in general poorly described and little is known as regards their association with corals. In this paper, we describe coral−encrusting foraminiferan associations in the different facies that characterize the shallowing upward parasequences of the Nago Limestone (Upper Eocene, Trentino, northern Italy). From a relatively deep reef slope up to the shallow shelf−edge, corals have been recognized to be encrusted by different types of foraminiferan assemblages that differ on the basis of relative abundance of species, growth form and type of encrusted coral surface. The succession of encrusting foraminiferan assemblages is interpreted as controlled mainly by light, competition with coralline algae, hydrodynamic energy, and coral growth fabric.

The precise record of simoceratins sampled bed−by−bed is first reported from Mexico (Mazatepec area in Puebla, central−eastern Mexico), as well as the existence of lappeted peristomes in these ammonites. Both Pseudovolanoceras aesinense and the subspecies Pseudovolanoceras aesinense chignahuapense are shown to occur among Mexican simoceratins. The European species and the Mexican subspecies share the same stratigraphic range in the studied sections, yet they differ in ephebic sculpture. Ecological adaptation to neritic seas corresponding to eastern Mexico areas is interpreted, forcing phenotypic deviation with geographic significance, i.e., subspeciation. The new subspecies would indicate stratigraphic horizons within the Semiformiceras semiforme/Haploceras verruciferum Chronozone in the Mediterranean Tethys. A revision of contemporaneous simoceratins in the Americas is founded on a comparative analysis with respect to the European species P. aesinense.

The relationships of the genera currently included in Xyelotomidae are briefly discussed. The genera Undatoma, Liaotoma, Leridatoma, and Davidsmithia have the unique apomorphy in the wing venation of the Tenthredinoidea minus Xyelotomidae. The Xyelotomidae is probably a paraphyletic family. Only a phylogenetic analysis will help to solve these problems. There is no evidence supporting the previous assignments of the fossil genera Vitimilarva and Kuengilarva to the family Xyelotomidae.

Although the record of Paleozoic drillholes is long and extensive, evidence pertaining to the identity of the drillers is sparse. The most conclusive evidence, a driller “caught in the act”, has been documented only once (Baumiller 1990). In that example, a drillhole in the calyx of a crinoid was found directly beneath an attached platyceratid gastropod. Additional evidence for drilling by platyceratids has been circumstantial, i.e., based on the association of platyceratids with certain blastoids and crinoids, and the presence of drillholes in other crinoid and blastoid taxa. To a skeptic, the lack of congruence between drilled and platyceratidinfested crinoids and blastoids is not sufficient evidence that platyceratids were the drillers. More conclusive evidence requires examples of drillholes in taxa that are known to have been platyceratid−infested, preferably from localities where both infested specimens and drilled specimens co−occur.

Most of the heterocorals described up to now from strata older than Famennian are of doubtful affinities. Numerous specimens of the new genus and new species here described were collected during a sedimentological study of the Santa Lucía Formation in La Pola de Gordon (León province, Cantabrian Mountains, NW Spain). Stellaphyllia luciensis gen. et sp. nov. is characterized by cylindrical coralla, with a diameter of less than 2 mm and more than 2 cm long, having stellate to more or less rounded outer profile. Four to six septa, less frequently seven, are cojoined axially by a short oblique septum. The few tabulae present are steeply arched. The microstructure of the septa and interseptal elements shows thin elongate microlamellae parallel to a median plate which is granular in appearance. The new genus dated to the lower Eifelian age could be important in understanding the early phylogeny and origin of the order Heterocorallia.

The Unenlagiinae is a clade of Gondwanan dromaeosaurid theropods mainly known from incomplete skeletal material. The group includes two recently discovered theropods, Buitreraptor and Austroraptor, from which cranial remains are available with in situ maxillary and dentary teeth, thus allowing the study of tooth morphology. Among the derived traits that diagnose the dentition of unenlagiines are: (i) high tooth count, (ii) small size of individual teeth when compared with skull height, (iii) absence of denticles and carinae, and (iv) presence of longitudinal grooves on the tooth crown. This suite of dental characteristics, shared between Buitreraptor and Austroraptor, can be considered as diagnostic of the Unenlagiinae or, at least, a more exclusive clade within the group. The teeth of Buitreraptor exhibit a remarkable labiolingual compression, whereas Austroraptor possesses more conical teeth, probably respective autapomorphic features. On one hand, these dental morphologies differ from those observed in most Laurasian dromaeosaurids and, for instance, could be considered as further proof of the purported vicariant evolution of the lineage on the southern continents. On the other hand, the morphological similarities (e.g., absence of denticles) between the teeth of unenlagiines and other theropod lineages, including Mesozoic birds and ornithomimosaurs, can be considered as the result of parallel trends related to dental reduction.

Opis:
Oceanic dolphins (Odontoceti: Delphinidae) constitute the most speciose family of extant cetaceans, yet their fossil record is limited. Although several extinct species are known from Mediterranean and North Atlantic localities, there are few examples from deposits along the Pacific Rim. Despite the rich record of successive marine mammal fossil assemblages in the extensively sampled eastern North Pacific, only one fossil delphinid, Protoglobicephala (Pliocene, Baja California), has been described. We report globicephaline remains from the Mio-Pliocene Purisima Formation of Northern California, including a partial cranium and two isolated petrosals. The skull exhibits large ridges on the premaxillae, and cannot be referred to any extant globicephaline genus. Similarly, the petrosals cannot be referred to any described delphinid genus, although they are most similar to those of Globicephala. Linear regression analyses demonstrate that promontorium length and bony nares width scale significantly within delphinidans, and provide a new method for testing referrals of isolated fossil odontocete petrosals to taxa known only by crania. Applying this method to the new globicephalines from the Purisima Formation, we find the petrosals to be too small to represent the same taxon as the skull, thus indicating the presence of two separate species. Our results demonstrate that globicephalines had achieved a worldwide distribution by the early Pliocene, suggesting diversification of the subfamily by 5 Ma.

Herein, a new genus and species of Paleogene termites is described and figured from the Late Oligocene (28–27 Ma, Early Chattian) of northwestern Ethiopia (Amhara Region, Chilga Woreda). Chilgatermes diamatensis gen. et sp. nov., is most similar to genera of the Stolotermitidae, Archotermopsidae, and Termopsidae but can be distinguished on the basis of forewing venational details. The genus is tentatively placed in the Stolotermitidae: Porotermitinae. Chilgatermes diamatensis is the first fossil termite from Ethiopia and, indeed, the first from the entire African continent.

Postcranial skeletal pneumaticity (PSP) is present in a range of basal sauropodomorphs spanning the basal sauropodomorph–sauropod transition. We describe the PSP of five taxa, Plateosaurus engelhardti, Eucnemesaurus fortis, Aardonyx celestae, Antetonitrus ingenipes, and an unnamed basal sauropod from Spion Kop, South Africa (hereafter referred to as the Spion Kop sauropod). The PSP of Plateosaurus is apparently sporadic in its occurrence and has only been observed in very few specimens, in which it is of very limited extent, affecting only the posterior cervical vertebrae and possibly the mid dorsals in one specimen. The PSP of Eucnemesaurus, Aardonyx, Antetonitrus, and the Spion Kop sauropod consists of subfossae (fossa−within−fossa structures) that excavate the vertices of the posterior infradiapophyseal fossae of the posterior dorsal vertebrae. These subfossae range from simple shallow depressions (Eucnemesaurus) to deep, steepsided, internally subdivided and asymmetrically developed chambers (Antetonitrus). The middle and anterior dorsal vertebrae of these taxa lack PSP, demonstrating that abdominal air sacs were the source of the invasive diverticula. The presence of pneumatic features within the infradiapophyseal fossae suggest that the homologous fossae of more basal saurischians and dinosauriforms were receptacles that housed pneumatic diverticula. We suggest that it is probable that rigid non−compliant lungs ventilated by compliant posterior air sacs evolved prior to the origination of Dinosauria.
