Polyglyphanodon sternbergi Gilmore, 1940 is a large−bodied lizard from the Late Cretaceous of North America distinguished by its transversely oriented, interlocking teeth. Initially the teeth of P. sternbergi were described as smooth and blade−like, but recent discoveries of new specimens from the type locality and re−examination of the original material indicate that the chisel−like teeth of P. sternbergi have small, irregular serrations along the blades. These serrations are similar in size to those found on the teeth of the modern herbivorous lizard Iguana iguana and were likely used in a similar manner to crop vegetation, but was also capable of a degree of oral food processing due to the transverse orientation and interlocking arrangement of the dentition of P. sternbergi. Additionally, the presence of transversely oriented teeth with V−shaped blades in the anterior portion of the tooth row of P. sternbergi represents an additional shared characteristic in tooth structure between P. sternbergi and Dicothodon moorensis, Bicuspidon numerosus, and Peneteius aquilonoius; all transversely−tooth polyglyphandontine lizards from the Cretaceous of North America. It appears that the unique dentitions of Polyglyphanodon sternbergi (large teeth with transverse, serrated blades) and Peneteius aquilonius (small teeth with mammal−like specializations) present by the end of the Cretaceous were derived from a bicuspid, transversely oriented precursor tooth with a V−shaped blade.

Cardinal process is a structure on dorsal valve of brachiopods serving for separation or attachment of diductor muscles. A cardinal process with a peculiar folded myophore is described from Late Ordovician “Orthis” kukersiana−group brachiopods assigned to the genus Cyrtonotella (order Orthida). This structure differs from those of other rhynchonelliformean brachiopods and can be considered as a separate type among about twenty varieties of processes described up to now.

Two species of chinchillid rodents, Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) incisus and “Lagostomus (Lagostomopsis) spicatus”, have been recorded from the Monte Hermoso Formation (Montehermosan–Lower Chapadmalalan, Early Pliocene) of southern Buenos Aires Province, eastern Argentina. L. (L.) incisus is based on skull remains,while “L. (L.) spicatus” is based onmandible remains and fragmentary skulls. Detailed study of specimens recovered from the upper section of the Monte Hermoso Formation, from the Irene “Formation”, and the Chapadmalal Formation (late Early–early Late Pliocene, Buenos Aires Province), some of them represented by associated skull and mandible remains, indicates that L. (L.) incisus and “L. (L.) spicatus” are synonymous, with the valid name being L. (L.) incisus. The differences between both nominal species are here attributed to different ontogenetic states and sexual dimorphism. The stratigraphic provenance of the fossil material of L. (L.) incisus indicates a temporal distribution of this species restricted to theMontehermosan?–Chapadmalalan (Early–early Late Pliocene), instead of the Montehermosan (Early Pliocene).

The shell of the coleoid cephalopod mollusc Kostromateuthis roemeri gen. et sp. n. from the lower Kimmeridgian of Central Russia consists of the slowly expanding orthoconic phragmocone and aragonitic sheath with a rugged surface, a weakly developed post-alveolar part and a long, strong, probably dorsal groove. The sheath lacks concentric structure common for belemnoid rostra. It is formed by spherulites consisting of the needle-like crystallites, and is characterized by strong porosity and high content of originally organic matter. Each spherulite has a porous central part, a solid periphery and an organic cover. Tubular structures with a wall formed by the needle-like crystallites are present in the sheath. For comparison the shell ultrastructure in Recent Spirula and Sepia, as well as in the Eocene Belemnosis were studied with SEM. Based on gross morphology and sheath ultrastructure K. roemeri is tentatively assigned to Spirulida and a monotypic family Kostromateuthidae nov. is erected for it. The Mesozoic evolution of spirulids is discussed.

Hypolagus beremendensis, a representative of the Archaeolaginae, was one of the most abundant and widespread leporids in the Plio−Pleistocene of Europe. The vast accumulations of skeletal remains from the Polish Pliocene sites (Węże 1, Rębielice Królewskie 1 and 2, and Kadzielnia 1) yielded thousands of bones representing almost all skeletal regions. The detailed hind limb morphology of Hypolagus beremendensisis presented in comparison with five extant leporids (Lepus europaeus, Oryctolagus cuniculus, Pentalagus furnessi, Sylvilagus floridanus, and S. brasiliensis), which represent a wide range of locomotor adaptations. The UPGMA analysis of 98 metric characters places Hypolagus beremendensis next to the leporine rabbits. Hypolagus beremendensis has the os coxae, femur, and talus most similar to P. furnessi, tibia and calcaneus to the leporine rabbits, and the structure of foot to Lepus. The elongation of the foot and tibiofibular segment in relation to the femur indicates an advanced cursorial adaptation and a relatively steep jump. The similarities in the proximal segments (os coxae and femur) between Hypolagus and Pentalagus highlight the conservative morphology of this region in the Leporidae.

The primitive number of premolars for most eutherian groups is four. A growing number of Cretaceous taxa, however, had five. Regardless of the hypothesis used to explain the discrepancy, or what the primitive condition was, it is generally agreed that the middle (third) tooth of five-premolared taxa is the one not represented in mammals that have only four premolars. Hence the current practice of labeling the teeth as the first through fifth and the first through fourth, depending on how many teeth are observed in the jaw, results in incorrect implied homologies for the last two premolars of the series. Given the long-standing tradition of referring to the premolars as the first through fourth, for most eutherian groups, together with the uncertainties involved in interpreting the difference, the most practical solution is to refer to the disputed tooth by a neutral term, 'Px', as advocated several decades ago.

Exceptionally well−preserved embryonic skulls of Upper Cretaceous (Campanian Anacleto Formation) sauropods from Auca Mahuevo (Neuquén Province, Argentina) provide important insights into the ontogeny and evolution of titanosaurian neosauropods. The most important cranial modifications occurring during titanosaurian ontogeny appear to be centered on the infraorbital and narial regions, which exhibit a substantial degree of “mosaic” evolution. On one hand, the Auca Mahuevo embryos show a large jugal that forms part of the lower margin of the skull and unretracted external nares, as indicated by the position and orientation of the lacrimals as well as the anterior extension of the frontals. Both of these features are ancestral for neosauropods, being present in prosauropods. On the other hand, the embryonic skull exhibits a large ventral notch, tentatively interpreted as homologous to the neosauropod preantorbital fenestra, that opens ventral to the jugal and between the maxilla and the quadratojugal, and a temporal region that closely resembles the adult neosauropod condition. This mosaic of character states indicates that different regions of the skull of titanosaurian neosauropods acquired their characteristic morphology at substantially different rates during their ontogenetic development.

Two fossil tadpoles collected in the Deseadan levels (Oligocene) at the Scarritt Pocket locality of central Patagonia are studied herein. These specimens, which show different degrees of skeletal development, have been assigned to the neobatrachian Calyptocephalella canqueli based on the morphology of the frontoparietals and the presence of adult specimens of this fossil species at the same locality. The concurrent analysis of three developmental stages (Gosner Stages 35/36 and 38/39, and adult) has provided significant data about the ontogeny of this species, including the change of the pattern of exostosis of the frontoparietals, from a pitted to a tuberculated pattern, and the corroboration of the inclusion of two neural arches in the formation of the urostyle. This evidence will shed light on developmental mechanisms that might be involved in the evolution of the genus Callyptocephalella.

New ammonites collected bed−by−bed from the upper part of Ataxioceras hypselocyclum Chronozone deposits in the eastern Iberian Chain are described as Geyericeras gen. nov. The new genus includes microand macroconchiate Ataxioceratinae of small size, with moderate to loose coiling and subpolyplocoid ribs, a character crucial for its identification. Key points for the comparative identification of Geyericeras gen. nov. are: (i) microconchiate Geyericerasshow morphological convergence with evolute specimens of the stratigraphically older genus Schneidia [m]; (ii) contemporary Ataxioceratinae genera such as Ardescia [m, M] and Lithacosphinctes [m, M] did not develop subpolyplocoid ribbing; (iii) smoothing of sculpture combined with short primary ribs are not realized in Geyericeras gen. nov. [M] and can be therefore used to separate the new genus from Ataxioceras[M]; and (iv) smaller shells, and weaker and less dense ribbing with no parabolic structures differentiate Geyericeras gen. nov. [m, M] from Parataxioceras[m, M], as well as the type of subpolyplocoid ribs seen among microconchiate specimens of these two genera. The new species Geyericeras aragoniense sp. nov. is the index and guide fossil for identification of a biohorizon occurring below the first occurrence of the genus Crussoliceras in the eastern Iberian Chain.

The dinosaur record of the Salitral Moreno locality (Río Negro Province, Argentina) is characterized by a high diversity of herbivore taxa, among them hadrosaurs, ankylosaurs, and titanosaur sauropods, but carnivores are rare, consisting of only a few fragmentary bones of small forms. Titanosaurs are represented by Rocasaurus muniozi and Aeolosaurus sp., and at least four other taxa, represented by fragmentary material. The elements preserved include a cervical, dorsal and caudal vertebrae, chevron, humerii, ulnae, radii, metacarpal, femora, tibiae, metatarsal, ischia, pubis, and ilium. The Allen Formation is thought to be correlated with the Marília Formation in Brazil, and their faunas have certain elements in common such as aeolosaurines, but saltasaurines and hadrosaurs, are known exclusively from the Allen Formation. These absences, and particularly that of the saltasaurines, may be because those sauropods originated late in the Cretaceous, probably in southern South America (Northern Patagonia?), and they did not have time to disperse to northern South America.

Cenozoic deep−water sediments of the Lincoln Creek, Makah, and Pysht formations in western Washington State, USA, contain sunken driftwood and whale bones that were colonized by invertebrates which largely depend on this type of transient habitat. These fossil woodand whale−fall faunules yielded six new mollusk species that appear to have been endemic to these biogenic microhabitats, except for one species which also occurs in cold−seep limestones. The new gastropod species are the neomphalid Leptogyra squiresi, the buccinid Colus sekiuensis, the allogastropod Xylodiscula okutanii, and the new bivalve species are the protobranch “Nuculana” posterolaevia, the mytilid Idas? olympicus, and the heterodont Thyasira xylodia.

Protanastrophia repanda gen. et sp. nov. is a reef−dwelling parastrophinid brachiopod in the Lower Silurian (uppermost Telychian) Attawapiskat Formation of the Hudson Bay region of Canada. It is characterized by a small, quasi−smooth shell with gentle anterior costae, a tendency towards an asymmetrical, sigmoidal anterior commissure, and widely separate, subparallel inner hinge plates. Protanastrophia first appeared in the marginal seas of Siberia (Altai, Mongolia) during the Late Ordovician, retaining the primitive character of discrete inner hinge plates in the superfamily Camerelloidea, and preferred a carbonate mound depositional environment. It survived the Late Ordovician mass extinction and subsequently spread to Baltica and Laurentia during Early Silurian (Llandovery) time. Superficially similar asymmetrical shells of Parastrophina portentosa occur in the Upper Ordovician carbonate mound facies of Kazakhstan but differ internally from the new genus in having a septum−supported septalium. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that, within the Camerelloidea, asymmetrical shells with a sigmoidal anterior commissure evolved in Protanastrophia repanda and Parastrophina portentosa independently during the Late Ordovician as a case of homoplasy. The two species belong to separate parastrophinid lineages that evolved in widely separate palaeogeographic regions.
