Removal of mercury(II) (Hg(II)) from aqueous media by a new biosorbent was carried out. Natural Polyporus squamosus fungus, which according to the literature has not been used for the purpose of Hg(II) biosorption before, was utilized as a low-cost biosorbent, and the biosorption conditions were analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM). Medium parameters which were expected to affect the biosorption of Hg(II) were determined to be initial pH, initial Hg(II) concentration (Co), temperature (T (°C)), and contact time (min). All experiments were carried out in a batch system using 250 mL flasks containing 100 mL solution with a magnetic stirrer. The Hg(II) concentrations remaining in filtration solutions after biosorption were analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). Based on the RSM results, the optimal conditions were found to be 5.30, 47.39 mg/L, 20°C and 254.9 min for pH, Co, T (°C), and contact time, respectively. Under these optimal conditions, the maximum biosorbed amount and the biosorption yield were calculated to be 3.54 mg/g and 35.37%, respectively. This result was confirmed by experiments. This result shows that Polyporus squamosus has a specific affinity for Hg ions. Under optimal conditions, by increasing the amount of Polyporus squamosus used, it can be concluded that all Hg ions will be removed.

This study aims to leach copper from chalcopyrite and optimizing the leaching process, using the response surface methodology (RSM). The RSM, a D-optimal design with four factors in three levels was employed to evaluate the effect of particle size, temperature, silver-coated pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio and redox potential parameters on the copper extraction efficiency. A quadratic model was then proposed by the RSM to correlate leaching variables. The tests results indicated that the model was significant with the experimental data at a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.96. The most important parameters of copper extraction efficiency were particle size and silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio, and also the squared term of particle size (A2), temperature (B2) and redox potential (D2). In addition, the interaction between redox potential and silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio (CD) was significant. It was shown that the finer the particle size the faster the leaching rate of copper. It was also indicated that by increasing silver-coated pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio of 6:1 copper recovery increased. The maximum recovery of copper (71%) was obtained for the particle size of -38 μm, 70 °C, 420 mV of redox potential, silver-coated pyrite-to-chalcopyrite ratio of 6 and leaching time of 8 hours.

Background. A research was conducted on the ultrasonic pretreatment of chicken droppings for biogas production. The hydrolysis step in anaerobic digestion is rate-limiting and time-consuming due to the presence of complex molecules in the organic wastes. Pretreatment encourages faster digestion and yields improvement by making the organic waste ready for microbial attack. Material and methods. To achieve the optimum sonication time and slurry ratio for maximum biogas production, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used in this study. 13 experimental runs were developed according to Central Composite Design with different setup conditions and five replicates at center points to observe the Response, i.e., volumes of biogas produced. This was achieved with the aid of a software package (Design Expert 12.0.1.0). A quadratic model was developed for the responses and a 3D response surface plot was obtained to analyze the effect of the variables and their interactions to determine their optimum levels. Results. The numerical optimization and point prediction result gave a sonication time of 18.6 minutes and a slurry ratio of 2.0 (i.e., 2.0 : 1.0). Under this condition, the predicted maximum volume of biogas production is 24.514 ml in 12 days. This prediction was tested and validated, and the volume of biogas produced under the same conditions was 22.282 ml. This confirmed the adequacy of the predicted model as only a 10.02% error was recorded. Conclusions. Henceforth, the optimum sonication time and slurry ratio were achieved for maximum biogas production from chicken droppings.

The zinc leaching from sphalerite concentrate using oxygen under pressure in sulfuric acid solution was primarily studied and evaluated. The effects of important leaching parameters such as oxygen partial pressure, temperature, solid/liquid ratio and leaching time on leaching efficiency, Zn concentration and Fe extraction were investigated. Response surface methodology based on central composite rotatable design technique was used to optimize the leaching process parameters in order to obtain a suitable leach solution with high Zn leaching efficiency considering further processes such as precipitation of contaminating metal ions and electrolysis. The optimum leaching condition for maximum Zn leaching efficiency and Zn concentration with minimum Fe extraction was determined as follows: oxygen partial pressure of 12 bars, temperature of 150 °C, solid/liquid ratio of 0.20 and leaching time of 89.16 minutes. The achieved experimental results for Zn leaching efficiency, Zn concentration and Fe extraction under the optimum conditions were as 94%, 80 g/dm3 and 8.1% respectively. The experimental results corresponded well with the predicted results of quadratic polynomial models.

Opis:
Calcite depression is the most effective physicochemical process to valorize fluorine mineral. This process is achieved by adsorption of tannic acid, as the commonly used reagent, onto calcite. Adsorption investigation is very important in mineral processing. The present work focuses on optimization of physicochemical parameters of tannic acid adsorption onto calcite. Experimental study is carried out by a response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design. Obtained results are exploited to develop a statistical model. Analysis of variance and residuals are performed to check the significance of tested models. Among these models, Cox-Box model predicts very well the obtained experimental data. This model shows that initial tannic acid concentration and solution pH as well as their interactions are the most significant parameters. Optimal conditions are achieved using the obtained statistical model. The present investigation is an important preliminary step to better understand calcite flotation behavior using tannic acid as a depressant.

Opis:
In the present study, jamun seed waste has been explored for the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution. The multi-variant sorption optimization was achieved by the factorial design approach. 99.91% of Pb(II) ions was removed from aqueous solution. The results predicted by the model were in good agreement with the experimental results (the values of R2 and R2 adj. were found to be 99.89% and 99.95%, respectively). Langmuir and D-R isotherm studies were carried out to fi nd adsorbent's capacities (183.9 š 0.31 mg/g and 184.5 š 0.16 mg/g respectively), sorption free energy 13.17 š 0.16 and RL values in the range of 0.05-0.77, suggested the favorable chemical and/or ion exchange nature of the sorption process. The FT-IR study was carried out for unloaded and Pb(II) ions loaded jamun seed, indicated, Pb(II) ions associated with nitrogen and oxygen of jamun seed containing moieties during the adsorption process. The proposed method was successfully validated and applied for the treatment of Pb(II) ions contaminating drinking water.

This study aims to optimize the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) in pump water from fish flour factories through electrocoagulation technology and to determine the effects of the main operation parameters. Pump water has high conductivity (40.1 mS), due to the presence of dissolved salts and contains high concentration of organic substances (12,360 mg/L of TSS and 520 mg/L of fats). In this study, pump water was treated in an electrocoagulation reactor with aluminum electrodes using Response Surface Methodology with a 3k factorial design based on two factors, current intensity (I) of 8-13 A and treatment time (t) of 20-40 minutes. The percentage of TSS removed from the water was used as the response variable. The results revealed that I and t significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the process. In accordance, the optimal operational parameters for TSS removal were I = 13 A and t = 30 minutes. Using these conditions, TSS removal efficiency of 99.9% was achieved. The sewage sludge generated with these optimal process conditions indicated 19.3% of ash content, 6.2% of salt, 1.7% of aluminum, 0.3% of iron, 0.4% of potassium, 256 ppm of zinc, and 2.1% of phosphorus. Hence, the results of this study affirm that electrocoagulation can be considered as a solution for marine pollution caused by fishing industries.

An experimental investigation is carried out to examine the effects of various cutting parameters on the response criteria when turning EN-AW-1350 aluminum alloy under dry cutting conditions. The experiments related to the analysis of the influence of turning parameters on the surface roughness (Ra) and material removal rate (MRR) were carried out according to the Taguchi L27 orthogonal array (313) approach. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to characterizing the main elements affecting response parameters. Finally, the desirability function (DP) was applied for a bi-objective optimization of the machining parameters with the objective of achieving a better surface finish (Ra) and a higher productivity (MRR). The results showed that the cutting speed is the most dominant factor affecting Ra followed by the feed rate and the depth of cut. Moreover, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach is found to be more reliable and accurate than its Response Surface methodology (RSM) counterpart in terms of predicting and detecting the non-linearity of the surface roughness and material removal rate mathematical models. ANN provided prediction models with a precision benefit of 8.21% more than those determined by RSM. The latter is easier to use, and provides more information than ANN in terms of the impacts and contributions of the model terms.

Novel Calix[4]arene Netwok (NCN) resin has been synthesized using Amberlite XAD-2 as the starting material. Hydroxyl groups have been introduced onto the para position of alkylated phenyl ring of Amberlite XAD-2 followed by the condensation to NCN by reacting it with formaldehyde. The NCN resin has been used for the remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated water using factorial design approach. A face-centered Draper-Lin composite design predicted ~100% removal effi ciency at optimum variables (the initial concentration of Cr(VI) ion 10 mg/l sorbent dose 200 mg, agitation time 136 min and pH 2). The accuracy and the fi tting of the model were evaluated by ANOVA and R2 (0.9992) values. The 99.5% removal effi ciency has been achieved experimentally at the optimum values of the variables. The Langmuir and D-R isotherm models were applicable to the sorption data with the value of RL and the sorption free energy 0.0057-0.1 and 7.93 kJ/mol respectively, suggesting favorable and physical/ion-exchange nature of the sorption. The calculated sorption capacity was 176.1š2.4 mg/g. The recycling studies of NCN resin showed that the multiple use of resin is feasible. Effect of concomitants has also been studies and proposed method was applied successfully for removal (98.7%) of Cr (VI) from electroplating wastewater.

This study aims to explore the efficiency of an agro waste material for the remediation of Pb(II) contaminated water. A factorial design approach is adopted to optimize removal efficiency and to study the interaction between effective variables. A face-centered Draper-Lin composite design predicted 100% removal efficiency at optimum variables; pH 8, initial concentration of Pb(II) ion 12mg/L, sorbent dose 200mg and agitation time 110 min. Regration coefficient (R2 = 99.9%) of a plot of the predicted versus the observed values and p value (>0.05) confirms the applicability of the predicted model. Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were applicable to sorption data with the Langmuir sorption capacity of 21.61š0.78 mg/g. The energy of sorption was found to be 13.62š0.32 kJ/mol expected for ion-exchange or chemisorption nature of sorption process. Characterization of Grewia seed suggested a possible contribution of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the process of biosorption. The present study shows that Grewia seeds can be used effectively for the remediation of Pb(II) contaminated water.
