Opis:
We present a brief survey of the nonsmooth maximum principle of optimal control, focusing, in particular, upon the alternative forms of the adjoint equation. We obtain a new version of the theorem that asserts for the first time the full Weierstrass condition together with the Euler form of the adjoint equation, thereby extending a result of de Pinho and Vinter. The new theorem also features stratified hypotheses and conclusions. Two examples illustrate its use.

An algorithm for optimal control of a gas network with any configuration based upon hierarchical control and decomposition of the network is described. Local problems are solved using a gradient technique. The subsystems are coordinated using „good coordination” method to find the overall optimum. Discrete state equation for the case in which output pressures are treated as elements of the control vector has been formulated. Results of investigations are included.

Opis:
In a series of the recent papers of the author, it was shown that the solutions and Lagrange multipliers of state-constrained optimal control problems are locally Lipschitz continuous and directionally differentiable functions of the parameter, under usual constraint qualifications and weakened second order conditions. In this paper, it is shown that those conditions are not only sufficient, but also necessary. Thus, they consitute a characterization of Lipschitz stability and sensitivity properties for state-constrained optimal control problems.

We discuss the evolution of the Pontryagin maximum principle, focusing primarily on the hypotheses required for its validity. We proceed to describe briefly a unifying result giving rise to both classical and new versions, a recent theorem of the author giving necessary conditions for optimal control problems formulated in terms of differential inclusions. We conclude with a new application of this result for the case in which mixed constraints on the state and control are imposed in terms of equalities, inequalities, and unilateral set constraints. In order to lighten the exposition, the discussion is limited to differentiable data, thereby avoiding mention of generalized gradients or normal cones, except, in the technical section on differential inclusions.

Opis:
In this paper, control-oriented modeling approaches are presented for distributed parameter systems. These systems, which are in the focus of this contribution, are assumed to be described by suitable partial differential equations. They arise naturally during the modeling of dynamic heat transfer processes. The presented approaches aim at developing finite-dimensional system descriptions for the design of various open-loop, closed-loop, and optimal control strategies as well as state, disturbance, and parameter estimation techniques. Here, the modeling is based on the method of integrodifferential relations, which can be employed to determine accurate, finite-dimensional sets of state equations by using projection techniques. These lead to a finite element representation of the distributed parameter system. Where applicable, these finite element models are combined with finite volume representations to describe storage variables that are—with good accuracy—homogeneous over sufficiently large space domains. The advantage of this combination is keeping the computational complexity as low as possible. Under these prerequisites, real-time applicable control algorithms are derived and validated via simulation and experiment for a laboratory-scale heat transfer system at the Chair of Mechatronics at the University of Rostock. This benchmark system consists of a metallic rod that is equipped with a finite number of Peltier elements which are used either as distributed control inputs, allowing active cooling and heating, or as spatially distributed disturbance inputs.

Opis:
This paper studies a Mayer type optimal control problem with general endpoint constraints for semilinear unbounded evolution inclusions in reflexive and separable Banach spaces. First, we construct a sequence of discrete approximations to the original optimal control problem for evolution inclusions and prove that optimal solutions to discrete approximation problems uniformly converge to a given optimal solution for the original continuous-time problem. Then, based on advanced tools of generalized differentiation, we derive necessary optimality conditions for discrete-time problems under fairly general assumptions. Combining these results with recent achievements of variational analysis in infinite-dimensional spaces, we establish new necessary optimality conditions for constrained continuous-time evolution inclusions by passing to the limit from discrete approximations.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to the study of a general class of optimal control problems described by delay-differential inclusions with infinite-dimensional state spaces, endpoints constraints, and multivalued initial conditions. To the best of our knowledge, problems of this type have not been considered in the literature, except for some particular cases when either the state space is finite-dimensional or there is no delay in the dynamics. We develop the method of discrete approximations to derive necessary optimality conditions in the extended Euler-Lagrange form by using advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation in infinite dimensions. This method consists of the three major parts: (a) constructing a well-posed sequence of discrete-time problems that approximate in an appropriate sense the original continuous-time problem of dynamic optimization; (b) deriving necessary optimality conditions for the approximating discrete-time problems by reducing them to infinite-dimensional problems of mathematical programming and employing then generalized differential calculus; (c) passing finally to the limit in the obtained results for discrete approximations to establish necessary conditions for the given optimal solutions to the original problem. This method is fully realized in the delay-differential systems under consideration.
