Opis:
This article concerns the dimensions of old age in the perception of children and adolescents. The inspiration for its creation was the analysis of explorations of the perception of old age and old people in society, especially in perception of children and adolescents. This issue is a significant problem because analyzes and reports on the subject, emphasize that the least favorable attitudes towards the elderly manifests indicated young generation. Children and adolescents usually speak out not very friendly about old age and the old people and build their opinions on the basis of generally negative stereotype of old age and the old people in the society. Hence, it is interesting to present dimensions of old age formed by the younger generation because they become important for establishing and building intergenerational contacts and relationships. Repeatedly these dimensions which are relying on the little benevolent and not always accurate information prevent mutual and shared communion of both generations. Awareness of their specificity is important to take action aimed at the direction of formation of relevant attitudes toward the old man and old age.

Year 2012 was declared the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. The eyes of Europe have been directed on an important issue of the problems of the elderly. Old age, which is naturally inscribed in human development, should be filled with satisfaction and joy, is often a phase of loneliness. Loneliness is very difficult for people in old age. Its social, emotional and axionormative dimension may be highlighted. In this work, I emphasize the need to become interested in the elderly, for whom appropriate prevention and intervention strategies should be prepared.

Opis:
Introduction. Influenza has been known as the most common contagious disease attacking the respiratory system of patients at any age. In addition to influenza vaccination, older people are also advised to vaccinate against pneumonia, hepatitis (Hepatitis B), pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus. The aim of this work is to present the importance of influenza vaccination and senior participation in the "Program for the prevention of contagious diseases with respect to the use of influenza vaccination for people over 65", on the example of Włocławek, Lublin and Wrocław. Overview. Contagious diseases in older people are often characterized by a severe course and an increased risk of complications. Despite the wide-scale infection prevention among the older people, protective vaccinations are the most effective way to prevent influenza, as well as its complications. The number of vaccinated patients over 65 is low. The use of protective vaccinations has a beneficial effect not only on the health of patients, but also on the reduction of treatment costs associated with the occurrence of possible post-influenza complications and long-term hospitalization. Systematic influenza vaccinations are liekely to protect patients from infection and complications, but also stimulate the body's immune system to function properly. Conclusions. Despite the recommendations of health professionals , the popularity of vaccinations among people over 65 is very low. The most common reasons associated with resignation from vaccinations among seniors include: fear of complications associated with vaccination and lack of faith in its effectiveness. For this reason, it is extremely important to effectively promote influenza vaccinations among the elderly.

In each epoch, one can distinct a different attitude of man towards transience, ageing and death, manifested in different mindsets and ideas about what is inevitable. The purpose of this article is to justify the thesis that since the earliest times, the discourse on late adulthood oscillates between a specifically understood “crisis and the renaissance of old age”. The main thesis is based on the premise that the characteristic feature of old age is the ambivalence, due to which, from prehistoric to modern times, it eludes full cognition. To verify the hypotheses, conclusions of own research carried out for the doctoral dissertation and conclusions from the analysis of the literature of the subject were used. In this article, the author looks at the duality of attitudes towards ageing and old age from prehistoric to modern times. The most comprehensive part of the article refers to the position of the elderly in prehistoric and ancient times. On the one hand, this overview has highlighted the fact that many of the old attitudes and perceptions of old age built over the years have survived to the present day, but, on the other hand, to verify the common belief that in ancient times, in contrast to modern times, the older person was respected and appreciated. The hypotheses contained in this article are not in the nature of decisive judgments, some of them require further in-depth research, but they are a kind of encouragement and an invitation to think together about the phenomenon of old age.

This article is devoted to the reflections on the specific nature of old age derived from the author’s inspirations with the categories found in the works by Zygmunt Bauman, Tadeusz Sławek and Krzysztof Maliszewski. Those are reflections on the phenomenon of ageing which is anchored in the post-modern culture. The author suggests that old age should be perceived not only as a social and demographic phenomenon occurring on the socio-cultural, economic, political or historical ground, but also as personal experience, an individual project, time in life experienced as a period without coercion but with the right to live one’s own way, in one’s own rhythm and on one’s own.

The article attempts at determining the most important factors shaping the social situation of aged people in Poland in the period 1945–89, seeking to describe, in vast amounts of detail, the demographic diversity (size of population concerned, gender categorisation, numerical amounts by age), residence (urban or rural region) as well as living conditions, health, and education status of the population concerned. Research has shown that the social security system in force played an increasing role in the shaping of the material situation of the elderly: in 1989 some 50 per cent retirement-aged people took advantage of its offer. That this system remained the basis for livelihoods of a definite majority of aged people in the 1980s primarily ensued from the extension of the farmer’s retirement and disability pension system. Nonetheless, a considerable group of elderly people (amounting to several dozen per cent, though estimates vary) received income below the minimum subsistence figure until the end of 1989 – thus remaining condemned to poverty and the need to seek for other, extra sources of income, such as assistance from family or acquaintances, gainful labour, and/or social protection.

Among many demographic changes, one of the most evident now is the aging of the population, the consequences of which are increasingly leaving a mark on the directions of social policy. In connection with the aging of the population and positive aspects, manifestations of ageism, based on stereotypes and negative attitudes toward older people, are also more and more noticeable. Sometimes, these are discriminatory practices against older people encountered in the health sector, the labor market, public offices, and others. The research presented in the article aimed to identify age discrimination and its manifestations among older people. The purposive sampling technique was used to choose the research sample – the assumption was to examine active older people related to a large city who get involved and participate in various activities and projects carried out for them by nongovernmental organizations. The method of a diagnostic survey with a questionnaire, which included both closed and open-ended questions, was used in the research. The research was intended to help answer the following questions: do older people notice age discrimination, and have they experienced worse treatment because of their age? How many of the surveyed seniors experienced worse treatment and what forms (most often) did it take, and where did it happen?

Opis:
The adverse consequences of an aging society for the stability of health care financing systems are superimposed on the natural inequality of the distribution of health needs, and consequently, expenditure for health services in the life cycle of man. How long, under such conditions, will financial security systems based on the mechanism of PAYG (pay as you go) be able to guarantee all of its citizens, including the oldest ones, broad access to medical care? The debate brought about by D. Callahan in 1987 on “age-based rationing of benefits” for many years focused on trying to find ethical and economic rationale for limiting the scope of benefits guaranteed to the oldest citizens (eg A. illimas, F. Breyer, D. Brock, N. Daniels, P. Dabrock). Age-based benefit rationing from public funds, however, may soon become a reality if we do not manage to break ties, within the public system, with the idea of full socialization of the costs of old age at the expense of future generations. Maintaining fundamental fairness towards the future generations requires an equal sharing of the financial consequences of aging, and this means taking on more responsibility of every individual for himself. A good practice of substitute private health insurance in Germany is the mandatory creation of individual financial reserves for old age which allows avoiding an excessive rise of equivalent risk premium in old age. Another solution for social health insurance might be reserves built by each generation, or a general public reserve. The transition from the purely PAYG system to a more capital one, however, will require the construction of functional solutions for the transitional period in which we have yet to build reserves and fund services for older generations who have not yet built reserves for themselves. An apparent increase of the country’s debt seems therefore inevitable, but also present older generations must be held financially accountable through higher premiums or payments for benefits.

Ernest Hemingway
old age
Opis:
The article discusses the problem of the old age. It shows two aspects of it that are presented in Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea and The Old Man at the Bridge. Through the attitudes of the works' protagonists the complexity and heterogeneity of that phenomenon are proven. The article tries to show that the old age, like any other stage of human life, not only takes something away, but also gives new values. Old people do not constitute a homogeneous group; each individual experiences the old age in the way that is typical of himself or herself only. The old people from the works by Ernest Hemingway are a perfect example. They prove that there is a certain category of people who experience `the third age' not only in a cheerful and dignified way, but also as a period that gives them new possibilities of development and activity. On the other hand they are proof of the fact that one can assume a different attitude towards the old age – one of passive resignation, sometimes changing into the state of desperate escape connected with confining oneself to one's own world. The characterization of the old age and of getting old based on the literature of the subject made it possible to define these two notions from the point of view of biology, psychology and philosophy. The attitudes of an old man have become the key problem here; the attitudes towards life, death, the world, people, and especially towards one's own senility. Defining its specificity allows drawing a full image of the old age. A literary analysis of the two aspects of the old age in Ernest Hemingway's stories proves the thesis that there are as many old ages as people who are getting old. The stories are a source of knowledge concerning the old age and getting old, problems and joys of this stage of life. They also have an educational function. The protagonists of the works are ready to share their wisdom and experience, they are authorities, `the guards of the collective memory', `guides to the life of young people' and people who form and maintain the bonds between generations. Ernest Hemingway's stories The Old Man and the Sea and The Old Man at the Bridge are also an inspiration for undertaking the work of self-education for the old age. Each man prepares his own way of experiencing the old age during all of his life as senility grows together with us and its quality depends on our ability to understand its meaning and value.

Ausonius
old age
Opis:
Decimus Ausonius Magnus (ca 310-394) was a rhetorician, a teacher, a tutor of young Gratian and a highly-ranked, influential official, as well as one of the most famous poets of the late Roman Empire. In his poems, he frequently described the small world he belonged to, the daily routine of his own, of his relatives, professional colleagues and friends. As the poet reached his old age, he made it a subject of his poetry. Ausonius considers old age to be a blessing, a time which permits a wise, generous person to gather fruit of his good deeds and fulfilled duties, to watch children and grandchildren grow and achieve successes, to share one’s wisdom with younger persons. Ausonius shows his grandfather and his grandmother, his aunts, but first of all his father, Ausonius senior, as the examples of happy old persons, loving and loved, respected and needed by the people who surrounded them. He notices that old persons can be joyful, healthy and beautiful. Writing about old age, he mentions illness only once, while expressing his joy of having recovered and being able to send greetings to the grandson who celebrates his birthday. In spite of his age, Ausonius still loves his wife Sabina, who died many years before, the same way as he loved her when he was a young husband. He is deeply attached to Bissula, the charming German girl captured and given to him by the Emperor Valentinian I probably circa 368. Besides, he really enjoys spending time with his friends and with the Muses. In his epigrams, most of which don’t have personal, but rather literary character, the poet translates, quotes, paraphrases and imitates Greek and Latin epigrams which deal with the theme of old age. Although in Ausonius’ poems exists an obvious resemblance to their models, he grants himself much freedom in his remouldings. Not only he alters circumstantial details, expands or abbreviates the original, bur also uses them as mere starting points of his reflexion. It becomes more important for him to ponder over quickly passing youth or over a lover’s feelings towards a woman who rejected him when she was young, but whom he still admires, than to play a literary game. Ausonius never parodies nor even portrays women trying to attire men in their old age, even though he may mock old men pretending to look younger than they are. Neither he complains about pains and sorrows of old age. In all that, he remains a true Roman and a true gentleman.
