Opis:
Little is known about nurses’ viewpoints, experience, and opinions regarding this issue even though lifelong learning and distance education are of great importance in nursing. It is important to have knowledge about nurses’ lifelong-learning tendencies and attitudes toward distance education when structuring related education programmes. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between nurses’ lifelong-learning tendencies and their attitudes toward distance education. This is a descriptive research design with a stratified random sample. The sample included 417 nurses. The Lifelong-Learning Tendencies Scale and the Distance Education Attitude Scale were used to collect data. SPSS for Windows 16.0 was used for statistical analysis. Our results show that nurses do not tend to engage in lifelong learning, and they experience uncertainty in their attitudes toward distance education. We found a weak negative correlation between lifelong-learning tendencies and attitudes toward distance education. Continuing education programmes should be designed to improve and support nurses’ attitudes toward lifelong learning and distance education. Distance education supports nurses’ lifelong learning by updating their post-graduation knowledge improving comprehension about developments that affect and consciously broaden their viewpoint and intellectual level. Continuing education programmes to enhance nurses’ personal and professional development should be designed to improve their attitudes toward lifelong learning and distance education.

Opis:
Objectives: The study aimed at assessment of the Polish occupational medicine service system after over ten years of functioning in the current shape, made by occupational nurses. The article focuses on the job satisfaction level among Polish occupational medicine nurses. Materials and Methods: The survey was performed among 600 randomly selected occupational medicine nurses, registered in the regional occupational medicine centers. A questionnaire, designed by the research team, containing several questions concerning different aspects of OMS system assessment, including a part dedicated to job satisfaction assessment, was sent to the selected occupational nurses. The response rate was 33.3% (200 questionnaires). Results: The survey shows a relatively high satisfaction level in case of five out of eleven investigated job aspects, and a very low satisfaction level in case of two of them (“Possibility of professional promotion”, “Salary”). 26% of the OMS nurses had considered going abroad to work as a nurse in the general health care system, and 17% in the OHS system. Almost 25% of them would not choose a profession of an occupational nurse once again, including 10% who would not choose a nurse job at all. There is a statistically significant correlation between the general job satisfaction and satisfaction with other aspects of nursing work. A strong correlation was observed in case of “Scope of performed tasks” and “Cooperation with employers (clients of the occupational medicine service units)”. There is a statistically significant correlation of average strength between the decision concerning choosing an occupational nurse job in case of taking a decision on professional carrier once again and “General job satisfaction”. Conclusion: Polish occupational nurses are satisfied with their job, however only 26% are fully satisfied. In their work there is place for improvement. The areas which definitely need attention and improvement are “Possibility of professional promotion” and “Salary”. Improvements in cooperation between occupational nurses and physicians can make it close to the best practice.

Opis:
Background: Since the 19th century nursing has been dominated by female nurses. Although the evolution of men into nursing profession has increased recently, the presence of male nurses still surprises patients. Despite the stereotype, more and more men replenish the nursing staf. Aim of the study: The main goal of the conducted research is to get to know male nursing students and male nurses’ opinions on the topic of the profession chosen by them, as well as to discover the level of satisfaction they derive from their work. Materials and methods: The research is based on the diagnostic poll method carried out according to the authorial questionnaire which consisted of 20 one-choice questions and one which required indicating three answers. He anonymous survey was directed to male nurses and male nursing students. 60 people took part in the research: 42 male nurses and 18 male students of nursing. Results: 47 respondents feel satisfaction derived from their work. 45% of respondents would choose nursing again if they could decide about their career one more time. 66.7% of the examined male nurses are pleased with their earnings, but 46.2 % of them work in a few places. The questionnaire in 53.3 % showed that they had chosen the profession of the male nurse, because they wanted to work in medical profession, and in the 25% they acknowledged that nursing was a perfect profession for them. Conclusions: During the research a low percentage of male nurses was observed in health care teams. Therefore, it should suggest a bigger promotion of this profession among men. The analysis of the results showed, moreover, that there is a need to continue examinations concerning the issue, in the aim of identifying possible problems and increasing the awareness of the society and potential students.

Opis:
Wet nurses, i.e. hired breast-feeders of babies, were the subject matter of this research. It aims to systematize the advice that was formulated on the pages of “how-to” books regarding the search for, recruitment, and treatment of wet nurses in the homes of one’s charges. The specific duties of wet nurses that were especially expected of them are determined, as well as the errors most frequently committed in their performance, which the authors of how-to books described at length, in order to warn mothers against the incompetence of paid breast-feeders. A comparison of the views of authors of “how-to” books over nearly 70 years will allow us to determine a possible evolution of views regarding wet nursing. The “how-to” books on health, hygiene, and education from the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century (the period approximately from 1850-1918), published in Polish areas and addressed mainly at families, especially mothers, form the source material for the research. The use of this type of literature will allow us to reconstruct the promulgated image of wet nursing without broader reference to providing help for them, which is worth confronting with the “how-to”  recommendations, attempting to determine whether, and to what extent, they were reflected in everyday life (e.g. using epistolary or archival sources, and memoirs). Nevertheless, the authors of “how-to” books also referred to the practice of tending infants and young children, criticizing inappropriate behaviour of wet nurses, while the recommendations formulated by them were to remedy inappropriate behaviour occurring in reality. The issue of wet nursing has not hitherto been analysed in detail in Polish historiography. In recent years, though, a few texts or papers in which one can find more or less extensive information (the less extensive ones predominate) related to breastfeeding by wet nurses in the Polish areas in the Middle Ages, the period of Old Poland, or the partition period, have been published. Thus, it seems even more reasonable to explore this issue, which will help to fill a gap in the development of the history of breastfeeding, nursing, and tending infants and small children.

MISSCARE Survey
Opis:
The main aims of the study were to explore the frequency of missed nursing care (MNC) among Czech hospital nurses, and to find the relationship between nurse’s job satisfaction and MNC.Material and MethodsThe sample consisted of 513 nurses from 9 hospitals in the Czech Republic. Data were collected in January–August 2019 using the standardized MISSCARE Survey questionnaire, complemented with items assessing nurse’s job satisfaction and demographic data.ResultsThe most frequently missed nursing activities were patient ambulation and emotional support to the patient and/or family. The surveyed nurses were most satisfied with being a nurse and least satisfied with the level of teamwork on their unit. The strongest correlation was found between satisfaction with the current position and satisfaction with being a nurse; there was a negative correlation between satisfaction with the current position and the overall level of MNC. There was a significant trend between the rating of satisfaction with the current position and MNC.ConclusionsNurse’s job satisfaction is associated with the level of nursing care provided; more missed care means more dissatisfaction among nurses. Opis:
Background. Life satisfaction is an overall assessment of an individual's satisfaction with life relative to personal standards. People who feel satisfied with their lives can more easily overcome life's challenges, including those associated with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Material and methods. This study aimed to determine the level of life satisfaction (LLS) of Polish nurses. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, and Griffin adapted to Polish by Juczyński was used. The opinions of 239 nurses were statistically analyzed. Results. The mean life satisfaction score of the studied nurses was 19.78±5.47 points. Low LLS was found in 33.05% of the studied nurses, average LLS in 41,00%, and high LLS in 25.94%. Life satisfaction was influenced by a nurse’s place of residence and marital status. Survival of a SARS-CoV-2 infection had no significant effect on the nurses' life satisfaction. Conclusions. The majority of nurses reported a low to average LLS and steps should be taken to change this situation. It can be hypothesized that higher LLS among nurses will translate into a better quality of patient care.
Wprowadzenie. Satysfakcja z życia to ogólna ocena zadowolenia z życia konkretnej jednostki odnoszona do osobistych standardów. Osoby odczuwające satysfakcję z życia łatwiej pokonują trudności życiowe, również te związane z pandemią wirusa SARS-CoV-2. Materiał i metody. Celem było określenie poziomu satysfakcji z życia polskich pielęgniarek. Wykorzystano Skalę Satysfakcji z Życia (SWLS – The Satisfaction with Life Scale) autorstwa Dienera, Emmonsa, Larsen i Griffin w polskiej adaptacji Juczyńskiego. Analizie statystycznej poddano opinie 239 pielęgniarek. Wyniki.
