Opis:
In this study influence of selected parameters on the process of reduction of converter slag from refining of Cu-Pb-Fe alloy was numerically examined. The process of the slag reduction is carried out in Q 80 converters of Hoboken type for copper removal. Converter slags show high concentration of lead therefore they can be seen as an important component for further processing in rotary-rocking furnaces together with other lead-bearing materials. Three-dimensional simulation was performed using the IPSA (Inter Phase Slip Algorithm) module of two-phase flow from PHOENICS package. Numerical simulations have forecasted influence of changes in the slag chemical composition and the process time on the process course.

Opis:
Copper reduction represents one of the steps in the process of fire refining of blister copper. Process of copper reduction with natural gas as performed in the anode furnace was modeled. Numerical analysis was conducted using the IPSA (Inter- Phase-Slip Algorithm) module of PHOENICS package and standard turbulent model k - ε. The model takes into account the liquid phase - slag and phase of natural gas which is supplied through the tuyere from the bottom of the charge. Calculations were made for two different diameters of tuyeres for supply of reducer. Based on the calculations and analysis, it was found out that the gas flow which causes strong movement in the bath guarantees homogeneous composition of the liquid copper in each process stage. Application of a tuyere with a larger diameter results in a greater intensity of the reduction process and better use of the reducer.

Opis:
The reduction of carbon dioxide emission is an important aspect of the economic policy of each country. Institutions promoting environmental protection seek to reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions. One of the main emitters of harmful gases to the atmosphere is the steelmaking sector. The heating technology used in metallurgical works contributes to the amount of emitted carbon dioxide that forms as a result of the loss of steel and the combustion of fuel, whose thermal energy is used during the course of the charge heating process in the heating furnace. Achieving the imposed ecological targets by not exceeding the specified emission level is possible by implementing appropriate pollutant emission reducing technologies in the metallurgical industry. Based on numerical computation results, the effect of heating rate on the emission of carbon dioxide has been determined in the paper. This study demonstrates that by selecting the appropriate steel charge heating technology the emissions of greenhouse gases can be substantially reduced.

Opis:
Landslides are major natural hazards occurring in opencast mining. The problem of slope stability failure in the existing open pit mines as well as in those which are at a stage of technical closure is current issue in Poland and all over the world. This problem requires conducting in-depth and meaningful analysis which will identify the causes of processes characterized by a very rapid course and large extent. The paper presents the analysis of the landslide causes, which took place on May 11, 2011 on the western slope of the internal dump in “Piaseczno” sulphur mine (at a stage of technical closure). It was the first native sulphur open pit mine in Poland in which the exploitation was carried out from 1958 untill 1971. Reclamation works have been ongoing since 2005. The aim of these works is to create water body which will be used for recreational purposes. During the reclamation works on the western slope of “Piaseczno” reservoir the landslide processes were activated. A detailed description of geology and preliminary analyses of landslide processes are given in [1]. The development of landslide took place in a very violent manner. Moreover, the occurrence of the landslide caused the movement of the reservoir shoreline by about 350 meters and created a bay with the area of approximately 6 hectares. Displacement of 600 000 m3 of soil masses under the water resulted in its level rising by 56 cm. The total volume of ground masses was over 1 million m3. The analysis of the landslide process activation was carried out for two representative cross-sections of the internal dump. Numerical calculations were performed using the Limit Equilibrium Method (SLOPE/W GeoStudio) and the Finite Difference Method using the Shear Strength Reduction Method (FLAC Slope). They were aimed at determining the shape and extent of potential slip surface, which would correspond to the observed landslide. The purpose of the analysis, the results of which are presented in the article, was to define how the process proceeded and what factors contributed to its activation.
