Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The first objective of this paper is to evaluate countries’ position in the international trade network with regard to their two dimensions: their self-sufficiency and extent of their trade contacts. The second objective is to test the implications of the utilized criteria for the European Union member states. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: It was decided to classify countries using the data on foreign value added in trade and network characteristics (mainly – vertex centrality). Different categories of countries were identified and labelled according to that criteria. Later, correlation analysis was used to determine if the utilised criteria had any effect on countries’ welfare and shock resistance. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: In our opinion, countries that play an important role in international trade network should be important partners for numerous other countries. However, that criterion is not enough, as many less developed countries serve simply as assembly lines for value created elsewhere. Therefore we focused also on the share of imported value added to the total value of exported goods. We then tested if our notions translate to national welfare and export’s resistance to external shocks, such as the Great Trade Collapse of 2008/2009. RESEARCH RESULTS: The classification concept was applied to a sample of EU member states displaying differences between Old and New member states. The analysis proved differences in welfare and stability of export performance during the Great Trade Collapse among countries with different levels of export and import contacts and intensity of relying on imported inputs for their own export production. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It is vital to diversify export and import contacts due to possible impact of those characteristics on welfare level and stability of trade flows. At the same time, the effects of engagement in international production networks creates a tradeoff: higher dependence on foreign inputs may stabilize trade dynamics at the expense of lowering GDP level.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of regulation as a tool to create values for both business entities and individual clients due to competition development in the Polish market of rail transport services. Methodology: This study was of a conceptual character. It was based on the analysis of the notion of the rail transport services regulation and the main regulation problems that have appeared in the rail transport regulation practice so far. The analysis of literary sources as well as practice enabled the author to highlight the circumstances when the regulation becomes a necessity and to discuss the conditions for its introduction. Findings: Reviewing the regulation on Polish railway transportation market, the author presents a fundamental conclusion - despite all the changes on the market, regulation does not produce assumed results perceived as an increase of transportation role in economy. According to author, major improvement of institutional and marketing efficiency of regulation entity is essential, as it is relevant for producing favorable results concerning the way the market operates, behavior of the market players as well as building customer value. Originality: Market regulation is a new phenomenon in Polish rail transport. The study discussed the notion of regulatory service. A value-for-clients model was also offered, i.e. the clients of regulatory activities in the course of the competition development in the rail transport services.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to show how the global value chain (GVC) concept has spread since the early 2000s. The article assumes that GVC is no longer just a concept or an analytical framework; rather that a new type of business unit has emerged. The article is based on the literature comparison which served to search the main decision-making criteria. The article found that the main decision-making criteria are based on the economies of a network, behind which the spirit of informationalism can be found. The connection between Powell’s stylized models of markets, hierarchy, networks and Gereffi’s theoretical framework of governance structure at GVCs was discovered. The Powell-Gereffi combined model represents clearly described modalities of governance. The paper asks whether the entire economic system is covered by the Powell-Gereffi division. Kornai and Braudel both recognized the routine functioning of the basic-economy, without which the whole economy would lose its stability. It is necessary to formulate how this vegetative or infra-economy relates to the GVCs and to our globalized world economy. The article interprets the Smile Curve, and determines a possible way of measuring the distortion of smile.

Opis:
The study examines the possibility of applying the selected components of the theory of six value aggregation paths in designing walking pathways. Based on spatial data collected using a landscape assessment method on the aesthetic values of the landscape of the place under analysis, a model was developed of the network of links of the landscape aesthetic value using a minimum increase in this value. The authors designed scenarios for the optimal routes of walking pathways. The conducted study leads to the conclusion that the minimum value increase path may create a good basis for designing walking pathways. Not only is this manifested in the varied route of the pathway, but also in it being designed in such a way that the landscape’s aesthetic value increases beyond an assumed level of aesthetic value. In addition, the use of hexagonal basic fields enables the design of various route lengths and the optimization of time by adapting the model to a specific group of recipients.

Opis:
Artykuł przyjmuje perspektywę logiki dominującej, tj. konceptualizacji biznesu oraz krytycznych decyzji alokacyjnych, by zaproponować typologię strategii sieciowych.
This paper adopts a dominant logic perspective, i.e. conceptualization of business and critical resource allocation, in order to provide a network strategies typology. The first type is based on structural logic and seeks positional, configuration and relational rents. The second logic is resource-based and views networks as a resource access structure, a critical resource per se and a competence development challenge. Third, the value-creation and value-appropriation logic opens ways to exploit coopetition or ecosystems in firms’ strategies.
