    Alexander Kuprin belongs to the group of social writers at turn of 19th century, who brought up aspects arising from contacts with different cultures, religions and languages on ethnically heterogeneous territory of the Russia. The author of The Duel eagerly used short prose forms, which he enriched with environmental and ethnographic reality, picturing mentality, customs and social problems, also religious and culture differences of other than Russian ethnic groups. In his work we can fi nd portrayals of Crimean Tatars and Greeks, Poles, Polishchuks, Ukraininas, Circassians, Georgians, Armenians, and Jews.

    I argue for amazing values of the tradition of romanticism. I pay attention to connections between this tradition and the present. I write about necessary changes in reading romantic literature at school. In my point of view the most important is not to talk only about national values. It is really necessary in Poland. We must not continue to think that patriotism means only fighting with other people. Forming students’ national identity is one of the main duties at school but the romantic way of understanding patriotism has to be changed. It is very dangerous in our century. Many researchers also write about it. It is a very important problem of literary studies. I also present suggestions to work with Reduta Ordona in primary school and in junior high school. There are different ideas presented in methodical literature as well as my own suggestions.

    The rise and continuance of a nation and a state requires the systematic work of educating every generation. This role should be played by civic education, which starts in the parental home, and continues at school, but which is also the task of the authorities. True civic education is free from politics and ideology. An important role in civic education is played by symbols which express the duties of every citizen towards the nation and the state. National symbols, which strengthen the sense of citizenship, should inform daily life, and the authorities should carry out a policy of education through symbols which denote the culture, traditions, customs, and history of a given nation.

    The present article shows the moulding of the national identity of the Polish, their struggle of independence through the national uprising as well as the literature and the art. The period of a romanticism in Poland is the formation time of a national culture and myths (The Polish Messianism). They will build the mentality of Polish people during next decades. The cultural patterns formed in this period, especially the struggle of freedom and the sovereignty, will go back in the periods of a civil or a political captivity. Untill today is the Polish romanticism - as was shown in the text - an element of the national culture and tradition, which is referenced by artists. In special pieces of the literature of the period became the canon of Polish national literature.

    The author describes the custom of two villages in Hargita county in Hungary. As the two settlements are close to forests, they abound both in pines and birches, which enables the inhabitants, for instance, the chopping-down of fourteen pines for a wedding as bridal young trees. Apart from weddings, there are numerous other occasions to set up young trees. The author also attempts to interpret the tradition, describe the functions of young tree setting in the limelight of its magical, artistic and ethnic contexts from the 1950s to the present days.

    W ostatnim czasie pojawia się coraz więcej publikacji poświęconych fenomenowi „wielojęzyczności” literatury białoruskiej. Jest to związane z intensywnym rozwojem literatury rosyjskojęzycznej we współczesnej Białorusi i z problemem jej narodowej tożsamości, poszukiwaniem odpowiedzi na pytanie: do jakiej kultury ona należy – rosyjskiej czy białoruskiej? Inne zasadnicze pytanie: czy współczesna rosyjskojęzyczna literatura Białorusi nie stanowi zagrożenia dla rozwoju narodowej literatury białoruskojęzycznej? Badanie powyższego problemu prowadzi do wniosku, że zagrożeniem dla rozwoju współczesnej literatury białoruskojęzycznej nie jest literatura rosyjskojęzyczna, ale te społeczno-polityczne i ekonomiczne warunki, w których istnieją obydwie literatury i które sprzyjają wzrostowi twórczości rosyjskojęzycznej na Białorusi: eliminacja języka białoruskiego ze sfery aktywnego wykorzystania do sfery kulturowej, utożsamienie przez władze niepaństwowych białoruskojęzycznych publikacji z opozycyjnymi, wpływ potężnego i pociągającego autorów rosyjskiego rynku wydawniczego itd.
    More and more publications devoted to the phenomenon of „multilingualism” in Belorussian literature are appearing nowadays. This fact is highly connected with the intensive development and the problem of Russian-language literature’s national identity in modern Belarus in an attempt to answer the question: what culture – Russian or Belarusian – does it belong to? Another important problem is whether modern Russian-language literature of Belarus harms the development of literature in Belarus? Detailed research of this question shows that it is not the Russian-language literature that is harmful, but social, political and economic conditions in which both elements exist and which support the development of the Russian-language art in Belarus: expulsion of Belarusian language from the sphere of active use to the sphere of the cultural reservations, identification of non-state publications as the ones that resist state policy, powerful influence of the Russian book market, etc.

    Artykuł niniejszy jest osobistą refleksją autora nad kondycją współczesnego śląskoznawstwa, traktowanego jako autonomiczna przestrzeń badawcza, dla której odniesieniem staje się podmiotowość regionu, a także racje, potrzeby, intencje, zamiary trzech państw granicznych: Polski, Niemiec, Czech. Istotny element refleksji stanowią przemiany tożsamościowe Górnego Śląska, kształtowane pod wpływem transformacji ustrojowej w minionym ćwierćwieczu. Ich dynamika determinowana aktywnością nieistniejącej wcześniej mniejszości niemieckiej i ruchów autonomicznych, odzwierciedla charakter, jakość i skalę społecznych przeobrażeń. Głównym przesłaniem artykułu jest teza, że w okresie od przełomu 1989 r. od chwili obecnej, nastąpiła dewaluacja większości śląskoznawczych ocen, sądów, stanowisk, nastawień itp. Skutkuje to brakiem jasnego kodu komunikacyjnego i przejrzystej narracji. Straciły na znaczeniu pojęcia stygmatyzujące dotąd całą rzeczywistość śląską, a w ich miejsce nie wykształciły się jeszcze nowe – o równorzędnej sile oddziaływania i wiarygodności. Śląskoznawstwo współczesne skazane jest więc na otwarty i perspektywiczny dyskurs, tak w sferze empirii jak i metodologii.
    The presented article is a personal reflection on the condition of contemporary Silesian studies. Silesian studies are treated as an autonomous research area, related to the regional identity, but also to the interests, needs and intentions of three neighbouring states: Poland, Germany and Czech Republic. The essential element of this reflection is evolution of identities in Upper Silesia, caused by the political transformation of Poland in the years 1989-2014. Their dynamics, determined by the activity of, earlier non-existent, German minority and autonomous movements, reflects the quality and scale of social transformation. The main thought of the article is a thesis, that in the period from 1989 to the present, the most of opinions, beliefs and judgments within the Silesian studies have been devaluated. The effect of this process is a lack of clear narrative and conceptual framework. Hitherto existing labels stigmatizing the Silesian reality had lost its value, but at the same time this empty space have not been filled in with new ’Silesian’ narratives. Thus, the future of Silesian studies will not get away from open and perspective discourse, both in empirical and methodological terms.
