Narrative identity allows various experiences to be integrated and incorporated into the concept of the self. Recent studies indicate that being aware of developing the story about the self that brings cohesion and meaning may be adaptive. This paper presents preliminary findings across three studies (two quantitative methods and one mixed) aimed at exploring the phenomenon of awareness of narrative identity in terms of its relations to other aspects of narrative identity and meaning-making (meaning in life, self-esteem, and post-traumatic growth). The total number of participants in all studies was 840 (N1 = 254, N2 = 424, N3 = 162). The results indicate that stronger awareness of narrative identity is related to higher self-narrative inclination and reflexivity and may be adaptive in terms of meaning-making and coping with traumatic events. People who were more aware of a narrative identity produced more elaborated and coherent self-narratives about an important past relationship. Additionally, they had a stronger tendency to integrate these past experiences with a sense of self-identity. Surprisingly, awareness of narrative identity was not related to self-esteem. These findings are discussed in terms of narrative identity literature. Moreover, possible directions for further studies to expand our understanding of awareness of narrative identity are proposed.

The specific situation of a German academic working outside of Germany emerges via the differential and non-simultaneous absorption (or incorporation) of methodological schools and traditions. This article shows a possible means of executing the balancing act between the learned "third culture" and your own tradition. It is about the interfaces between experience and expectation which one can find them through understanding the narrative structures. One can glean profound understanding via: narrative structure, deep structure of the text, on the basis of stories and cultural tropes, and through to structured narrative itself and to the story than the way the literature appropriation in the foreign language specific perspective. We only know as much as we are able to express. The language cultural identity exists because of the language and it is equal as narrative identity.

The text is an analysis of interrelations binding autobiographical narration to individual and social identity. The first part tackles the fundamental connection between narration and individual, personal identity of the narrator – Paul Ricoeur, serving as a guide to this fundamental part of the proposed analysis, assumes that the narrative continuum follows and imitates the temporal continuum, constituting a flow in which it becomes possible to inscribe stories modifying and corroborating the reflected course of life. Conceptualizing and bringing to consciousness one’s course of life, auto-narration constitutes both a form of conscientious self-judgement and an occasion for self-deception. In the second part, the author attempts to show how auto narration and its significance for the individual identity changes, when it gets written down in the form of autobiography, subjected to the rigor of the writing and entering in complex interrelationships with social memory and identity. Here the author’s guides are among others Philippe Lejeune, Janet Verner Gunn and Georges Gusdorf. In the third part, the hitherto reconstructed structure of auto-narration and autobiography is destroyed: referring to such authors as Louis A. Renza, Jean Starobinski, John Sturrock, Michel Beaujour and Jacques Derrida, I demonstrate that the autobiographical undertaking is doubtful, and that the optimistic project of saving oneself by means of auto-narration and autobiography is an illusion. The presence of Derrida in the text is scarcely visible; yet it is Derrida, in dialogue with the late Ricoeur, that show us the way out from the autobiographical and identitary trap.

Teza. Badania jakościowe, uznawane przez wielu badaczy za subiektywistyczne i przez to mało wiarygodne, reprezentują jeden z wielu sposobów prowadzących do obiektywnego poznania. Omówione koncepcje. W artykule autorka omawia koncepcję Susan E. Chase dotyczącą wywiadu narracyjnego oraz koncepcję tożsamości narracyjnej w wywiadzie biograficznym Dana McAdamsa. Opisuje także podejście autobiograficzne oraz podejście auto/biograficzne, wskazując na istotne różnice między nimi. Podaje przykłady zastosowań obu podejść. Wyniki i wnioski. Dzięki biografiom i autobiografiom badacz ma możliwość poznania kontekstu sytuacyjnego, środowiskowego i historycznego badanego zjawiska. Auto/biograficzne narracje dostarczają także wiedzy na temat kształtowania się życia psychicznego i całej osobowości człowieka. Oryginalność. Badania auto/biograficzne wykorzystywane są z powodzeniem w edukacji osób dorosłych. Pełnią wiele ważnych funkcji, m.in. poznawczą, krytyczną, wychowawczą, demaskatorską, terapeutyczną.
Thesis. Qualitative research, regarded by many researchers as subjectivistic and therefore unreliable, is one of many ways leading to objective cognition. Discussed concepts. In the article the author discusses the concept of Susan E. Chase regarding narrative interview and the concept of narrative identity in the biographical interview of Dan McAdams. It also describes both the autobiographical approach and the auto/biographical approach, indicating the significant differences between them. Additionally, it provides examples of the application of both approaches. Results and conclusions. Owing to biographies and autobiographies, the researcher has the opportunity to learn about the situational, environmental and historical context of the studied phenomenon. Auto/biographical narratives also provide knowledge about shaping one’s mental life and the entirety of human personality. Originality. Auto/biographical surveys are successfully used in adult education. They perform many important functions, including cognitive, critical, educational, unmasking, and therapeutic.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie wyników badania jakościowego dotyczącego narracji związanych z przyjmowaniem tożsamości na bazie internetowego memu doomera. Ramę teoretyczną dla przedstawionego badania stanowią postulaty psychologii narracyjnej, głównie koncepcja tożsamości narracyjnej Dana P. McAdamsa. W myśl tej koncepcji tożsamość człowieka kształtowana jest poprzez narracje, które dotyczą jego życia, zatem aby odkryć, jaki człowiek jest, należy poznać historie, które snuje na swój temat. W zaprezentowanym badaniu udział wzięły 82 osoby w wieku od 14 do 31 lat (M = 19; SD = 3,71). Najwięcej badanych pochodziło z Polski (26,58%) i Stanów Zjednoczonych (24%). Do badania wykorzystano kwestionariusz zbudowany z pytań otwartych, dzięki czemu uzyskane dane mają charakter narracji. Analiza uzyskanego materiału odbyła się w oparciu o zasady metody hermeneutycznej zaproponowanej przez Magdalenę Żurko oraz metody analizy hermeneutycznej Ewy Kruchowskiej. Z przytoczonych danych wynika, że osoba utożsamiająca się z doomerem to osoba o pesymistycznym poglądzie na współczesny świat, ludzi i życie. W historii badanych pojawiały się momenty krytyczne, które zaważyły na przyjęciu tej tożsamości, np. utrata bliskich lub niepowodzenia życiowe.
The aim of the article is to present results of qualitative study regarding narratives of people that build identity based on Internet meme, in this case doomer meme. The theoretical framework for the presented study is based on concepts of narrative psychology, mainly the concept of narrative identity by Dan P. McAdams. According to this concept, a person’s identity is constructed through narratives that relate to his/her life, therefore, in order to discover what a person is like, one needs to know the stories he/she tells about himself/herself. In the presented study, participated 82 people aged 14–31 (M = 19; SD = 3.71). Most of the respondents were from Poland (26.58%) and the United States (24%). A questionnaire composed of open questions was used for the study, so the gathered data could be of narrative nature. The analysis of the acquired data was based on the principles of hermeneutic method proposed by Magdalena Żurko and the method of hermeneutic analysis by Ewa Kruchowska. The results shows that a person identifying himself/herself with a doomer is a person with a pessimistic view on the modern world, people and life in general. In life stories of respondents, there were critical moments that made them uphold such identity, e.g. loss of a close relative or major life setbacks.

The paper sets out to analyse Conrad’s novella A Smile of Fortune and its narrator-protagonist’s crisis of identity in terms of the Jungian concept of individuation. The dynamic process of constructing the narrative identity, as defined by Ricoeur, finds its psychological equivalent in the concept of individuation which involves recognizing and assimilating the opposites that reside within the unconscious and aims at transforming the psyche into the Self or coincidentia oppositorum. The paper focuses on the narrator’s interaction with Jacobus and Alice as the stages of the individuation process which include a confrontation with the shadow and the anima, the archetypes of the unconscious.

Acting and suffering subjectivity makes a grand sujet in Ricoeur's philosophy. In his Time and Narrative Ricoeur created the notion of narrative identity which is an individual internalized and evolving life strory. The narrative alone might define the “who”. Whoever lives and exists, suffers. Ricoeur metaphorically defined life as a cloth. We can add, Wiercinski continues, that this cloth is woven with pain. It is pain which makes the cloth, and, at the same time, it is also a joy of the human condition. As humans, we are called to wear this cloth as well as to understand what does it mean - from the hermeneutic perspective.

Paul Ricoeur declares that “being-entangled in stories” is an inherent property of the human condition. He introduces the notion of narrative identity-a form of identity constructed on the basis of a self-constructed life-narrative, which becomes a source of meaning and self-understanding. This article wishes to present chosen instances of life writing whose subjects resist yielding a life-story and reject the notions of narrative and identity. In line with Adam Phillips’s remarks regarding Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes (1975), such works-which I refer to as fragmentary life writing-emerge out of a profound scepticism about any form of “fixing” oneself and confining the variety and randomness of experience to one of the available autobiographical plots. The primary example of the genre is Joe Brainard’s I Remember (1975)-an inventory of approximately 1,500 memories conveyed in the form of radically short passages beginning with the words “I remember.” Despite the qualified degree of unity provided by the fact that all the recollections come from the consciousness of a single person, the book does not arrange its content in any discernible order-chronological or thematic; instead, the reader is confronted with a life-in-fragments. Although individual passages could be part of a coming-of-age, a coming-out or a portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-man narrative, Brainard is careful not to let any of them consolidate. An attempt at defining the characteristics of the proposed genre will be followed by an indication of more recent examples of fragmentary life writing and a reflection on its prospects for development

The article is an attempt to discuss the specificity of the narrative in radio documentary. The documentary is treated as an artistic form of radio based on the character’s statement born during a meeting with a reporter, the documentary maker. The narrative is treated as an individual statement by the character, but also as a text of culture. Dialogue rules both perspectives. The relationship takes place between the character and the reporter, but also between subsequent elements of the audio material composed according to the author’s intention. We also discuss about the radio documentary being as a form of dialogue with the listener. The essence of the article is the proposed divisions of the radio reportage narrative, taking into account the narrative as a personal statement and as a text. The categorization was supported by examples from Polish radio documentaries. Theoretical considerations are based on studies on artistic radio genres, psychological narrative, narrative identity, and the philosophy of encounter. Radio documentary, which is emphasized by theoreticians and practitioners of the genre, is born out of a situation where there is a dialogical meeting between the author and the protagonist, and the verbalization of experiences during this meeting is a form of identity building. A look at radio documentary from a psychological perspective and the resulting classifications will indicate the importance of interdisciplinary research into audio artistic genres.

In this paper it is argued that digital technologies will have a transformative effect in the social sciences in general and in the fast developing field of narrative studies in particular. It is argued that the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of narrative approaches are further enhanced by the development of digital technologies and that the collection of digital data will also drive theoretical and methodological developments in narrative studies. Biographical Sociology will also need to take account of lives lived in, and transformed by, the digital domain. How these technologies may influence data collection methods, how they might influence thinking about what constitutes data, and what effects this might have on the remodeling of theoretical approaches are all pressing questions for the development of a Twenty First Century narratology. As Marshall McLuhan once put it “First we shape our tools and then our tools shape us”.

Der Artikel betrifft die Erkenntnisfunktion der Literatur. Es wird gezeigt, dass uns die literarischen Narrationen aufgrund ihrer erzählerischen mimetischen Funktion ermöglichen, uns mit fiktionalen Helden zu identifizieren. Auf diese Weise erweitern sie unseren Erkenntnishorizont und beeinflussen unsere eigenen biografischen Erzählungen. In diesem Prozess gewinnen wir die Möglichkeit, über unsere Autonarrationen nachzudenken, sie aufs Neue zu erzählen und uns zu erkundigen, wer wir wirklich sind und was unser Selbst ausmacht. Um den Beweis dafür zu erbringen, beziehe ich mich einerseits auf die ethische Kritik von Marta Nussbaum und Wayne C. Booth, andererseits auf den Entwurf der narrativen Identität von Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, Marya Schlechtman und David de Grazia. Ich argumentiere damit, dass ein solcher Austausch zwischen der Identität des Lesers und der Identität der fiktionalen Gestalt möglich ist, weil beide einen narrativen Charakter haben.
The paper concerns the cognitive function of literature. I show that literary stories, because of their narrative and mimetic structure, enable us to identify with fictitious heroes, and thus become able to widen our cognitive as well as moral horizon, and to influence our own life-stories. In such a process, we receive the opportunity to re-tell and re-think our personal narration and in such a way learn who we really are and what it means to be ourselves. In order to demonstrate this, I refer to Martha Nussbaum‘s and Wayne C. Booth‘s ethical criticism on the one hand, and to Paul Ricoeur’s, Alasdair MacIntyre’s, Charles Taylor’s, Marya Schechtman’s and David DeGrazia’s theory of narrative identity on the other. I argue that such a mutual exchange between the reader’s identity and a fictional character is possible as both of them have a narrative structure and are sort of a story.
Artykuł dotyczy poznawczej funkcji literatury. Pokazuję, że ze względu na swoją narracyjną, mimetyczną strukturę literackie narracje umożliwiają nam utożsamianie się z fikcyjnymi bohaterami, a w ten sposób poszerzają nasz horyzont poznawczy i wpływają na nasze własne opowieści biograficzne. W tym procesie zyskujemy możliwość przemyślenia i opowiedzenia na nowo naszych autonarracji i dowiedzenia się, kim naprawdę jesteśmy i co to znaczy być sobą. Aby to udowodnić, odwołuję się do krytyki etycznej Marty Nussbaum i Wayne`a C. Bootha z jednej strony oraz do koncepcji tożsamości narracyjnej Paula Ricoeura, Alasdair`a MacIntyre`a, Charlesa Taylora, Maryi Schechtman i Davida De Grazii z drugiej. Argumentuję, że taka wzajemna wymiana pomiędzy tożsamością czytelnika i tożsamością fikcyjnej postaci jest możliwa, ponieważ obydwie one mają charakter narracyjny.

Opis:
Studies on teachers’ identity constitute an essential field in pedeutologic research. Among empirical works undertaking this subject-matter, the research trend using F. Schutze’s methodological concept is clearly distinguishable. This article attempts at familiarizing the reader with a different, drawing on conversational analysis, approach to narrative identity research. The essence of this approach is to introduce the category of positioning into research. Positioning may be a useful tool for the conceptualization and the study of the process of narrative identity constitution.
Badania nad tożsamością nauczycieli stanowią istotny obszar badań pedeutologicznych. Wśrod prac empirycznych podejmujących tę problematykę, wyraźnie wyodrębnia się nurt badań wykorzystujących koncepcję metodologiczną zaproponowaną przez F. Schutze. Tekst jest próbą przybliżenia czytelnikom innego podejścia w badaniu tożsamości narracyjnej, nawiązującego do analizy konwersacyjnej. Istotą tego podejścia jest wprowadzenie do badań kategorii pozycjonowania, która może stanowić użyteczne narzędzie dla konceptualizacji i badania procesu konstytuowania się tożsamości narracyjnej.

The focus of the article is on data-self technology in digital entertainment - virtual entities that replicate and/or are influenced by players’ behaviors and actions, working as agential mirrors on the screen. Little efforts have been done in investigating their potential in social research and educational technology; however, data-selves can serve as promising self-revealing tools toward personal identities and narrations. In order to enlighten their effectiveness, a multidisciplinary framework led by the core concepts of “narrative identity” and “discursive-practical consciousness” is advanced. The proposal has been tested (pre-post interviews and play sessions) with an empirical exploration involving n:32 participants and the video games Black and White 2 and Forza: Motorsprint 5, which include data-self features. Results show that this technology can make a difference in engaging and stimulating subjects’ interest and feedback, but further researches are needed to deepen its scope and range of application.
