Opis:
This paper aims to present a historical overview of the westernization process in music culture of the Ottoman Empire. Contrary to what is generally believed, the transformation of Ottoman music from the monophonic system based on melodic and rhythmic patterns (makams and usuls) to the European polyphony was not the idea of the newly formed Turkish state of the early 20th century. In the beginning of the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire faced decline. Under the threat of European domination, remaining sultans tried to balance the level of development in science and technology between the West and their own country by great reforms. In the 19th century, for the Ottoman court the adaptation of the western music system was a symbol of acculturation and modernization. In the last decades of the Ottoman Empire, with the help of European musicans and theoreticians, the first institutions of western style music education were established. Thus, surprisingly, music culture seems to be a shared heritage of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey.

The article shows the functioning of concrete poetry in the sphere dominated by techno-logical solutions, being characteristic of the culture associated with new media. Sub-jected to analysis and interpretation is the multimedia performance by Marcin Dymiter and Ludomir Franczak, who combined Polish, Czech and German literary texts with electronic music. In their vision, the life of concrete poetry develops in the dimension of the contemporary urban subculture and in the world of sound generated by various types of apparatus. The relationship between poetry and music abounds in various defects and interfer-ences, which are a deliberate effect introduced by of the authors of this artistic experi-ment. The broad range of rustles and murmurs draw on the sound tradition of modern poetry, as well as industrial music. The performance exposes the symbolic meaning of the emission of sound coming into interaction with poetic text.

In this paper, I make an attempt to present the analytical possibilities offered by using metric feet as units that shape the course of a (piano) piece. This approach results from cognitive studies that clearly show that the perception of auditory events is based on grouping them into larger units on the basic strong–weak axis. In this approach, the foot is a scheme of one strong sound and one or two weak sounds (in different combinations) that repeats regularly in the course of the work. In this article, I present the most common ways of distinguishing strong sounds: using duration, dynamics, and pitch (features derived analogously from language, distinguishing strong syllables from the speech stream) and characterising the most common feet.

The work begins by asking the questions of how contemporary phenomenology is concerned with music, and how phenomenological descriptions of music and musical experiences are helpful in grasping the concreteness of these experiences. I then proceed with minor findings from phenomenological authorities, who seem to somehow need music to explain their phenomenology. From Maurice Merleau-Ponty to Jean-Luc Nancy and back to Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, there are musical findings to be asserted. I propose to look at phenomenological studies of the musical aspects of existence as they appear in various philosophical works bringing together different accounts of music and aesthetics and pointing towards phenomenological study as a methodology for everyday aesthetics. While there are many different areas of music phenomenology such as studies of sound and listening, studies in perception of musical works, in experience of artistic creation, in singing and playing musical instruments, and phenomenology of transcendent or religious horizons of the experience of music, it is most promising—I suggest—to look at phenomenological studies of music from the perspective of everyday happenings and discoveries of musical aspects of life. Thus, I attempt to display the uses of phenomenology in finding musical aspects of everyday existence as well as in describing and illuminating the art of music. A look at Roman Ingarden’s and Mikel Dufrenne’s most intuitive and promising ideas will be broadened with a perspective from Don Ihde and Arnold Berleant.

This text is a short description of a new academic course: “Music journalism”. The author offers an analysis of media forms in press, as well as on the radio, television and the internet. Besides the traditional forms and genres, students can analyse such forms as internet encyclopaedias or websites dedicated to music. The teacher analyses with the students the frame structures of television and radio stations, and the nature of broad-casts. There is also a possibility of analysing music press: articles, reviews and columns. The next step is teaching students to write such forms as a column or a review. Students learn practical skills in a studio, as the lecturer teaches them to broadcast live radio pro-grammes (cooperating with a professional radio DJ). The course gives an introduction to the history of classical and popular music.

Eliminating cheesiness. Opis:
Research on relations between art and politics has its tradition. However, it mainly refers to literature, whose part, as far as its authors’ intentions are concerned, is of a political character, in a lesser degree – of a picture. Sound, especially if it is not linked to a text and/or a picture, is considerably more seldom analyzed from the point of view of its importance in politics. As long as a word and a picture happen to convey unequivocal political meaning, qualified as such by most recipients, sound cannot be obviously considered a political message. It is questionable whether music can convey any meaning in whatever sense. If one can manage to suppress this doubt, it will result in a question how to construe the senses conveyed through the medium of melodic – rhythmic structures. However, the findings in the field of widely understood humanities affirm that music serves as a creator’s message directed to both individual and collective receivers. Political science studies often bring up a matter of communication between authorities and the subjects (in authoritarian regimes), and also between representatives of a nation or people claiming their role and electorate (in democratic regimes). At the end of the 1960s, American and Canadian scientists made room for music, one of the most widespread communicators, i. a. in political sphere. At that time, interdisciplinary teams including American sociologists, political scientists, culture and media experts undertook.

Opis:
Music is an important part of our emotional and spiritual life. And certainly, no technical device can communicate the emotions one receives when sitting in the music hall and enjoying live performance by the favorite artist. This is especially true in the era of music consumption, when even CD quality - forget about vinyl -is forgotten in favor of MP3 format, which is more comfortable in use but is known for faults of compression. Certainly, live performances give feelings incomparable with listening to such recordings. But Ukraine lacks the culture of attending and organizing live shows, and this is a problem to deal with if we want the new generations to understand what musical beauty is about. Music enriches personality, and Ukrainians now are effectively deprived of it.

Opis:
Bolesław Leśmian’s The Mad Violinist contains many suggestions concerning the musical side of the drama, especially its properties of sound and expression. The violin and vio-lin playing fulfill an important function – coloristic, dramaturgic and symbolic – in the work. Also appearing are the sounds of other instruments (gong, dulcimer, plucked string instrument), refined musical timbres and acoustic effects (sound portrait of the Woodland Water Nymph), musical profiling of the characters (Alaryel plays the violin, Chryza dances on stilts, the Witch strikes the clock) and ‘ballet’ scenes – solo and ensem-ble (Chryza’s dance, Chryza and the Water Nymph’s dramatic duet, the dance suite in the Second Delusion). The poet also described very suggestively the expressive categories of the fragments set to music. Their skillful distribution in time and combination on a contrast principle, as well as the utilization of their dramatic potential, contribute to the reinforcement of their power of expression. Alaryel’s virtuoso showpiece, maintained in a furioso-type tone, leads to a true explosion of sound and contrasts with the lyrical and wistful lamentoso played over the grave of the Water Nymph. However, the ethereal timbre of the Water Nymph, who is accompanied by an indigo dawn, emphasizes the symbolic significance of this character. The musical components in The Mad Violinist blend perfectly with the other elements – word, gesture, stage movement and the visual side of the drama, creat-ing an extraordinary whole of great artistic value. The present article also proposes a reference to the violin music of Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe, whose oeuvre fits into the European Symbolist trend. His Six Sonatas for Violin Solo op. 27 from 1927 form a peculiar interpretative context for Leśmian’s drama. The point here is not to suggest any actual relationship, but rather to draw attention to the similar type of artistic sensitivity and imagination, feel for color and deeply sensual manner of experiencing the world.
