Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the course of an infection with group A type T-3 hemolytic β streptococcus. Experiments were carried out on Porton white mice and in vitro blood plates. General and local infections with streptococci were induced in animals. The infected animals were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation. The lethal effect of infection was significantly inhibited using hyperbaric oxygenation on the first and second day following the infection.

A variety of Acanthamoeba spp. pathogenic strains were isolated from water pools in the area of Poznań. In many cases amoebae invaded lugs, kidney heart, liver and diaphragm causing significant changes in these Organs. The presence of amoeba outside of CNS was found mainly in the early periods of infection. Amoeba isolated from different organs of dead animals did not exhibit any specificity in relation to the organs in following infections. Infection with both low-and high-virulent strains resulted in pathomorphological changes of similar character. However, changes induced by low-virulent parasites developed later and were less extensive.

Opis:
Studies were undertaken to evaluate by parasitological techniques the course of intestinal and muscular invasions in mice infected with Trichinella spiralis and treated with TFX-Thymomodulin (TFX-Th). Studies were conducted on 120 mice of BALB/c and SWISS strains, infected each with a mean invasive dose of 300 T. spiralis larvae. TFX-Th (Thymoorgan GmbH Pharmazie Co. KG, Vienenburg, Germany) was administered subcutaneously at 30 mg/kg body weight. Depending upon duration of TFX-Th administration and stages of intestinal and muscular invasions, three experiments were distinguished in the study. The results indicated that TFX-Th promoted eradication of larvae from muscles, whether administered at the early of the late stage of T. spiralis invasion.

Opis:
In the course of trichinellosis in mice the numerous cells inside larval capsules were observed. Beginning on 14 day post infection (dpi) they were seen in about 7% of infected muscles fibers but at 21 dpi the percentage of capsules with the cells amounted to 77. In the next stage of infection the number of capsules containing cells continued to increase and reach almost 100% at 60 dpi. The identification of the cells was carried out by the indirect immunoenzymatic method using anti-CD4⁺, anti-CD8⁺ and anti-macrophage (Mac-1 antigen) monoclonal antibodies. In course of observation the level of CD4⁺ cells decreased from 11.3 to 0.7, of CD8⁺ from 17.7 to 3.0 and of macrophages from 71.0 to 23.1 %. The most numerous CD4⁺ cells were seen at 14 dpi while the CD8⁺ and macrophages at 21 dpi. Beginning on 28 dpi negatively reacting cells inside larval capsules were also observed. The number of these cells increased from 23.8 to 73.2% at 60 dpi and their identification requires further investigations. The role and the function of all these cells are discussed.

Opis:
The role of glutathione-S-transferase (GST, EC 2.5.1.18) in biochemical host defence in experimental trichinellosis was evaluated. The activity of GST in mouse skeletal muscles was measured during the muscular phase of trichinellosis, starting from the 3rd week post infection (w.p.i.) to the 11th w.p.i. Activity was determined spectrophotometrically by monitoring the formation of thioether (S-2,4-dinitrophenylglutathione) from the reduced form of glutathione and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene used as a substrate and as an example of xenobiotics. The changes in the activity of GST were as follows: an increase in activity starts in the 4th w.p.i., peaks (up to 310% of the normal value) in the 6th w.p.i., decreases in the 8th week and a final, weak rise was observed in week 11. The statistically significant changes in GST activity in this phase of experimental trichinellosis suggest that this enzyme participates in the biochemical defence of the host against Trichinella infection.

The effect of ketotifen on inflammation in the intestine during T. spiralis infection in BALB/c mice was examined. The lack of enteropathy in treated mice was accompanied to affected the size of worms and the number of worms, but did not prevent the retardation of nematodes in the intestine. Fecundity of females in vitro and the number of muscle larvae were not statistically changed after treatment. Ketotifen reduced the number of mast cells and IgA plasma cells in the intestine. As inflammatory influx, epithelial damage and IgA response are related to the action of T cells, ketotifen affected T dependent reactions in the gut of T. spiralis infected mice.
