Opis:
The paper presents the results of a study on mericarps and seed morphology of four taxa occurring in Poland: Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sphondylium and subsp. sibiricum, H. mantegazzianum and H. sosnowskyi. Apart from selected biometric traits we analysed pericarps and seed-coat patterns using a stereoscopic microscope (SM) and a scanning microscope (SEM). Considerable diff erences in the dorsal surface of mericarps were observed, but major structural similarities were found on the ventral surface of mericarps. Pericarp surface diff ers signifi cantly between native and alien taxa in terms of secondary sculpture. The examined seeds were characterised by reticulate primary sculpture with diff erent size and shape of testa cells. The macro- and micromorphological characteristics of the mericarp and seeds may provide valuable additional diagnostic criteria for delimitation of Heracleum and can be used in the identifi cation of fruits and seeds.

Opis:
Achenes morphology in taxa from Potentilla collina s.l. i.e., P. collina Wibel s.s., P. leucopolitana P.J. Müller, P. thyrsiflora Hülsen ex Zimmet., P. thyrsiflora var. isosepala Th. W., P. silesiaca Uechtr. And P. wimanniana Günther and Schummel was examined with stereoscope and scanning electron microscopy. Achenes of these taxa varied slightly in shape, size and colour, while marked differences among them appeared in the surface sculpture and in the dimensions of aril, dorsal ridge and ribs. SEM analyses allowed to distinguish two distinct morphological types of achenes. Type I - with ruminate sculpture and aggregates of some material, various in shape and size, at the surface of partly destroyed epidermal cells covering fruit wall in P. leucopolitana, P. wimanniana and P. thyrsiflora. Type II - with ruminate-reticulate sculpture due to well preserved epidermal cells in P. silesiaca and P. thyrsiflora var. isosepala. The obtained results have supported Błocki’s suggestion to treat P. thyrsiflora var. isosepala as a separate species named P. isosepala. However, similarities in the surface sculpture of achenes in some taxa of P. collina group did not facilitate their classification, therefore this feature may be a valuable taxonomical criterium only in combination with others.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a biometrical study on the leaves of vegetative and generative shoots of Morus alba. Mature leaves were collected from the green areas of Poznań (Poland) city. Leaves from vegetative shoots were collected from 34 sites. Leaves from generative shoots were collected from specimens with blackish purple or purple fruit (13 trees) and with pale yellow to creamy fruit (21 trees). Eleven morphological traits were analysed in the leaves from vegetative and generative shoots, including the petiole and blade. The seven examined features were characterised by low or moderate variability and four features were characterised by high or very high variability. The research revealed slight differences between trees with blackish purple or pale yellow fruit and significant morphological differences between the leaves of vegetative and generative shoots. The article includes descriptions of quantitative features have not been published in Poland. White mulberry leaves (Morus alba) with white and dark fruit did not make clearly separated groups. Therefore, they should be treated as morphotype of cultivars rather than a distinct taxonomic rank.

Opis:
The morphology and anatomy of generative organs of Salsola kali ssp. ruthenica was examined in detail using the light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The whole flowers, fruits and their parts (pistil, stamens, sepals, embryo, seed) were observed in different developmental stages. In the first stage (June), flower buds were closed. In the second stage (August), flowers were ready for pollination/fertilization. In the third stage (September), fruits were mature. Additionally, the anatomical and morphological structure of sepals was observed by means of LM and SEM. Thanks to the transverse and longitudinal semi-sections through sepals, the first phase of wing formation was recorded by SEM. The appearance of stomata in the epidermal cells of sepals above the forming wings was very interesting, too. The stomata were observed also in mature fruits.
