    Nowadays it is possible to identify a series of parameters that contribute to defining the liveability characteristics of a public space. It is important that all the parameters are satisfied because they are elements that interfere with each other. Morphological characteristics, which partly contribute to defining the environmental performance of the space, together with the functional characteristics of the area, determined by the presence of activities, must be assessed together; however, evaluating them not only in qualitative but also in quantitative terms is not always easy to do. The paper presents a way to evaluate this characteristic of urban space through examples.

    The subject of the research covers the problem of morphological changes in former villages incorporated into the city on the example of Łódź. The first objective of the article is to analyse the urban development of the city, taking into account the territorial changes and incorporation of villages. The second objective includes the analysis of morphological changes in former villages that have taken place after their incorporation into the city since the mid-twentieth century. The study required analysis of source materials in the form of preserved historical maps and today’s plans, legal acts, planning documents and chosen statistical data. The analysis of changes in the spatial structure of villages incorporated into the city was possible mainly thanks to the retrogressive, as well as progressive method. The article also uses the method of morphological analysis of the city plan based on the Conzenian tradition of urban morphology. The study applies the typology of rural settlement patterns, taking into account the issue of morphological changes and relics of morphological features from the period before the incorporation into the city. It is characteristic that the transformation process of rural settlement patterns took place in different ways and with various intensity depending mostly on the scale of urbanisation processes. It was possible to distinguish the orthomorphic transformations, where all spatial modifications were mainly additions and did not destroy the morphogenetic core, so the former layouts have been preserved almost completely, semi-metamorphic transformations, where spatial reorganisation was considerable, but not total, and clear relics of the historical rural settlement pattern have been saved, and metamorphic transformations, in which almost all elements of the former morphological structure have been completely erased and the former layouts have been totally changed.

    The aim of the article is to assess Poznań’s urban sprawl from the perspective of the morphology of space and financial situation of suburban households. The morphological assessment uses a method based on two grids of squares with a side: 1 km, 500 m; and data on the location of buildings from CCGCD. On the other hand, the assessment of households was carried out on the basis of the CSO Household Budget database. The results of the research indicate that the analyzed communes in the Poznań area are characterized by a moderate degree of disorder in the spatial structure. There are no communes with a completely compact specificity, there are also no communes with an absolutely high degree of spatial disorder. Households causing urban sprawl in Poznań are entities that incur moderate financial losses in order to maximize their housing preferences.
    Celem artykułu jest ocena urban sprawl Poznania z perspektywy morfologii przestrzeni oraz sytuacji finansowej podmiejskich gospodarstw domowych. Ocena morfologiczna wykorzystuje metodę opartą na dwóch siatkach kwadratów o boku: 1 km, 500 m oraz danych o lokalizacji zabudowy z GUGiK. Natomiast ocena gospodarstw domowych przeprowadzona została w oparciu o bazę Budżetów Gospodarstw Domowych GUS. Rezultaty badań wskazują, że analizowane gminy na obszarze poznańskim charakteryzują się umiarkowanym stopniem bezładu struktury przestrzennej. Brak jest gmin o specyfice całkowicie zwartej, brak jest również gmin o bezwzględnie wysokim stopniu bezładu przestrzennego. Gospodarstwa powodujące urban sprawl Poznania to jednostki, które dla maksymalizacji preferencji mieszkaniowych ponoszą umiarkowane straty finansowe.
