The paper focuses on the involvement of Polish migrants in the Scottish Independence Referendum of 2014. Based on the available evidence, it argues that political apathy and the alienation of migrants in their receiving countries should not be taken for granted. Exempli-fied by the active stance of the “Scottish” Poles, the paper demonstrates that the migrant groups’ political participation may depend on a country-specific nexus of factors to do with discursive construction of both their economic interests and civic belonging.

The article provides an overview of the dynamics of migration from Poland to Germany and the socio-demographic characteristics of Polish community. It begins with the history of migration processes between the two countries, with special focus on the most important periods (including post-accession migration). A comparison between the Polish community and the entire migrant community in Germany is conducted as well.

Often in themigration literature transnational relations ofmigrants and their institutions with the sending country are described as important factor strengthening or improving the situation of the migrants in the receiving country. The aim of the paper is to empirically prove that in some of the cases the set of multiple conditions affecting immigrant organizations may have the opposite effect. The example of Polish organizations in Germany shows that transnationalization may have as a consequence the limiting, and the degradation of immigrant organizations standing. The four analyzed factors determining the situation of Polish immigrant associational in Germany: the characteristics of immigrant group, the policy of the receiving country towards immigration and IOs, the diaspora policy of the sending country, as well as the bilateral relations between the sending and receiving country together constitute a combination that has a strong negative effect on the functioning of Polish organizations. This all produces an impression of falling into the “trap of transnationalism.”

Opis:
Kazakh Poles arriving in Poland through the repatriation program still feel a close bond with the country where they were born, and for many of them it is an integral part of their daily existence. Maintaining regular contacts with Kazakhstan (direct or mediated by modern means of communication) and the family left there exerts a constant impact on the repatriates, and shapes their way of life. In this article, I attempt to highlight the actions or lifestyles that depend on this relationship, captured in the course of field research, using the categories of the theory of transnationality in the context of research on migration movements. By placing these activities and analysing them within the trans-local social network operating at various levels, I present a number of factors stimulating and hindering transnational activities. One of the outcomes of these deliberations is diagnosis of how the repatriates’ two-culture potential is put to use.

The paper looks at the selected issues related to the Polish migrants in Iceland. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the number of the Polish migrants there grew nearly tenfold and exceeded 17,000 in 2018. As a result, Poles are the most numerous national minority in Iceland. The author discusses demographics, including size of the community and its distribution, migration patterns, occupational careers and position in the labour market, integration and activities of Polish associations, both formal and informal ones.

The article presents the problem of migration and assimilation of newcomers in the countries of residence. One of the main reasons for migration are economic and social considerations, this applies to both non-European arrivals and internal migration. The aim of this study, conducted by scholars from Norway and Poland, is to compare systemic solutions both within the social legislation and the functioning of the labor market with respect to Poles and Ukrainians, confronting them with existing barriers regarding the possibility of assimilation and obstacles related to the transformation of economic into settlement migration. The methodological and theoretical basis of the team’s research is comparative methods, including comparative politics. The research on immigrants was conducted using both quantitative methods - statistical and qualitative data analysis - and research using the in-depth interview method. Poles and Ukrainians are not at the same stage of formal migration due to the formal plane. According to the analysis, Ukrainians have much greater opportunities for actual assimilation than Poles in Norway. Smaller cultural differences and linguistic barriers to the Ukrainians in Poland are conducive to this process. If the state and Polish society take advantage of this situation and enable the settlement of Ukrainians and make their job offers more attractive, there is a chance that they will fill the emerging demographic gap. It would be for the benefit of both societies.

The article looks at the origins and scale of migration of Poles to the Republic of Ireland and the characteristics of migrants in light of various statistical data. It outlines the characteristics of the Polish population in Ireland on the basis of 2016 census, taking into account the main directions of changes in relation to previous censuses. Polish immigrants, very few in Ireland before 2004, have since become the largest group of non-Irish nationals, stable in size and spread all over the country. Despite its size and multiple ties to Ireland such as the growing number of Polish-Irish citizens and the increasing share of homeowners, it is argued that the Polish community has limited visibility and impact on the Irish society and politics. The author also points out the housing crisis and Brexit-related risks as important challenges for the Polish community.

The article looks at the people of Polish descent that have arrived in Poland from Ukraine in 2015 in the aftermath of the war in Donbass. The author discusses two semi-annual adaptation programmes involving the Poles and their family members. The experience gained from these adaptation programmes was then used in order to amend the Repatriation Act and, as a result, to improve the performance of repatriation scheme. The article is based on the research conducted among the evacuees in 2017, which consisted of in-depth interviews with the members of 19 families which settled in Poland.

This paper focuses on an early Polish family life in Winnipeg. The family often served as a mechanism to reduce a sense of dislocation and to facilitate immigrants' adaptation. The family was also the primary economic unit. The family relations were affected by gender. Both immigrant men and women found themselves reconsidering traditional roles. Somehow immigration tested their family roles in new ways.

The main aim of the article is to present the situation of Polish migrants in the United Kingdom in the face of regulations related to Brexit. The main research is focused on the Polish community, its features and structure. The author analyzed new living conditions of Poles in Great Britain. Poles are concerned about the change in the economic and political situation. The functioning in a multicultural country, the continuous process of acquiring a foreign reality, seeking a balance between established values, customs and traditions, and finding a new home – fills them with fear and anxiety.
Osią przewodnią artykułu jest ukazanie sytuacji polskich migrantów w Wielkiej Brytanii w obliczu regulacji związanych z brexitem. Uwaga badawcza została skupiona na społeczności polskiej, jej cechach i strukturze. Analizie poddano nowe warunki życia, w jakich znaleźli się Polacy. Funkcjonowanie w wielokulturowym państwie, zmiana sytuacji ekonomiczno-politycznej, a także ciągły proces przyswajania obcej rzeczywistości i poszukiwanie równowagi pomiędzy utrwalonymi wartościami, zwyczajami i tradycjami a odnalezieniem się w nowym domu napawa ich lękiem i niepokojem.

This article reviews the immigration (repatriation, impatriation) of people of the Polish descent repatriated from the former Soviet Union and their adaptation process in Poland. In the first section, the author introduces methodological challenges related to definitions of the repatriation process. The second section presents the legal background of the repatriation. Next, the author discusses the repatriation process in the light of empirical data. In conclusion, some recommendations for changes in law and policy are given.

W pierwszej części artykułu autorka opisuje wzajemne relacje pomiędzy emigrantami, którzy przybyli do Wielkiej Brytanii w różnym czasie. Charakteryzując poszczególne fale emigracyjne wskazuje na złożoność polskiego środowiska w tym kraju. W drugiej części artykułu autorka prezentuje wyniki badań własnych przeprowadzonych wśród polskich studentów studiujących za granicą oraz sposób, w jaki budują swoje relacje z innymi członkami emigracji poakcesyjnej. Na podstawie analizy przypadków wskazuje trzy typy relacji tj.: dążenie do separacji od wszystkich Polaków, dążenie do separacji od emigrantów zarobkowych i nawiązywanie relacji tylko z wybranymi Polakami – innymi studentami; nawiązywanie relacji ze wszystkimi rodakami w myśl przekonania o „naturalnej więzi” pomiędzy członkami tego samego narodu
In the first part of the article, the author describes internal relationships among Polish emigrants who came to the United Kingdom in different historical periods. Characterizing the waves of migration indicates the complexity of Polish community in this country. In the second part of the article, the author presents the results of the research conducted among Polish students studying abroad and the way how they build their relationships with other members of the post-accession emigrants. There are presented the types of relationships, based on the research results: the seeking the separation from the Poles, the seeking the separation from economic emigrants and building relationships only with chosen Poles – other students, building relationships with all countrymen in belief of the “natural bond” between members of the same nation.

In the context of the contemporary wave of migration from Poland to Norway and the growing interest in research on child migrants, this article focuses on children’s experiences, their opinions, and the practices by which Polish migrant children growing up in Norway engage in school life in their receiving country. School integration is examined through 32 semi-structured interviews with the children aged 6 to 13, born in Poland and living permanently in Norway. In this article, migrant children are treated as experts on their school integration. Such an approach will help us to better understand their needs, and thus to develop an appropriate educational policy in Norway based on migrant children’s experiences and their opinions about their school life. The aim of this article’s is to fill the knowledge gap pertaining to the integration of Polish children in Norway, seen from the missing perspective of the children themselves. The argumentation is based on the assumption that Polish children in Norway are “temporarily visible”. When a migrant child does not manage to adapt to the school environment, regardless of the support he or she receives from school, family and peers, then the costs of inclusion and integration increase and the difficulties multiply.
W kontekście współczesnej fali emigracji z Polski do Norwegii oaz rosnącego zainteresowania badaniami z dziećmi migrantami, artykuł skupia się na doświadczeniach, opiniach i praktykach, przez które polskie dzieci dorastające w Norwegii włączają się w życie szkolne w tym kraju przyjmującym. Analiza integracji szkolnej opiera się na 30 pół-ustrukturyzowanych wywiadach z dziećmi w wieku 6 do 13 lat, urodzonymi w Polsce i mieszkającymi na stałe w Norwegii. Dzieci migrantów będę traktować jako ekspertów w dziedzinie swojej integracji szkolnej. Taka perspektywa przyczyni się do lepszego zrozumienia ich potrzeb, a tym samym do tworzenia adekwatnej polityki edukacyjnej w Norwegii, bazującej na doświadczeniach i opiniach dzieci migrantów na temat ich życia szkolnego. Celem artykułu jest uzupełnienie niedostatku wiedzy na temat integracji szkolnej polskich dzieci w Norwegii z punktu widzenia dzieci. Wiodącą tezą artykułu jest twierdzenie, że dzieci polskich imigrantów są „tymczasowo widoczne” w norweskiej szkole. Jeśli dziecko migrant nie podejmie wysiłków, aby przystosować się do środowiska szkolnego, bez względu na wsparcie które otrzymuje od szkoły, rodziny oraz rówieśników, to wraz z upływem czasu koszty integracji wzrosną i stanie się ona trudniejsza.

Artykuł jest próbą zilustrowania współczesnych relacji ekonomicznych Polski z Nową Zelandią, jak również przewidywanego rozwoju tejże współpracy w przyszłości. Głównym czynnikiem rozbudowy organizacji biznesowych oraz przedsiębiorstw operujących między tak dalekimi od siebie państwami jest wzmożona migracja Polaków. Stosunki dyplomatyczne łączące Warszawę z Wellington zostały zbudowane na kanwie przyjaznych relacji przedwojennych, a w głównej mierze, przyjęcia na nowozelandzkie terytorium polskich sierot - „Dzieci z Pahiatua”. Oba państwa postrzegają siebie nawzajem jako godnego zaufania partnera, przedstawiciela odpowiednio Europy Centralnej oraz Pacyfiku Południowego. Stąd współpraca bilateralna ma także szansę na objęcie całego partnerskiego regionu. Z każdym rokiem współczynnik Polaków decydujących się na wyjazd tymczasowy bądź stały do Nowej Zelandii rośnie, co jest powodowane zacieśnianiem więzi prawnych poprzez trwożenie instrumentów pomocowych oraz programów współpracy.
The article is an attempt to illustrate contemporary economic relations between Poland and New Zealand, as well as the anticipated development of this cooperation in the future. The main factor enabling the business organizations and enterprises operation between such far-away countries is indeed the increased migration of Poles. Diplomatic relations between Warsaw and Wellington were built on the basis of friendly pre-war contacts, and primarily the reception of “Pahiatua Children”, the Polish orphans on the New Zealand territory. Both states perceive one another as trustworthy partners, representatives of the Central Europe and the South Pacific respectively. Therefore bilateral cooperation also has a chance to cover the entire partner region. With each passing year, the rate of Poles deciding on a temporary or permanent visit to New Zealand is growing, which is caused by bringing closer legal ties through establishing aid instruments and cooperation schemes.
