    Opis:
    Metaphors as a type of euphemism formation in thematic group of Russian Polish and English toilet euphemisms are considered. Different types of metaphorical euphemisms are investigated. The analysis demonstrates common devices in euphemism formation and common conceptual and linguistic aspects of euphemisation in Russian, Polish and English. Common devices and large number of interlingual euphemisms in the languages may justify the universal character of the cognitive basis of the nominative language area.

    In this paper we shall discuss the semantics of the lexical items which have been employed with reference to nakedness. The theoretical framework adopted in this article is that of cognitive linguistics, whose emergence in the second half of the 20th century gave a new impetus to semantic research. In particular, we shall discuss the words which denoted nakedness in the past, but which fell into oblivion (e.g. unbehelod, nscrȳdd), we shall also focus on the similes (e.g. as naked as a jaybird, naked as a robin, naked as a worm, naked as a needle) as well as the phrases and idioms (e.g. mother naked, belly naked, in the buff, in stag, in the altogether, in the nude, in one’s birthday suit, in a state of nature, in the raw) which pertain to the conceptual category NAKEDNESS. Furthermore, we attempt to answer the following research questions: (1) What processes are the most productive in terms of creating new synonyms of nakedness? (2) How many metaphorical schemas can be formulated on the basis of the analysis? (3) How many and which conceptual domains play a crucial role in the rise of the new lexical items whose senses are connected with the conceptual category NAKEDNESS?

    The paper examines verbs and verbal expressions for ‘die’ employed in Middle English chronicles. As one of the aims is to find out to what extent the distribution of euphemistic and non-euphemistic verbs and verbal expressions denoting this sense was determined stylistically, both prose and verse works are analyzed, i.e. The Peterborough chronicle 1070–1154, The Brut, or the chronicles of England, Layamon’s Brut, and The anonymous short English metrical chronicle. The textual distribution of the verbs is presented, including both numerical data and a synopsized contextual analysis of particular verbs and expressions

    Artykuł przedstawia obraz śmierci odczytany z języka opowiadań Jana Grzegorczyka zawartych w zbiorze Niebo dla akrobaty. Autor, podejmując problematykę odchodzenia, wpisuje się w ciąg literackich sposobów mówienia o śmierci. Zawarta w opowiadaniach wizja śmierci zgodna jest z jej postrzeganiem w perspektywie porządku chrześcijańskiego. Jest bowiem drogą, przejściem do życia po życiu ziemskim, stanowi nieodłączny element ludzkiego życia, uniwersalny i niezmienny. Jej obraz Grzegorczyk przedstawia za pomocą różnorodnych środków językowych, wśród których najczęstsze są metafory i metonimie, służące również swoistej eufemizacji i tabuizacji śmierci. Przedstawiając perspektywę chrześcijańską, autor nie stroni od aksjologizacji śmierci, pokazując, iż jej wartościowanie wiąże się z waloryzacją dokonywaną przez postrzegający lub doświadczający podmiot. Znak wartości śmierci z perspektywy transcendentnej jest bowiem zawsze dodatni. Ukazując wielorakie oblicze śmierci, Jan Grzegorczyk pokazuje, iż jej pełen obraz wykracza poza współczesne postrzeganie śmierci – nie jest ona bowiem tylko cielesnym doświadczeniem, umieraniem, rozpadem, lecz również duchowym i transcendentnym, stawiającym człowieka wobec sacrum.
    The article describes the linguistic image of death presented in the book by Jan Grzegorczyk Niebo dla akrobaty. The image of death described is in line with its perception in Christianity. Jan Grzegorczyk describes death as a way, passage from life in the earth to life after earthly life that is an inseparable element of human life. The author uses different linguistic ways of describing death and talking about it. Among them there are: metaphors, metonymies, euphemisms and different ways of expressing the taboo in language. Grzegorczyk also presents an evaluation of death that depends on the observer or the dying person. This transcendental way of perceiving death reveals its positive meaning. Jan Grzegorczyk also highlights the difference between the understanding of death today, and the Christian vision of it. Death is not only the decay of the human body, but also it is the moment of passage to God, it is a transcendental experience that places everybody in front of the sacrum.
