Opis:
An analytical approach is proposed for studying the elastic-plastic behavior of short fiber reinforced metal matrix composites under tensile loading. In the proposed research, a micro- mechanical approach is employed considering an axi-symmetric unit cell including one fiber and the surrounding matrix. First, the governing equations and the boundary conditions are derived and the elastic solution is obtained based on some shear lag type methods. Since under normal loading conditions and according to the fiber material characteristics the me- tal matrix undergoes plastic deformation, while the fiber remains within the elastic region, a plastic deformation is obtained for the matrix under each small tensile loading step. Then, the elastic-plastic stress transfer behavior of the composite is studied considering this plastic deformation. The results are finally compared with the numerical results obtained from the FE analysis of the considered micromechanical model.

Opis:
Nowadays, the global industries producing mechanical components are moving towards the usage of composites to reduce weight at the same time without compromising with characteristics of the material being used. This new combination of material provides specific desired properties when combined with various reinforcement materials like SiC, B4C, Al2O3, MgO etc., It is widely used in various industries like aerospace, automobile and marine industries. This property specific tailorable metal matrix composite with Al7075 as the base material can be fabricated using various techniques such as stir casting, high end ball milling, ultrasonic assisted casting, powder metallurgy, squeeze casting friction stir casting etc., out of which stir casting method is preferred by many researchers as stir casting method is seen to provide better distribution of reinforcement particles throughout the metal matrix. It is evident from the research of various authors that when the base material Al7075 is reinforced with the above-mentioned ceramic, it is found that there is a decrease in density and increase in hardness, compressive strength and wear resistance. Here, both physical and mechanical behaviour of aluminium reinforced composites with the effect of the particle size changes, effects after reinforcement and other processing and fabrication methods have been discussed.

Current work attempts to fabricate aluminium alloy AA2219 metal matrix composite (AMC) reinforced with natural bio-based sea shell powder (SSP) which is a ceramic material, in view of improving the mechanical and tribological properties. SSP was characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to assess its chemical constituents and particle size. Stir casting route was adopted for fabricating AMCs reinforced with 1, 2 and 3 wt.% of SSP. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) was used to analyse the formation of secondary elements during casting and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used analyze the surface morphology of the composite specimen before and after tribological tests. Hardness, Compressive strength and tribological properties were evaluated using appropriate tests and corresponding ASTM standards. Characterization methods revealed that the formation of secondary elements was very low at 3 wt.% of SSP when compared with other compositions. Hardness and compressive strength was found to be maximum for 3 wt.% of SSP while the specific wear rate and coefficient of friction values were found to be lesser for the same composite when compared with the unreinforced alloy and were on par with the AA2219 composites containing synthetic reinforcements.

A conventional powder metallurgy method (PM) was used to produce Al-SiC and Al4Cu alloy matrix composites with 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 wt% of SiC particles. Two different sizes of the reinforcing phase particles were applied to determine their effect on composite microstructure. The sintering process was carried out at 600°C under nitrogen atmosphere, and its consequence was the appearance of aluminium nitrides in composite microstructure acting as an additional strengthening phase. The composites were next re-pressed and re-sintered (2p2s) under the same conditions. The main aim of this article was to examine the microstructure of the SiC reinforced Al and Al4Cu alloy matrix composites. To achieve this goal and characterize the sintered materials, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used.

Opis:
In this paper it is stated, that a set of quality features of metal matrix composite castings differs from the same set for castings of classic materials, although some features are common for both of these material groups. These features (pertaining to a set of quality characteristics of composite castings) have been named as specific, they have not been determined yet and a description of material quality should be performed (according to the qualitology) on a principle of description of quality characteristics of this product. Therefore, this set of features has been determined. It was proposed to add the following characteristics to the set of specific features of composite castings quality: matrix material, reinforcement material, binding between components and porosity of the composite casting. In this set a sub-set of quality characteristics of composite castings was also determined.
Zaproponowano, aby do zbioru specyficznych cech jakości odlewów kompozytowych zaliczyć: materiał osnowy, materiał zbrojenia, połączenie pomiędzy komponentami i porowatość odlewu kompozytowego. W zbiorze tym określono również podzbiór cech jakości odlewów kompozytowych.

This paper describes metal matrix composites reinforced with particles and with dispersion, and presents the most important materials used as a reinforcement of the metal matrix. A new material, called volcanic tuff, that could be used as a strengthening of metal composites has been characterized. The methods of producing metal matrix composites, reinforced of volcanic tuff have been presented. The matrix was made of such materials like copper, iron and stainless steel 316L. The paper presents the microstructure of sintered metal composites with varying degrees of tuff participation. The volume of tuff composites was 5, 15 and 30%. The results of X-ray microanalysis of connections of tuff particles with matrix have also been shown. The results have shown that a suitable tuff processing method and inserting it in an optimal amount results in improvement of some properties of the material such as, softening temperature or porosity. This is shown in the example of copper and tuff composites. Tuff is a material that could be used for reinforcement of metal composites. It has been shown A very good connection of metal matrix and tuff particles has been shown. At the border tuff - metal matrix there were no discontinuities. By using powder metallurgy technology, it is possible to obtain a uniform distribution of ceramic particles in the metal.

The article presents the results of tests carried out on the manufactured composite materials based on a two-phase NiAl/Ni3Al matrix, which was enriched with the addition of TiB2 ceramic particles added in an amount of 4 and 7 vol%. The resulting mixtures were sintered by the High Pressure High Temperature (HP-HT) process. The results were compared to the results obtained for the sole matrix material produced under the same conditions. It has been shown that, at a lower density, the addition of reinforcing particles increases the composite hardness, Young’s modulus and resistance to frictional wear. However, higher addition of TiB2 (7 vol%) was observed to yield less satisfactory results, and despite higher hardness and lower density caused a decrease in other properties tested. The produced materials were characterized by a compact and highly differentiated microstructure free from any noticeable cracks and pores.

Wear resistance of TiC-cast steel metal matrix composite has been investigated. Composites were obtained with SHSB method known as SHS synthesis during casting. It has been shown the differences in wear between composite and base cast steel. The Miller slurry machine test were used to determine wear loss of the specimens. The slurry was composed of SiC and water. The worn surface of specimens after test, were studied by SEM. Experimental observation has shown that surface of composite zone is not homogenous and consist the matrix lakes. Microscopic observations revealed the long grooves with SiC particles indented in the base alloy area, and spalling pits in the composite area. Due to the presence of TiC carbides on composite layer, specimens with TiC reinforced cast steel exhibited higher abrasion resistance. The wear of TiC reinforced cast steel mechanism was initially by wearing of soft matrix and in second stage by polishing and spalling of TiC. Summary weight loss after 16hr test was 0,14÷0,23 g for composite specimens and 0,90 g for base steel.

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are still scarcely described due to various combinations of used materials and a wide array of technologies. Applying the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method to describe the quality of metal composite castings may contribute to eliminating specific (characteristic only to these materials) defects. This part of the analysis determines the criticality numbers, meaning the frequency of a given failure, detectability level and significance of a given failure to the group of specific composite casting failures. It contributes to establishing the priority number (P), which is a measure used to assess risk, a notion essential in discussing quality in a composite casting.

Opis:
Aluminium based metal matrix composites are well known for their good wear resistance, high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They have been applied in the aerospace, military and, especially, in the automotive industries. This paper presents the results of tests with regard to the application of a mixture of particles in aluminium matrix (AlCu2SiMn) composites where a mixture of SiC ceramic particles was used. The aim of the research was to determine the tribological properties as well as the phenomena and mechanisms which accompany the tribological wear of composites under dry friction conditions. The tribological investigations were conducted on a pin-on-block tester. The results of the tests show the composite obtained can be applied for sliding elements. Based on microscopic examinations and profilometry of the composites AlCu2SiMn+SiC surfaces at interaction the relationship between the size of reinforcing particles and the geometry of the surface layer of the composite was described. The study made it possible to develop a model of tribological wear of composites depending on the size of reinforcing particles.

Purpose This paper presents an overview on some ceramic materials capable of achieving in-situ reinforcements in Al/Al-alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs) during laser processing. It also presents perspective on further exploitation of the in-situ reinforcement capabilities for high quality MMCs feedstock material development. Design/methodology/approach The approach utilized in writing this paper encompasses the review of relevant literature on additive manufacturing (AM) of MMCs. Findings It is widely accepted that the in-situ reinforcement approach has proven to be more advantageous than the ex-situ approach. Though there are still some challenges like the formation of detremental phases and the evaporation of low melting temperature elements, the in-situ reinforcement approach can be used to tailor design composite powder feedstock materials for the AM of MMCs. The preprocessing or tailor-designing in-situ metal matrix composite powder before laser melting into desired components holds more promises for metal additive manufacturing. Practical implications The need for the development of MMCs powder feedstock that can be directly fabricated using suitable AM technique without prior powder processing like blending or mechanical alloying has not yet been addressed Therefore, having a pre-processed in-situ reinforced MMC feedstock powder can encourage easy fabrication of MMC and other advantages of AM technologies powder recycling. Originality/value The idea explained in this article is relevant to materials development for AM processing of metal matrix composite. This paper has pointed out future trends for MMCs materials feedstock powder development and new ideas for further exploitation of MMCs and AM technologies. The advantages of tailor-designing composite powders other than merely mixing them has been emphasized.

Opis:
The paper presents applications of a new theory of the representative volume element (RVE) based on the Mityushev- Eisenstein-Rayleigh sums (M-sums) to describe particle-reinforced composites. This theory is applied to study F3K.10S metal matrix composites reinforced SiC particles. The most important M-sum e2 is calculated for the initial state as e2 = -0.00206281. This shows considerable heterogeneity of distribution of reinforcing particles and its anisotropic properties. Further, the results are compared with the results obtained by the FSP. It is established that the use of a single FSP process causes a significant change in the distribution of particles reinforcing phase when the value e2 becomes 3.19488. It follows from Mityushev’s theory that e2=π corresponds to isotropic distributions. The article confirms that the new RVE theory resolves the problem of the constructive pure geometrical description of the properties of composites. Further work requires the optimization and extension of the theory to three-dimensional models.
