    Opis:
    The present study analyses media coverage of the Egyptian revolution (2011-2015). We use the corpus-assisted discourse (CADS) approach to examine how Arabic and English media covered the 2011 protests in Egypt. Adapting corpus techniques and the discursive news values analysis (DNVA) approach, We analyse a bilingual (Arabic and English) corpus of news reports in Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya), as well as the Western written media in English (BBC and CNN). This method helps to uncover differences and similarities between the three media categories in terms of collocations’ categories, frequency distribution, and story content. The results suggest several inconsistencies in the frequency distribution along with many similarities in the collocations categories, story contents and the news values, based mainly on a negative ideology that focuses on the unstable political life and the violent social protests, which manipulates the audience and affects their understanding of the news.

    Opis:
    According to the World Health Organization, older people and people with preexisting medical conditions appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the COVID-19 virus (World Health Organization 2020). A few journalists (Arielle 2020, Held 2020) have pointed out that in light of the current COVID-19 crisis, vulnerable populations such as elderly people, people with disabilities, and people with preexisting medical conditions have been talked about as if they were “disposable” or “expendable”. Therefore, this study will attempt to examine how vulnerable populations are perceived by Polish public in the context of the global COVID-19 pandemy. In order to achieve that, I will analyze, by the means of critical discourse analysis, comment sections below online articles and editorials covering the topic of the COVID-19 virus on the popular Polish portal Gazeta.pl. In order to narrow down the scope of this study I will only focus on those articles and comments that were published in the week following March 4th 2020 when the first COVID-19 case in Poland was officially confirmed. I believe that this preliminary study will provide useful data for assessing public attitudes toward vulnerable people in times of crisis.

    Artykuł zawiera wyniki krytycznej analizy struktury argumentacyjnej artykułów prasowych na temat przemowy papieża Franciszka o uchodźcach w wiodących dziennikach publikowanych w trzech krajach: Polsce, Hiszpanii i W ielkiej Brytanii. Zgodnie z przewidywaniami, analiza ujawniła tendencyjność i błędy logiczne w argumentacji przeciwko przyjmowaniu uchodźców w prasie tabloidowej, a z drugiej strony poparcie dla przyjmowania uchodźców w E uropie we wszystkich analizowanych artykułach w dziennikach opiniotwórczych. Zaskakującym wynikiem analizy tych ostatnich była natomiast prawie całkowita identyczność argumentacji, jak również jej niedostateczność, szczególnie w porównaniu z argumentacją tabloidu. Żaden z analizowanych artykułów nie przedstawia tematu z punktu widzenia uchodźców. Biorąc pod uwagę wpływ mediów na wszystkie aspekty życia społecznego, generowanie wiedzy, wzbudzanie emocji i budowanie tożsamości, niniejszy artykuł omawia ważkie konsekwencje dyskursu nacechowanego uprzedzeniami rasowymi na poziomie kognitywnym, afektywnym i behawioralnym, a także rozważa kwestię obniżenia standardów dziennikarskich.
    This article explores the critical dimension of news coverage of Pope Francis’s speech on refugees in market-leading newspapers from three countries — Spain, Poland and the UK — using Critical Discourse Analysis methods. As hypothesised, it revealed bias and fallaciousness in the arguments against refugees in the tabloid press. The daily broadsheets’ news articles from the three countries expressed the same positive stance towards accommodating refugees in Europe, which was to be expected. Surprisingly, though, their argumentation was almost identical, weak and scarce, especially when compared to tabloid argumentation on the topic. None of the news articles presented the issue from the point of view of refugees. Given the influence of media discourse, this study discusses important, real-life implications of racially biased discourse on the cognitive, affective and behavioural levels.

    Artykuł prezentuje sposób interpretowania przekazu medialnego z wykorzystaniem krytycznej analizy dyskursu (KAD). Na początku zostały wyjaśnione najważniejsze pojęcia: retoryka, perswazja, krytyczna analiza dyskursu. W dalszej części została przedstawiona teoria komunikowania masowego i specyfi ka języka w Internecie. Badania własne polegały na analizie dyskursu medialnego prezentowanego na stronach: Onet i wPolityce w dniu 06.11.2012 r., czyli w przeddzień wyborów na prezydenta Stanów Zjednoczonych. Metoda KAD pozwoliła wskazać specyfi kę przekazów, zastosowane elementy języka i sposób ujęcia tematu pod względem kryterium wartości informacyjnej. Wnioski pokazują, że przekaz nie spełniał wszystkich jej kryteriów.
    This article shows a way of interpreting media transmission by using critical discourse analysis (CDA). The article starts by explaining the most important words: rhetoric, persuasion, critical discourse analysis. Next, it presents the the mass communication theory and specifi c language in the Internet. My own study is based on an analysis of media discourse presented on websites: Onet, wPolityce on 06.11.2012 – the day before the election for president of the Unites States. CDA allows us to identify a specifi c message, language elements and treatment of the subject in terms of criterion for information. The conclusion shows that media transmission does not satisfy all the criteria for this value.
