    The subject of the analyses presented in the article is the problem of how Biblical texts answer the question about a man's attitude towards winning, accumulating and using riches. Starting from (1) the Old Testament vision, through (2) the meaning of Christ's utterances that are contained in the Gospel, and ending with the message in the Acts and the Epistles, the author presents the biblical assumptions of moral attitudes towards material goods. The discussion is concluded with (3) an attempt to indicate ethical implications resulting from the Holy Scriptures' attitude towards worldly goods.

    Niniejszy artykuł jest refl eksją profesora ekonomii nad sposobem zarządzania parafiami w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej. Stanowi przyczynek do rozwoju nowoczesnej, katolickiej teorii ekonomii, zarządzania i fi nansów. Podstawę jej prezentacji stanowi zarysowana blisko 60 lat temu przez Konferencję Katolickich Biskupów Stanów Zjednoczonych koncepcja kościelnego włodarzowania (stewardship), która odwołuje się zarówno do Biblii, jak i do społecznego nauczania Kościoła. Jest to pewna teoria ekonomii, fi nansowania i zarządzania na poziomie parafi i i diecezji. Istota jej polega na włączeniu w życie Kościoła tysięcy wolontariuszy zainspirowanych do działania opisaną tu koncepcją kościelnego włodarzowania. Jest to pierwsza część opracowania. Druga ukaże się w kolejnym tomie czasopisma.
    The paper is a refl ection by a professor of economics on parish management in the United States of North America. It is meant as a contribution to the development of a modern Catholic theory of economics, management and fi nances. The presented considerations are based on the notion of Church stewardship which refers both to the Bible and the social teaching of the Church. It is a theory of economics, finances and management on the level of the parish and the diocese. Essentially, it consists in engaging thousands of volunteers in the life of the Church who are inspired in their activity by the aforementioned idea of Church stewardship. This is the fi rst part of the study. The second part will appear in the next volume of the journal.

    Opis:
    This article deals with manual labour in the life of monks as taught by St. Augustine in his treatise De opere monachorum. It describes the social context of the theme with particular reference to the situation in monastic communities of Carthage. Many monks in St. Augustine’s time were against manual labour. The article presents the structure of the Saint’s argumentation. St. Augustine clearly was in favour of the manual work of monks -and indirectly also of that of all Christians. The article analyses his exegesis of two Biblical texts (Mt 6:25-34 and 2Thess 3:10) that explain the need and beauty of work for daily spiritual growth. This is shown primarily on the basis of the teaching and example of the Apostle St. Paul, who was employed in various ways. Then the position of St. Augustine is discussed, according to whom the working monk gains the means of his support, cooperates with the Creator and continues His creative achievement. Work that allows the monk to attain some profit in temporal life and maintains the necessary equilibrium between the needs of the body and soul is shown above all to be a means for the attaining of the reward of eternal life. The monk, however, may be dispensed of manual labour, in part or even totally, in view of pastoral ministry, which plays a primary role in his vocation and mission.
