Opis:
The objective of this study, undertaken in the Mato Grosso State, Southern Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, was to gain an understanding of what the Apiaká indigenous know of the mammals of natural occurrence in their territory. Open and semi-structured interviews were utilized. Twelve indigenous of both genres and different ages were interviewed. The interviewees mentioned 36 different mammalian species and they showed wide ecological knowledge regarding these animals. Moreover, oral transmission of knowledge occurs across the generations.

Opis:
Repellent usage against rodents is almost not provided anymore. Permission to use many rodent repellent substances under European Union (EU) plant protection regulations has not been renewed in recent years. Some approval for chemical substances have not been renewed due to their toxicological properties, and for some biorational approvals have also not been renewed due to lack of financial support together with other concerns. Some other rodent repellent substances possessing accurate properties in a secondary way have also been withdrawn. Thus, the use of almost ten active substances is now illegal. The lack of support and the resultant orphan use may be explained by the relatively small market and possible business together with the expectations of modern substance application requirements. As a result, the opportunity to consider new biorational substances as candidates is therefore open. Plant based food substances are preferred candidates for plant protection considering their favourable toxicological characteristics. Capsicum oleoresin, a mixture obtained from two spice species (Capsicum annuum and C. frutescens), is one of them with appropriate repellent properties. An application under EU Plant Protection Product regulation has recently been submitted and may become a new repellent for biological control agent against seed predators.

The objective of this study was accomplishes a knowledge survey of the Bororo indigenous on the mammals of natural occurrence in their territory, Meruri village, who is located in the Mato Grosso State, Brazil, in the Savannah biome, and also the relationship of the indigenous with these wild animals. As method for collect the data were used open and semi-structured interviews. Twenty-two indigenous were interviewed, both genres and different ages. The interviewees mentioned 37 species of mammals and they showed wide ecological knowledge regarding these animals. Such relationships are complex, being evidenced a mythical interaction between the man and the elements of nature. The oral transmission of knowledge occurs across generations.

The project “Mammals in the iconography of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut”, initiated by the author in the 2011/2012 season, encompasses a detailed documentation of the animals depicted in various parts of Hatshepsut’s temple in Deir el-Bahari as a prerequisite for in-depth research. The study follows a multi-disciplinary approach within faunal analysis, and is complemented with technological observations on the execution of relief representations from the temple. At this stage of the project, a general taxonomic identification of the animal representations is nearly complete and a further detailed study of each taxon has been undertaken. Both complete animals (mainly mammals for now) and animal raw materials were studied in addition to the contexts and scenes in which they appear.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to discuss the role of pheromones in mammalian breeding. In the process of sexual reproduction parental haploid gametes fuse during fertilization what is the beginninig of a new diploid organism. This type of reproduction is very effective in gene exchange and provides an excellent level of biodiversity. Sexual male-female selection and sexual behavior are, in some part, mediated by pheromones. These are substances secreted from an individual to obtain a change of some behaviors in another individual of the same species, often apart from sexual performance. Often pheromones are described as behavior-altering agents. According to their activity, two distinct types of pheromones are distinguished – releaser pheromones, that elicit immediate response and primer pheromones, that take longer to get a response, causing endocrine changes which influence also reproduction physiology. Attempts are underway to commercially use their synthetic analogues in animals.

Opis:
Paper presents the results of evaluation of the occurrence and population trends of mammals in 23 Polish national parks. Investigation was based on survey carried out among national park field workers. 29 large and medium−sized mammal species were found in Polish national parks. Growth in the populations of beaver Castor fiber, fox Vulpes vulpes, otter Lutra lutra as well as wild boar Sus scrofa were observed. A clear population regression was recognised for muskrat Ondatra zibethicus and brown hare Lepus europaeus.
