    Opis:
    The objective of the study was to determine the size of interest in spending leisure time in forests among the residents of the Podkarpackie Province (south−eastern Poland) and to examine recreational potential of Rzeszów suburban forests. At first, basing on surveys, the demand for leisure in forests among the adult residents of the Podkarpackie Province was assessed. The survey was conducted on the random group of 439 people. Then, the recreational potential of the suburban forests of Rzeszów was assessed using own method. Almost 90% of respondents declared that they spend leisure time in forests. Most of the them rest in forests several times a year (54%), while only 9% respondents does it several times a week. The largest group among people spending their free time in forests is willing to travel up to 20 km to get to a forest. Forests suitable for recreational use cover nearly 56% of the analysed area, Among them 29% are tree stands of high or very high usability. The decrease in usability for recreational purposes predominantly results from the large share of wet habitats and dense understory. The recreational capacity calculated for Rzeszów suburban forests located within 20 km of city administrative limits amount to 1.79 man−hour/ha/day. The presented results indicate that every week 435,000 people may stay in the Podkarpackie Province forests, while approximately 43,000 – in Rzeszów suburban forests. The paper shows that there is a huge interest in spending leisure time in forests among the residents of the Podkarpackie Province, while the calculated recreational potential of Rzeszów suburban forests may be exceeded. Therefore a real risk exists that the forest environment will be damaged, moreover Rzeszów suburban forests are still poorly equipped with recreational facilities. A type of activity that counteracts this disturbing phenomenon is adequate management of recreational traffic and its balanced distribution over the areas that are naturally resistant to damages. It is also necessary to limit recreational utilisation of the forests where the calculated recreational capacity equals 0. Moreover, one should strive to boost recreational capacity of forests by their proper management.

    Opis:
    Forests covered by various forms of nature protection are a popular resting place for the society. The choice of a certain place for the leisure depends not the attractiveness of the area, but also on its availability, the condition of the infrastructure, and on the preferences of tourists. The aim of the research was to determine the significance of the ‘Nad Tanwią’ nature reserve (‘NT’ NR) for tourism and recreational purposes. The following aspects were considered: the motives of arrival, forms of spending free time, frequency of visits and length of stay. The ‘NT’ NR is a landscape reserve with an area of 41.33 ha located in the Józefów Forest District (SE Poland). The research material consisted of the data from questionnaires collected in the survey conducted from May to September 2017 in the ‘NT’ NR. The research covered a group of 341 respondents. For statistical analysis we used Friedman ANOVA (with Davenport’s modification), chi−square function in the logarithmic form (so−called G function), Mann−Whitney and Kruskal−Wallis tests. The visitors most often came to the ‘NT’ NR mainly due to the need to rest (61% of respondents), interesting landscape (57%) and the proximity of the reserve from their place of residence (39%). Most tourists spent time on walks (50% of the time), trips (21%) and cycling (17%). The respondents visited the examined area on average over 11 times, and the average length of their stay was 3 days. Statistically significant differences in the needs and preferences depending on the social characteristics of the respondents were obtained. Inhabitants of the cities declare a greater need for tourism and recreation comparing to the rural residents. The ‘Nad Tanwią’ nature reserve is frequented by local population, therefore their needs in this area should be met. Hence the need for further research is to learn about their preferences in terms of necessary of infrastructure and tourist information. These factors contribute to the greater development of tourism and recreation, and ‘NT’ NR could be an example of a sylvatouristic product of this region.

    Przemiany społeczno-gospodarcze na przestrzeni ostatnich dziesięcioleci spowodowały zmiany w wykorzystaniu rekreacyjnym lasu. Problematykę tych przekształceń podejmował program realizowany w ramach Europejskich Programów Współpracy w Dziedzinie Badań Naukowo-Technicznych COST Action E33 Forest recreation and nature tourism. Artykuł przedstawia współczesne zasady organizacji turystyki i wypoczynku na obszarach leśnych w Europie na podstawie wyników wspomnianego projektu, w którym uczestniczyła autorka. Wydaje się, że wyniki programu mogą zainicjować działania na rzecz poprawy rekreacji na terenach leśnych w Polsce. Do kluczowych zagadnień należą: uwzględnienie nowych trendów społecznych wpływających na zamiany użytkowania lasu, zagospodarowanie rekreacyjne terenów wokół miast zwłaszcza w aspekcie nowych form aktywności, ograniczenie restrykcyjnych działań mających na celu poprawę jakości rekreacji na rzecz tzw. działań miękkich, uzupełnienie edukacji leśników w zakresie planowania rekreacji.
    Socio-economical transition brings changes in recreational use of forests during last 50 years. The subject of these transitions had been analyzed in Cost Action E33 Forest Recreation and Nature Tourism. The article presents rules of recreation management on contemporary social and natural trends as the basis. The outputs of the Action have brought the author (participant of the action) to the conclusion of new tasks for recreation managers in Poland. The most relevant activities are related to new social trends that influence forest use, urban forest management in the aspect of few activities, education of foresters in the field of planning of recreation, limitation of intensive management action and development of soft management action.

The availability of this information was checked through one−to−one questionnaire−based interviews (947 interviews). Moreover, the information sources currently in use and anticipated by respondents were identified. Also, a statistical analysis of responses was performed taking into consideration characteristics of the target group, such as sex, age, place of residence, education level and profession.
