Opis:
Periodically occurring drought is typical for the climate of Poland. In habitats supplied exclusively with rain water, tree stands are frequently exposed to the negative effects of water deficit in the soil. The aim of this study was to examine the water uptake and consumption of two individual Scots pine trees under drought conditions. The trees were located at different positions within the stand and at the time of study were over 150 years old. Soil moisture, availability of soil water and the quantity of water uptake by the individual trees were examined by measuring the water velocity inside the trunks (Thermal Dissipation Probe method). Two periods of intense drought occurred in the summer 2006 only a few days apart. Before the drought, pine No. 1 (dominant) took up 66.7 dm3 water per day and pine No. 2 (co-dominant) took up 52.3 dm3 per day. The observed responses of the examined pines to the first period of drought were similar: the low soil water content resulted in a suppression of water uptake in both trees. After the end of the drought period however, the recovery responses of the two trees were different. Pine No. 1 resumed water uptake at values similar to those before the drought. Pine No. 2 on the other hand did not resume water uptake. We conclude that in case of this second tree the vegetative season possibly ended already at the end of June.

Opis:
The research was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation located in a dune area of the Toruń Basin (N Poland). The aim of the study was to investigate differences in dynamics of soil water conditions followed different method used for site preparation. The three plots were investigated in the study: belt of soil prepared by a mill, north−facing slope of a dune (FR−N), belt of soil prepared with a mill, south−facing slope of a dune (FR−S) and soil prepared with a plough (furrows) on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot soil samples were taken and soil moisture was regularly measured from April to December of 2013 (the TDR method). The measurements of soil moisture were taken at four depths (3, 10, 25 and 50 cm) at intervals of ca. 2 weeks. Additionally, soil moisture was also measured on 25.08.2015. It was done to determine soil water conditions for a deep summer drought (the measurements were taken twice this day – just before and after rain which turned to be the first since ca. a month). Reserves of soil moisture and shares of water unavailable to plants were calculated for every measure day for each study plot. As a result of higher organic carbon content, values of soil actual moisture as well as reserves of soil moisture were almost regularly higher for belts mixed with a mill than for furrows prepared with a plough (fig. 1, 3). Opposite relation was found, however for the summer drought (tab. 2). This was explained by the higher repellence of rich in organic mater, dried material occurring in belts. On 25.08.2015 much lower improvement of water conditions after rain was also stated for this material than for topsoil in LPZ. Unfavoured soil water conditions for plants occurring in belts in dry periods could explain relatively low dynamics of pine growth revealed for the variant of soil preparation in a previous study. However, it was concluded that a forest mill should be recommended for forestry, because the device much less disturbs topsoil than a plough. Besides, differences in growth parameters of pines followed different methods of soil preparation used before planting decline in next years of a stand growth.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the dynamics of soil temperature on inland dunes in the Toruń Basin (N Poland) with reference to the two methods of site preparation: homogenization of belts with a forest mill (FR) and preparation of trenches with a double−mouldboard plough LPZ−75 (LPZ). The study was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation on plots with soil prepared by a forest mill on north− and south−facing slopes of a dune (FR−N and FR−S respectively) and with soil prepared with a plough on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot a soil pit was dug and soil samples were taken from distinguished horizons for laboratory analyses. Besides, from April to December of 2013, at interval of ca. two weeks, soil temperature was measured at the depths of 3, 10, 25 and 50 cm. To estimate daily amplitudes of temperature in topsoil on the studied plots, in a sunny summer day (23.08.2013) the temperature was additionally measured from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an hourly interval. These measurements were taken at the two upper depths (3 and 10 cm). Despite the fact that soil surface was distinctly darker for belts prepared with a mill than in trenches prepared by a plough, soil temperatures were almost regularly lower in FR−N and in FR−S than in LPZ. This concerns all the investigated depths. The differences were explained by much higher moisture of soil material in belts what involves higher thermal capacity and with that slower heat of a soil, as well as causes higher losses of thermal energy for evaporation. Another agent explaining this was indicated to be related to high porosity of materials found in the belts. Namely, especially in dry periods, high volume of soil pores are filled on the FR plots with air what impedes heat transfer in a soil. It was concluded that stated in a previous study worse growth of pines planted in milled belts than in tranches prepared with a plough was unlikely related to differences in soil thermal conditions. Thus, differences in growth dynamics of young pines in plots with site prepared by the two studied methods are caused by other reasons rather as primarily other competitive impact of weeds and differences in soil water conditions occurring at root system of young trees.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the rate of mineralization of needles in a pine stand in relation to site and to microbiological conditions occurring on dune slopes of contrasting aspects. The research was conducted in the old−growth pine forest overgrowing a latitudinally located dune in the Bydgoska Forest (N Poland). On contrasting dune slopes (northern and southern) rate of mineralization of pine needles was investigated in the 2−years experiment (2012−2014) with the litterbag method. Besides, following investigations were conducted in the middle part of both slopes: 1. dynamics of soil moisture and soil temperature were measured at a depth of 3 cm for 18 days during the 2013 growing season (interval of 2 weeks was applied) and 2. populations of bacteria and fungi were determined for all subhorizons of organic soil horizon (Ol, Of, Oh) as well as for a mineral horizon (AEs) of both soils. Weight loss of needles was found to be higher on northern than on a southern slope what was consequently stated for all 4 terms of taking measurements (6, 12, 18 and 24 months after placement of litterbags). The discrepancy has increased with time and after 2 years it equaled 14.7% when the loss was 61.1% for northern and 46.4% for a southern slope. It could be surprising that such differences were found in spite a sunny slope was characterized by stated in a study higher soil temperature. It should have a stimulating effect on mineralization of organic material; however a soil located on a southern slope was also found as much drier. Thus, the periodic deficiency of soil moisture was indicated as a limiting factor for occurrence of both bacteria and fungi on a southern slope due to the numbers of both groups of microorganisms were much lower on the slope than on a northern aspect. Conditioned by more favourable site parameters, higher number of microbial population occurring on a shadow slope could explain higher rate of mineralization of needles stated for the slope aspect. The moisture factor can be of especially high significance for microbial occurrence and activity and thus for litter decomposition just in dry inland dune ecosystems. It was concluded that in relatively monotonous pine forests overgrowing dry and poor in nutrients soils of inland dunes the slope aspect is an agent significantly differentiating both site and soil microbial conditions.

Opis:
This study was carried out in the Słowiński National Park (SNP; northern Poland) in Scots pine forest stands. The aim of the research was to compare the accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese in needles of pines growing on in dry (Bs), fresh (Bw) and moist (Bw) habitats. The age of needles, soil moisture and the content of examined components in the soil were taken into account. Needles and soil samples were collected in September from 15 sites (Bs – 5, Bśw – 3, Bw – 7). The nitrogen was determined with Kiejdahl method, and the phosphorus by the molybdate method after digestion in the mixture of 98% H2SO4 and 30% H2O2. The content of K, Mg, Ca, Zn, Ni, Fe and Mn was assessed by atomic absorption spectrometry after digestion in the mixture of 65% HNO3 and 30% H2O2. The soils of SNP, developed from deep dune sands, were very poor in nutrients. The highest amounts of macro− and micronutrients were found in organic and humic levels. In mineral levels, the content of the ingredients decreased rapidly and in many cases was beyond the limit of determination. Extreme nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium deficiency was found in analysed needles, together with adequate amounts of magnesium, zinc, nickel, iron and manganese as well as an excess of calcium. Differences in the nutritional state of Scots pine in investigated habitats were apparent primarily in the sum of the components accumulated in the needles. Needles accumulated in total from 736.5 to 850.7 mmolc/kg of nutrients, with macronutrients ranging from 98.6 to 99.1%. The accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the examined needles decreased in the series Bśw>Bw>Bs. Mn and Fe showed the largest share in the micronutrient pool. Zn and Ni were significantly less common. The comparison of the accumulation of macro− and micronutrients in the needles indicated that stands on Bśw have slightly better conditions for development under unfavourable soil and climatic conditions prevailing in the Łeba Spit than those in Bs and Bw habitats.
