Opis:
The relationship between four volume increment indicators and selected tree appraisal characteristics was presented in the paper. The strongest relationship was observed between volume increment indicators and relative dbh increment, dbh increment and basal area increment. This relationship shows a significant differentiation (Table 1 and Table 2). The smallest estimation errors for the models describing individual volume increment indicators were found for indicator C4.

Opis:
The elevation is used to illustrate the differences in the structure and growth of mountain forests. The aim of the study was to determine (1) whether the characteristics used to describe the condition and structure of forest stands under protection status (volume of merchantable timber, tree density, total height of trees in the regeneration layer, volume of dead stems, current annual volume increment, volume of dead trees, periodic changes in standing volume) change at the same rate along with the elevation, and (2) whether in mountains without upper montane zone, the values of the selected characteristics of stands located in the highest elevation zone decrease at a low rate with elevation and are comparable to the stands at the same elevation in higher mountains ranges. The study was located at an elevation of 400−909 m a.s.l. in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (PNGS; SW Poland). We used data from the measurements performed in 2009 and 2014 on 358 permanent sample plots. Plots were assigned to one of five elevation zones of 100 m a.s.l. We assumed that the characteristic value decreased with the increase in the elevation, and that such change was the same for all stand characteristics. This hypothesis was verified using the ANOVA for the repeated samples. The calculations were based on standardized values of the characteristics measured on individual sample plots. The higher above sea level the plot was located, the greater share of spruce in the stand (fig. 1). The standing volume (fig. 2), trees density (fig. 3) and current annual volume increment (fig. 6) decreased with elevation, while the volume of dead stems (fig. 4) increased. The net changes in standing volume (fig. 8) were the smallest in the stands located at the lowest and at the highest zone (400−499 and 800−909 m a.s.l.). No significant relationship was found between the total height of trees in the regeneration layer (fig. 5) or the volume of dead trees in the period 2009−2014 (fig. 7) and the elevation. Individual characteristics differed in the rate of changes of their values with elevation (fig. 9). The structure of stands growing at the highest elevation was the most variable. These stands were rather a substitute for the upper montane zone forests. The rate of the observed decrease of the volume of merchantable timber, tree density and current volume increment in the stands of PNGS was higher than in other forests in the Polish mountains.

The paper contains the results of the analyses of four properties (average tree height, average dbh, standing volume, average stand volume growth) of pine stands growing on poor sites in the territory of the Polish Lowlands. The comparison of four relative values of the analysed properties among four 20−year age classes was performed. The obtained results were referred to the level of industrial pollution.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to characterise changes in the natural forest of the Białowieża National Park (BNP) Strict Reserve during a 15-year period. To allow for a more precise determination of the time course, overall duration and intensity of the observed changes, we further divided the 15-year period into shorter 2–7-year intervals. Taken together, the Strict Reserve forest stands cover 4584 hectares and they constitute the oldest part of the Białowieża Forest placed under protection in 1921. The measurements were carried out in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2011 and 2015 on 160 permanent sample plots, which are systematically distributed throughout the BNP Strict Reserve. During those 15 years, the volume of merchantable timber and the tree density fluctuated only slightly, because the reduction in standing volume due to a spruce and ash decline was compensated for by an increase in the standing volume of lime, hornbeam and alder. The volume increment and tree loss fluctuated slightly, but were nevertheless similar throughout the whole period between 2000 and 2015. The number of trees in the regeneration layer increased. The number of hornbeam trees in this layer increased continuously throughout the whole measurement period, while the number of maple trees started to increase in the second half. All together only five tree species growing in the BNP Strict Reserve progressed from the regeneration layer to the canopy layer in significant numbers. As a result, a gradual decrease in species diversity of forest stands may be expected. The rather stable, average volume of merchantable timber in the BNP Strict Reserve may be due to the fact that, in a forest with diverse habitats and high species richness, only few stands are subjected to strong disturbances in a given period of time. Repeated measurements during a relatively short period of time allowed the detecting some fairly quick changes occurring in natural lowland forests.

Opis:
The topic of forest plantations is particularly important in countries with low forest cover, where the demand for wood is particularly high, such as e.g. Kazakhstan. The main goal of this paper is to present the results of research on the productivity of selected cultivars of poplar: 62027−1 hybrid and Kazakh poplar, grown in various spacings (2,5×1, 3×1,5 and 3×2 m, which translates to stocking of 4000, 2220 and 1667 trees per ha, respectively), and the possibility of their cultivation in the conditions of southeastern Kazakhstan. The conducted experiments confirmed the high production potential of the selected hybrid poplars. The average volume of the individual trees' trunks at the age of 23 years reached 0,4−0,5 m³, the total growing stock can be up to 800−1000 m³/ha and the mean annual increment from 29 to 44 m³/ha. More adapted to the local conditions proved to be hybrids belonging to a section of white poplars. Due to dying tree tops and signs of damage from insects emerging at age exceeding 22−23 years, observed especially in plantations consisting up of hybrids belonging to the black poplars section, plantation rotation should not exceed 20 years. Establishing the poplar plantations using selected varieties is also one of the promising ways for reclamation of the saline soils of south−eastern Kazakhstan. Along with the timber and the possible use of biomass, plantations can be also used as a source of feed and hay for livestock.
