Opis:
The role of spruce in shaping the structure and volume of pine stands in the Augustowska Primeval Forest (north−eastern Poland) increases with the increase of site fertility. On poor coniferous forest sites, spruce occurs mainly in an understorey and sporadically as an admixture species, whereas on medium−fertile and fertile sites it builds the second storey and occurs in the upper storey accounting for about 30−40% of stand volume. In mature pine stands of the Augustowska Primeval Forest, spruce comes from natural regeneration. Taking into consideration the course of the regeneration process, four types of spruce age structure are distinguished.

The paper is a review of contemporary national and world literature related to the issue of damage to forests caused by wind and snow with special consideration of the most threatened species i.e. pine and spruce. Opis:
On the basis of the research on relationships between the height growth and different stand characteristics carried out on the material collected from 100 spruce stands three empirical equations for determining the height growth of stands were proposed. The most precise equation based on the average values of dbh increment, dbh and stand height allows to estimate the height increment with the average error equalling ±17.0%.

Opis:
In recent years, we face a massive dieback of Norway spruce stands in Poland. The cause of this process may lay in the way of their monocultural silviculture. The correct assessment of the habitat conditions and soil properties in particular is the basis of the proper management of these forest areas. The aim of this study was to verify application of the trophic soil index for mountain areas (SIGg) in the assessment of site conditions for spruce stands with different health condition. Three types of spruce stands were distinguished: degenerated, weakened and stable. In total, 32 study plots were established in following forest districts in southern Poland: Ustroń, Wisła, Bielsko, Węgierska Górka, Jeleśnia, Ujsoły and Lądek Zdrój. The SIGg was calculated on the basis of <0.02 mm fraction content, the sum of exchangeable base cations, soil acidity and the total content of N and organic C in the humus−mineral horizon. These attributes are useful to determine the potential productivity of the soils did not differentiate visibly the analyzed stand variants. The soil in degenerated and weakened spruce stands showed higher degree of acidity and less the content of base cations compared to soils of stable spruce stands. Mountain trophic soil index can be applied in the assessment of the forest sites potential. Although it does not enable to monitor the disturbances in the nutrients circulation, the detailed analysis of its components allows for precise assessment of the forest sites status.

Opis:
Dendrochronological analysis and measurements of selected features of the cones allowed to describe the influence of the over−regional factors and the origin of trees on the increment pattern of Norway spruce growing in north−western Poland outside its natural range. Trees from study sites in the Świerczyna Forest District that is located farther southwards than the others characterise different course of tree growth. One of these sites stands out from the analysed group in terms of biometric features of the cones. The origin of the trees seems to decide on the spatial distribution of the increment pattern in a little way.

Opis:
The paper presents analysis of tree damage after early thinning in lowland spruce stands. Percentage of tree with damage and weighted damage index (WDI) were considered. Three different thinning operations were analysed, in which different cutting method was applied. The smallest level of damage was observed when short wood system (SWS) was used. There were no significant differences between frequency of damage when full tree (FTS) and long wood (LWS) systems were compared.

The paper focuses on the analysis of taxation characteristics of 20 Polish provenances of Picea abies (L.) Karst. In 1996, spruce from Istebna Bukowiec was taken as a standard provenance, which generated the highest yield while in 2001 – the provenance from Zwierzyniec Lubelski. This is indicative of an interaction between assessment results and age, as well as of the existence of spruce populations which are more productive than the spruce from Istebna Bukowiec. It is advisable to continue studies concerning identification of spruce genetic resources in Poland.

The paper presents investigation on influence of root shortening on growth of 2−years−old Norway spruce seedlings after their development in the nursery. Measurements of basic morphological features reveal that strong length reduction increases regeneration of spruce root system. Together with that, slight decrease in height and diameter increment of the main shoot can be observed. Shortening of spruce roots improves significantly the balance between above− and belowground parts of the seedlings as well.

The paper focuses on dbh distributions in the natural spruce stands at different stages and in different phases of virgin type forest development in the upper montane belt (according to developmental cycle by Korpel). The dbh distributions: normal, logarithmic−normal, Weibull and gamma that were found on 12 permanent study plots measured in 1991−1994 depended on the developmental stages and phases of the stands analysed.

The research carried out was aimed at dendrochronological analysis of old timbers from the Gold Mine in Złoty Stok. The analysis resulted in 15 absolute datings of timbers of two tree species: Scots pine and fir. The established data fell into four last centuries. The oldest date, after 1667 AD, was obtained for fir wood from timbering of a shaft in the Masters' Adit (sztolnia Mistrzów), whereas the youngest one, after 1941 AD – for pine wood from the Prince's Adit.

Opis:
As there are different views concerning the relationship between branching type and timber quality, the present paper attempts to evaluate this relationship. The studies were carried out on 32 sample plots located within the boundaries of two natural ranges of Norway spruce in Poland: north−eastern and south−western. The selected trees were examined for the type of branching, height and diameter at breast height, timber quality, size classes or groups in a butt−end section, and kinds or varieties of wood defects having an effect on timber grade classification. The analyses did not show any clear relationship between branching type and timber quality of Norway spruce.

Opis:
On the basis of sectional measurements of diameters of trees from 5 sawtimber spruce stands in the Beskid Śląski and Beskid Żywiecki, a non−linear shape model for spruce stems has been developed using a trigonometric model [Bi 2000]. Subsequently, the accuracy of the proposed solution has been evaluated and compared with the accuracy of a linear model [Socha 2000]. The discussed non−linear model for describing the shape of stems is quite satisfactory, however, with regard to the accuracy of the determination of the stem morphological curve and volume this solution is inferior to the linear model.
