Opis:
The objective of the presented studies carried out in the Wkrzańska Primeval Forest (north−western Poland) was to determine the influence of ecotone structure on phytodiversity. Basing on data from three transects, it was shown that the inappropriate structure causes reduction in the number of plant species and communities as compared to typical forest phytocoenoses. It also results in the increase of non−forest flora from nitrophilous and meadow habitats.

Opis:
The study assessed the intensity of Polish konik browsing in mixed coniferous forest (BM), alder swamp forest (OL) and pine swamp forest (BB) of different canopy closure and shrub or ground vegetation cover. The study was conducted in Polish konik enclosure situated in the Roztoczański National Park (eastern Poland) in August 2011. We examined mean browsing intensity and the tendency of horses to browse along 100 m zone from the pasture. The field study was conducted at three parallel transects set in 40 m intervals in each analysed forest habitat, starting at the forest edge and oriented towards the forest interior. Along the transects, 5×2 m plots were established in 10 m intervals. Within each plot the untouched current twigs and twigs browsed by koniks (up to 2 m above the ground) were counted separately, and categorized by a tree and shrub species. For each species 30 samples of complete twigs and twigs browsed by koniks were collected. Twigs were dried by 72 h in 60°C and weighted with accuracy up to 0.001 g. We estimated the dry mass of shoots available within the plot and taken by horses. Generally, koniks were using each studied forest stand proportionally to the mean browse mass. A factorial regression indicates that regardless to the available mass in a given forest stand, horses foraging intensity towards the forest interior was varying significantly. Koniks entered further into the forest the more willingly the more open the forest canopy was. Openness of the forest habitat could indirectly influence the pattern of forest penetration by horses, because of the grazed ground vegetation there.

Opis:
Changes in structure of carabid assemblages caused by tourism were observed. They turned to be smaller in comparison to those caused by clear−cuttings, which was demonstrated on the example of selected indices (SCP, SBO) and SCP/SBO model analysis. Increase in regression changes in carabid assemblages with the increase of the pressure from water−tourists was shown. It was demonstrated on the basis of reduction of the frequency of autumn species, increase of the number of small zoophages and replacement of the higrophilous species with mezophilous ones. Higher pressure resulted in higher standardised number of species as well. However, achieved results suggest that changes in the environment are not so heavy, they are important for forest economy.

Opis:
This study evaluated the environmental risk drivers affecting the occurrence of cockchafer grubs in mature stands bordering with open spaces. The following factors were taken into the consideration: the distance from the edge towards the forest interior, the forest site type, species composition, canopy openness and the cover of forest floor with vegetation as well as cutting treatment in some of the investigated stands. In one of the biggest cockchafer outbreak centers in Poland (Lubaczów Forest District; SE Poland) 6 mature stands were chosen and estalished 5 transects in each of them. Each transect was 250 m long and consisted of 6 pits (1×0.5×0.5 m) in a regular distance of 50 m with the first pit on an open space bordering with forest. Pits were used to determine the grub infestation of the soil. In the area of 100 m² around the pit, the general vegetation cover and tree species composition of a stand were characterized. The forest light environment was defined by hemispherical photography. The distance in transect and the fact that stand was harvested were also taken into consideration. The applied logistic regression model demonstrated that the site fertility is the most important factor that significantly increases the risk of cockchafer grubs occurrence. The other characteristics that also cause that stand is more attractive for the cockchafer grubs are: participation of the broadleaved species in stand composition and the dense vegetation cover. Furthermore, the cockchafer grubs occurrence was more frequent in the forest interior than in an open space or at the forest−meadow ecotone.
