Opis:
To research attitudes to urban and suburban forests, a questionnaire was given to the random sample of 500 Warsaw residents. The most important factors identified by respondents included unlimited accessibility of urban forests as well as their proximity to urban areas. The main forest recreational activities expected by Warsaw residents were longer walks, natural silence and calm, also the absence of litter. A few respondents were receptive to the idea of managed forests as well as natural forests, if improving the quality of recreation is no taken into account. Respondents were willing to be taxed at 52 PLN/person/year in order to receive the desired level of non-timber forest functions in urban forests. Like residents of other regions of Poland, the respondents specified that the protection of air quality and protection of the natural environment are the most important non-timber forest functions. Among the most frequently visited forests located within the borders of Warsaw city are forests close to Choszczówka, Bielański forest and the forest in Koło, which receive respectively 251, 204 and 162 visitors/ha/day. The management of recreational resources in urban forests is expected to be diverse and adapted to the preferences of visitors.

Habitat preferences of capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in the Augustowska Forest (NE Poland) were evaluated using classification trees. Data were collected on 1033 circular sampling plots localized on leks and in their vicinity with 1 km radius. Gathered information described tree stands (site conditions, age, species composition, tree density, closure, vertical structure, lower strata coverage (saplings and shrubs) and blueberry coverage (Vaccinium myrtillus) as well signs of capercaillie presence. The analysis shows that for capercaillie of key importance are tree stands growing on fresh or wet coniferous sites, more than 100 years old, with density less than 446 trees/ha, with anthill and situated more than 150 from a road.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyse the preferences of jays in terms of oak acorn deposition in accordance to availability of some types of habitat. Investigations were carried out in forested areas of the Olsztyn Lakeland (NE Poland) with Scots pine forests domination. In autumn of 2014 and 2015 122 acorns of Quercus robur with concealed Telenax transmitters were served in four locations and then dispersed by jays Garrulus glandarius. Acorns with transmitters were radio tracked and localized after dispersion in different types of habitats. We distinguished three types of habitat: forest stands >40 years old, young forests <25 years old as well as clear−cuts and other open areas. The availability of habitats were estimated by 144 random points (36 per each location). Obtained availability/utilisation data were analyzed with chi square test ( =0.05). Results showed that majority (76.4%) of dispersed acorns were deposited under canopy of Scots pine stands, while only 8.2% were deposited on clear−cuts and other open areas. It seems that jays avoid to scatter its caches among clear−cuts and other open areas when availability of these types of environment is compared. Jays preferred to scatter the acorns under canopy of older (>40 years old) stands. It proves that the regeneration of oaks in clear−cuts is with low probability of success. The results suggest that density and high quality of regeneration that occurred on some of the clear−cuts seem to be a synchronization relic of oaks' mast crop and Scots pine fellings. In these circumstances the best solution to obtain oak regeneration is to synchronize the harvest with mast crops and carry it out immediately after acorn production to make an oak regeneration success guaranteed.

Opis:
Awareness of the importance of the presence of deadwood in forest ecosystems has increased in recent decades. Today, deadwood is not only recognized as a key element in carbon sequestration, nutrient supply and water retention, but is also known to be a reservoir of saproxylic species (species associated with the decay of wood on living and dead trees). The amount of deadwood in clear−cut forest is currently higher than 100 years ago. The issue of how much deadwood and of what quality (including size) there should be in order to promote the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity and sustainable forest management is still vivid. Mycological analyses to determine (i) structure of fungal communities in Scots pine wood debris, (ii) sources and reservoirs of fungi, (iii) nutritional preferences of fungi, and (iv) potential rate and dynamics of wood decomposition were carried out on an ‘old' and ‘fresh' wood (stumps, branches and boughs) from Jedwabno Forest District (north−eastern Poland). Fungi from 62 wood samples were isolated on two artificial media (PDA and SNA) and identified according to their morphology. Eleven species of Zygomycota, 79 of Ascomycota and 15 of Basidiomycota were detected. The majority of species (91%) colonized many samples. Only 9% of species colonized single samples only. The most common species, with high rates of colonization, included Acremonium spp., Alternaria sp., Aspergillus spp., Aureobasidium pullulans, Cladosporium spp., Epicoccum nigrum, Lecythophora spp., Mariannaea elegans, Ophiostoma + Sporothrix spp., Penicillium spp., Phialocephala spp., Phialophora spp., Phlebiopsis gigantea, Phoma spp., Sarocladium strictum, Scytalidium lignicola, Sydowia polyspora, Trichoderma spp. (mainly T. harzianum and T. viride) and Umbelopsis spp. A few species occurred only on stumps or only on branches. More species occurred on 'old' wood than on 'fresh' wood. The average level of sample colonization by a single fungal species was higher (non−significantly) on 'old' than on 'fresh' wood, and on branches than on stumps. The results show that deadwood is a habitat for many fungal species that occur in succession. The presence of deadwood in clear−cut forest and in its neighborhood is necessary for the conservation of saproxylic fungal diversity and ecological sustainability of forests.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to analyse the social preferences to the type of the forest stand and factors deciding about the tourist attractiveness of the forest. Data was collected during the nationwide surveys carried out in 2013 on the random representative sample of 1000 respondents above 18 years of age. The surveyed persons do not indicate strong preferences for deciduous or coniferous forest stands. The analysis of preferences for different types of forest stands with regard to respondents' sex did not confirm the importance of differences. Instead they suggest that respondents of different age tend to change their preferences with time – from broadleaved forest (the youngest respondents) to coniferous forest. Respondents in poor financial standing choose deciduous forest and mixed broadleaved forest, and people in good and very good financial standing – a coniferous forest stand, or rather a mixed one. What makes a forest stand attractive is mostly the forest's appearance and the nature along with the abundance of species, and the least, the presence of water or culture and historic sites. The older the respondents are, the more they appreciate silence and relaxation far from other people, as well as nature along with its abundance of fruits and fungi to be collected, while the least important is the diversity of land. Respondents with higher education (university degree) indicate the availability of land and the presence of waters as the most important features which decide of the attractiveness of forest, whereas people with the lowest education level – nature along with its abundance of species and the forest appearance. Respondents, who are in the best financial situation declare the appearance and the presence of lakes and rivers (features related to leisure), to be the most important factors which decide about tourist attractiveness of forest, and people in poor and very poor financial situation indicated: nature along with the abundance of species, availability of forest, places related to culture and religion, nature reserves, and tourist infrastructure.

Opis:
The number of capercaillie in its entire range of distribution is declining. Its population n Europe (without Russia) amounts to about 580 thousand individuals including 500 thousand in Scandinavia. In Poland, 480−600 capercaillies live in 4 isolated populations. The major reason of the declining abundances of capercaillie can be seen in altered forest biotopes and their isolated distribution, widespread predation, noisy behaviour of people, disturbances in population structure, or extinction of isolated populations. Protective measures in the European countries concentrate on active protection of natural populations, capercaillie restoration and research−based education, computer simulations of the survival of this species and a long−term monitoring system. The projects for restoration of domesticated birds developed in the Czech Republic and Germany appeared unsuccessful. The mortality of released individuals was greater than 90%. Poland lacks both an integrated research programme and a long−term monitoring of capercaillie. Legal regulations in force and national directives concerning the principles of capercaillie protection are not uniformly and efficiently implemented in practice. Currently, breeding of birds for reintroduction is held in the Leżajsk and Wisła Forest Districts.

The future capercaillie protection programmes should concentrate on the improvement of the capercaillie habitat structure, creation of ecological corridors between isolated habitats and reduction of predation pressure. International cooperation are an indispensable elements of efficient protection of capercaillie. Scientific research on capercaillie with special emphasis put on genetics, development of monitoring programmes, improvement of forest management methods are of the highest importance. It is essential to develop a comprehensive programme for reintroduction protection in accordance with IUCN directives.

Opis:
The results of a survey conducted in several Promotional Forest Complexes (PFC) in the Śląskie and Podlaskie regions, as well as the urban forests in Łódź and Warsaw, indicate that visitor preferences vary among forest sites. Those forests where visitors prefer to rest should be located in forests designated for recreation, and include elements of recreational infrastructure. Depending on characteristics of the forest in question (seaside, lakeside, or mountains), respondents preferred forest located near to the water's edge, whereas in mountainous areas they selected open places (roads and openings). Urban residents more commonly chose sites deep within the forest, while hikers selected forest edges. The desired recreational infrastructure, included garbage cans and hiking trails as the most important elements among city dwellers, while hikers pointed to rest areas and information boards. The respondents consistently agreed on the type of recreational activities conducted in forests as well as on type of elements which determine the attractiveness of forests for rest and recreation. Independently of site characteristics and the research location, the most common activities for respondents were hiking and riding bicycle; and attractive elements were silence and calm as well as cleanliness of the forests. The Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was used to evaluate respondents' Willingness to Pay (WTP) for intensification of selected public forest functions and forest management, including recreational functions. The number of respondents who declared a hypothetical monetary amount or WTP>0 depended on the place where research was conducted (forest or respondent's home); forest area covered by financing (forests in general or local forests where respondents reside); the type of question used to obtain the information on WTP; as well as the scope of financing (all public forest functions or just a recreational function). The average WTP declared per household per year varied from 41 PLN in 2002 to 150 PLN in 2006 for selected forest areas. The average overall state statistics for WTP was 52 PLN (non-timber forest functions in municipality) and 41 PLN (recreational management of forests in municipality). The respondents also underlined that the goods and services provided should be co-financed from both state and local budgets, and that such financing should go directly to the organizations conducting forest management.
