Opis:
Silver fir is one of the main tree species of mountain and foothill forests in Poland that in optimal conditions forms pure stands with multi−layer structure. The study objective is to present differences in height and diameter growth rates of firs growing in upper stand layers and in the undergrowth. The research was conducted in 12 fir stands located in the Beskid Niski Mts. (southern Poland). In each stand height and diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured for 25 fir trees in order to develop a height curve. The first canopy layer included trees that were higher than ⅔ Hmax established from the height curve of the tree with the largest dbh. Height and diameter were measured on eight trees selected from the first canopy layer. An increment core was extracted at breast height in order to estimate the tree age. From the third canopy layer, which included trees higher than 2 m with dbh below 7 cm, five trees were selected. After cutting those trees, the length of the last ten branch whorls was measured. Five−year ring width measurements starting from the bark towards the pith were done at the stem cross−sections obtained at breast height. The number of rings was counted on remaining stumps. Height growth rate was defined as the height at the base age of 100 years (eq. 1). For the first canopy layer, the height growth rate was on average 31.8 m, while for the undergrowth it was 12.1 m. There was also large difference between diameter growth rate of the first stand canopy layer (55.7 cm) and undergrowth (18.3 cm). Both differences were significant at p=0.05. These discrepancies could result from low amount of light reaching the forest floor. The correlation between height and diameter growth rates and undergrowth tree age was negative in both cases. Long periods of shading result in smaller number of firs reaching the first canopy layer. Assuming that uneven−aged stand structure is optimal for that species, it should be characterized by a spatial variability (mosaic) of various canopy layers including even−aged patches with sparse canopy closure as well as gaps where fir regeneration will be initiated having favorable growth conditions.

A comparative analysis was made for different measures of location and variation in height increment of the main stem of the mature black alder from the north−eastern region (N) and two southern regions (S1 and S2) of Poland. Correlation was found between annual height increment and tree age and height, as well as the number of the nodes along the shoot and the length of the internode. It was demonstrated that the trees producing long shoots in a given year would produce long shoots also in the successive years.

Opis:
The research material including the results of a full analysis of 171 spruce stems, selected from among 57 stands growing at altitudes of 600−1,200 m a.s.l. indicated a significant impact of the position of a stand above sea level on volume growth rate and age of its culmination. Of the three properties dbh, height and basal area growth explain the greatest range of variability of growth rate (from 75% to 91.1%). Equations developed on the basis of the above mentioned properties allow determining the values for growth rates with the mean error of 7.17−13.97%.

Opis:
The paper presents temporal relationships between the breakdown of tree stand in the subalpine spruce forest and the regeneration of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) as well as the rate of height growth of rowan stems. Rowans growing in a large gap recruited mostly from the seedling and sapling bank established under the living spruce stand before its breakdown. The rate of stem height growth was five times higher after the gap formation than under spruce stand. In spite of considerable age differences of rowans the variability in their final height after over 20 years of rapid growth was small.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of studies on the life span, survival, weight and fecundity of the forest cockchafer (Melolontha hippocastani, Fabricius, 1801) and the common cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha, Linnaeus, 1758) beetle feeding on Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn., Betula pendula Roth., Carpinus betulus L., Fagus sylvatica L., Larix decidua Mill., Prunus serotina (Ehr.) Borkh., Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Quercus robur L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Sambucus nigra L. and Sorbus aucuparia L. em. Hedl. The lifespan and weight of beetles as well as female fertility were examined in 2011 and 2013. Specimen for laboratory tests were collected in the field shortly after leaving their overwintering sites in the soil and identical experimental protocols were applied to both examined species. 576 and 432 beetles were tested in 2011 and 2013, respectively. In 2011, beetles were feeding on A. glutinosa, B. pendula, F. sylvatica, L. decidua Q. petraea leaves and on C. betulus, P. serotina, R. pseudoacacia, S. aucuparia and S. nigra in 2013. Both years, beetles feeding on Q. robur leaves were examined as a control. Our results showed that feeding on leaves of Q. robur and Q. petraea had the largest positive impact on the life time, weight and fecundity of the studied beetles. Leaves of F. sylvatica and L. decidua also constituted an adequate food source for the development of M. melolontha. M. hippocastani, however, did not perform as well when feeding on these two tree species. Females of M. melolontha reared on leaves of B. pendula did not lay eggs. The following plant species had a negative impact on the survival and development of the collected specimen and female fertility: A. glutinosa, S. nigra, P. serotina and R. pseudoacacia. Neither beetle species fed on the leaves of A. glutinosa or S. nigra.

Opis:
The survival, weight and relative growth rate (RGR) of the Melolontha spp. grubs feeding on roots of Quercus petraea, Q. robur, Fagus sylvatica, Betula pendula, Larix decidua, Alnus glutinosa and Pinus sylvestris were examined. Overall, the youngest grubs, L1, were the most affected by food quality. The mortality of the grubs feeding on the roots of A. glutinosa changed most rapidly and, consequently, LT50 was the shortest (25.9 days), whereas the slowest changes in mortality with the highest LT50 values were observed on the two oak species (54.9 and 44.9 days on Q. robur and Q. petraea, respectively). The RGRs of the L1 grubs were the highest on oaks, F. sylvatica and B. pendula. The overall rate of survival of the older grubs was high (66.7-100%). It was the lowest on the roots of B. pendula (L2 grubs) and L. decidua (L3 grubs), which at the same time displayed the highest RGRs. The interpretation of the results is difficult due to the lack of basic knowledge on the potential effects of food quality and other factors on grub metamorphosis. There is no doubt, however, that among the seven tested tree species the roots of A. glutinosa are the least favorable for the Melolontha grubs' performance.

Opis:
The rate of change in the cost of logged timber and prices of raw timber during the period, 2001-2009, was examined for the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Zielona Góra. A logarithmic evaluation of average rate of change indicated that the rate of increase in timber harvest costs was higher than the rate of increase in the average price of raw timber and likewise the price of most log grades. The average increase in raw timber value was 2.51% annually. The price of low-diameter raw timber (slash) increased 8.61%, and the price of large-diameter timber increased 1.94% annually, while the price of large coniferous segments increased 1.75% and broadleaf segments increased 2.98% annually. At the same time, the timber logging costs increased more than the timber price, to 4.17%, or 4.19% when administrative costs related to timber logging are included.

Opis:
Increment of growing stock is one of the key indicators useful in forest management. In the State Forests in Poland, up to now it is estimated using growth and yield tables elaborated a century ago. Paper presents results of study concerning current annual increment of Scots pine stands. Basing on repeated measurements of stand volume increment was estimated to 14.5 m³./ha for stands in age from 37 to 60 years and to 6.2 m³./ha for stands aged over 140. Increment estimated by measurements was 30−80% higher than increment evaluated using growth and yield tables for particular age classes.
