Opis:
Complex, new and insufficiently recognised issues that appear as the result of multifunctional approach towards forest management need application of sophisticated techniques and analytical methods supporting the State Forests' IT Systems (State Forests Information System SIL) and Geographical Information System GIS). The authors take efforts to elucidate the usefulness and effectiveness of one of Artificial Intelligence methods − Artificial Neural Networks which support GIS in spatial analyses in forestry.

Opis:
In new version of natural−forest regionalization that was completed in 2010, Poland was divided into 8 natural−forest lands, which, in turn, consisted of 11−35 mezoregions. The objective of the study was to evaluate the delimitation of the defined mezoregions. The correctness of the delimitation was assessed by the means of similarity analysis. The similarity of adjacent mezoregions (within borders of each of the natural−forest lands) was calculated based on three main criteria (geological formations, natural landscapes and vegetation landscapes), which were used for definition of the mezoregions borders. Data on spatial distribution of the above criteria were acquired in digital form and then processed using Geographic Information Systems technology in order to identify and describe each of the mezoregions. The assessment of the similarity was based on the calculation of the partial similarity indices for each of the criteria, and then on the calculation of the overall similarity index for each pair of adjacent mezoregions. Received values of the overall similarity index range from 0.01 to 0.48. The smallest range of the index is in the Sudecka land (0.09−0.28) and the highest is in the Baltic land (0.01−0.41) and in the Carpathian land (0.07−0.48). In order to facilitate analysis of the results, five−level scale of similarity was adopted. All around Poland there are no mezoregions whose degree of similarity to adjacent mezoregions is large or very large. The medium similarity (index value 0.41−0.70) was observed in 1.7% of the analyzed cases, small similarity (index value 0.21−0.40) was observed in 37.7% of the analyzed cases and the lack of similarity (index value 0.00−0.20) in 60.6% of cases. Delimitation of mezoregions was therefore prepared correctly.

Different GIS data and products are created for forest districts. Among other are orthophotomaps and digital terrain model data, which may be used in forestry independently or in integrated forms. Geomatics offers software for data integration in the form of 3D visualization on the computer screen. 3D visualization contains information that allows using it for forest education, forest management and in public relation for purposes of the State Forests National Forest Holding. The paper discuses features of 3D visualization of integrated geomatics data, which are orthophotomaps, digital terrain model data and vector layers.

Opis:
Widely used IT System of Polish State Forests National Holding that is currently supported with forest digital map (LMN) allows advanced processing of digital data. LMN, which contains complete information about forest in digital form, allows using computation tools for realisation of planning and projecting tasks or modeling of forest ecosystems processes. This paper presents capabilities of using Expert Systems and GIS in forestry. The usefulness and effectiveness of Expert Systems and GIS in the process of projecting of bicycle trails in forest are discussed.

Opis:
The need for effective management of uncertainty and incomplete information is the main factor of interest in the rough set theory and multi−use methods of analysis based on this theory, both in scientific research and in solving practical problems. Rough sets can be used for processing of both non spatial and spatial data. Five areas of application of rough set in decision−support systems in forestry and forest research are presented in the study. The example of using rough sets methods for data processing in order to determine cause−effect relationships and making classification is also presented.

Opis:
Since many years much attention has been paid to the rationality of wood transportation criteria due to the realization of social objectives. Identification and elimination of unnecessary haulage can reduce the total cost of transport and contribute to reducing fuel consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and accident risk. This paper concerns decision support for the allocation of available wood as a lot of irrationality of the existing wood transport operations has been observed. The aim of the study was to develop and test the method of optimizing the allocation of wood available in forest districts for selected groups of customers from over the country, taking into account the criterion of export distance (geography of purchase). The scale of the effects of applying the proposed optimization method is also presented. Data on sales of medium size S2A Scots pine wood in 2015 was used. A model of a two−dimensional transport task was built in order to optimize wood allocation. The road distance between the points where the wood was loaded and the points where it is processed was determined using the transportation network and network analysis performed in ArcGIS software. Linear programming was used to develop a software to support the allocation of wood to a group of selected customers nationwide. It was assumed that the benefits of optimization would be shared by whole group and not just by each customer individually. Changing existing supply locations can significantly shorten the average transportation distances up to 31% for particular customers (tab. 2), while for the whole group of analysed customers the reduction amounted to 14%. As a result of the proposed method, the transportation work would be reduced by 65 mio m3, which would reduce the average distance of timber exports by 15 km. This allows shortening of over 174 thousand of truckloads. The savings from the shortage of truck− loads will amount to over 1.1 mio l of diesel fuel, which is worth about 5 mio PLN (1.18 mio ).
