Opis:
Root−feeding insects are an increasingly studied group of herbivores, whose impact on plant productivity and are some of the most damaging forest pests in Europe. Due to the mass feeding on the roots of seedlings and older trees in young plantation and stands, Melolonthinae larvae are classified as pests, which are the most dangerous on the land dedicated to afforestation. The research was located in the Wyszków Forest District (52°43'15' N; 21°39'03' E) on the mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest habitats. This study evaluated sawdust traps as the method for assessing abundance of Melolonthinae larvae in Scots pine plantations established artificially from open nursery, container production, and from natural regeneration. In spring 2015 i) ‘small sawdust pits’ in rows between seedlings, and ii) pits without soil in adjacent inter−rows as control were prepared. In spring and autumn 2016, and in spring 2017 sawdust and soil from both variants of pits were sieved and Melolonthinae larvae were counted and compared. The obtained results were analyzed in two ways. The first analysis compared the occurrence of grubs in small pits with or without sawdust, while the other one analysed influence of the time of making small pits, independently for the variant with or without sawdust. The final stage was to compare the number of Melolonthinae larvae in small pits between the origin of the seedlings. We found a greater number of grubs in spring assessment than in autumn. Both kinds of small pits showed higher number of Melolonthinae larvae when compared to traditional method of ‘great pits’. The number of Melolonthinae larvae was significantly higher on the plots with container seedlings than the others. The conceptual assumptions of this alternative and environmentally safe method of ‘sawdust traps’ seems to be optimistic.

Different kinds of solar radiation (direct, diffuse) shape microclimate of forest gaps and have significant influence on establishment and growth of young trees. Adjustment of the shape and size of artificial gaps could create favourable conditions that meet the demands of particular species. Unfortunately there is lack of publications concerning this topic, which could be used directly for silvicultural planning in Polish conditions. Empirical assessment of radiation regimes in a wide range of different shaped gaps is impossible from practical reasons, so modelling in ArcGis environment was used instead. Gaps of different shape and size were modelled as elliptical depression in terrain by the use digital elevation model. The Solar Radiation tool was used to model direct and global radiation on the bottom of the gaps with area varying between 2 and 50 are surrounded by stands of height between 15 to 35 meters. The outcome of modelling was presented in form of nomograms. Additional series of analyses was created to describe the influence of terrain aspect and inclination on solar radiations supplies on the forest floor in gaps. Presented nomograms could be helpful in silvicultural planning, because they could be used to design artificial gaps with expected solar radiations supplies.

Opis:
This paper addresses the question of whether or not and to which extent two common tree species mixtures (Norway spruce – European beech; sessile and pedunculate oak – European beech) vary in volume growth from their monocultures. To this end, the results from selected long−term experimental plots located in Germany, Poland and Switzerland, with many of them under survey since the 1890's, were employed. We found than on average both type of mixtures exceeded volume growth in pure stands by almost 30%. The analysis at the species level showed than only a Norway spruce response to mixture was neutral on average, while other tree species were benefitted by mixture. An empirical derived model for mixed stand of oak and European beech disclosed that the interaction can range from facilitation and overyielding on poor sites, through the neutral response under mesotrophic conditions, up to underyielding on fertile sites triggered by competition.

Opis:
Mechanical site preparation is recommended to create optimum conditions for seed germination and seedling growth in a clear−cut area. Lack of soil scarification or less−intense methods may be more suitable from an environmental point of view, but can result in a failure to obtain natural regeneration. This study compared the effects of three mechanical site preparation methods (SPM) characterized by different levels of soil scarification (i.e. double mould−board forest plough (LPz), active plough (PA) or forest mill (FL)), as well as a control variant without mechanical site preparation, on height, density, spatial distribution and survival among naturally regenerating Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the first 2 years of growth in a clear−cut area of NE Poland. The experiment was based around a four−block randomized block design involving the four variants. Seedling height was measured at the end of the first and second growing seasons, with measurements performed on 8 meter−wide transects extending across the entire width of the cleat−cut. We found no effect of SPM on seedling height, though the density of seedlings regenerating naturally was found to be dependent. After two years, the highest density was achieved in the PA variant (8.1 seedlings/m2) and the FL variant (7.0 seedlings/m2). A significantly lower density characterized the LPz variant (5.1 seedlings/m2) and the lowest of all the variant without soil scarification (3.2 seedlings/m2). The most homogeneous natural regeneration was achieved following the use of PA (2.6% of 1 m2 plots without seedlings after two growing seasons), while the least homogeneous was the variant without soil scarification (22.4% of 1 m2 plots). Survival of pines after the second growing seasons was quite high (over 80%), and did not differ significantly depending on the SPM. Our research therefore confirmed that, in the absence of mechanical site preparation, natural regeneration of sufficient density and homogeneity cannot be obtained. The best natural regeneration was obtained on sites prepared with PA, and FL scarification being only slightly less favorable. The low density and uneven distribution of seedlings on the soil prepared with LPz was a surprising result. The probable reason for this lay in the high precipitation in the first growing season. On one hand, this provided very good moisture conditions for seed germination and seedling growth on a substrate with high porosity in the PA and FL variants, but on the other the high bulk density of mineral soil in the LPz variant led to oxygen deficit.

Opis:
The registered parcel can be explained as continuous part of land within a subdistrict. It has to be also homogeneous legally and separated from other objects by the boundary lines. In the spatial structure of the State Forests National Forest Holding the registered parcel correspond to a forest compartment. The paper presents new approach to registered parcel definition, which can store more than one forest compartment (forest complex). In this way it is possible to create new basic area object as a base for cadastre (land registry) within the forest district. The aim of this study was to assess positioning accuracy of the boundary marker and the area of registered parcel. The measurements were conducted on stabilized boundary markers within forest complex and not−stabilized boundary markers within forest compartments. Using surveying technology the network of polygonal traverses were created. The control points for every travers line were measured by geodetic class GNSS receiver. It was assumed that all measured coordinates are free from error, so it was possible to asses registered parcel positioning errors. These errors are ±3.96 m for not−stabilized boundary markers and ±0.43 m for stabilized boundary markers. Applying the new idea, all existing forest compartments were joint into one big parcel within forest complex. The total number of parcels was reduced from 988 to 335. Based on formula [4] the area of parcels was calculated in two variants: considering their existing borders (not−stabilized boundary markers) and considering merged parcels (stabilized boundary markers). For the previous, the average error of parcel area equals to 1348 m² (26−6606, standard deviation=814 m²). In the latter variant, the average error of parcel area is much lower and equals 147 m² (5−3008, standard deviation=293 m²). The final results prove that new concept for basic area objects is justified and should be gradually implemented in the State Forests. This idea will not only facilitate forest management, but increase accuracy of borders positioning and simplify land registry as well.

Opis:
Scots pine stands in central Poland are now seen to be experiencing dynamic development of lower layers formed by oaks. The under−canopy natural renewal taking place in this way is sometimes characterised by good silvicultural quality, and could therefore be taken advantage of in the process of stand conversion. The study assess the quality of existing undergrowth layers of oak present in older stands of Scots pine, most especially from the point of view of their suitability for subjection to further silvicultural measures. The research material was collected in 10 objects where site type was classified as mesic mixed coniferous site type (BMśw) as well as in 11 ones with mesic mixed broadleaved forest (LMśw) site type. In each site type, 2 or 3 stands were selected to typify undergrowth layers aged 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. Assessment of oak undergrowth trees was made on the basis of 4−point scale in case of trunk or crown quality and vitality, and on a 3−point scale when vitality and the development trend were concerned. Next we selected the trees with future potential characterised by the highest quality from the point of view of all studied traits. A further determination concerned the influence on the traits in these best trees of the oak understorey that was exerted by biometric features of both the sheltering Scots pine stand and the under−growth itself. The studied undergrowth oaks are of either very good or good quality. Around 90% of these young trees could be assigned to 1st or 2nd quality class with the respect of all of analysed traits. Furthermore, fertility of the site type was found not to have any influence on the quality of the young oaks. However, where the number of trees identified as having future potential is concerned, influence was demonstrated for density of trees in both stand and the undergrowth layer, as well as their height, breast−height diameter and basal area. Oaks forming the lower layer beneath Scots pine stands are thus characterised by good quality and growth trends, to the extent that this suggests allowing further growth to take place, with inclusion within the main stand or next generation.

Opis:
In most cases, mechanical site preparation (MSP) is a precondition if high−quality (natural or artificial) regeneration of forests is to be achieved. However, the measures involved here may differ in terms of the level of intervention of the soil environment, at both the surface and deeper down. The choice of MSP methods should be based on climatic conditions, site type and the species whose renewal is sought, while the effect should improve conditions for the emergence and growth of the young generation of trees, with the influence on the soil environment being limited as far as possible. The research sought to compare physical and chemical features of the soils of the microhabitats created in clear−cut areas as a result of MSP using either an LPz double mould−board forest plough (furrow and ridge), an active plough (furrow and ridge) and a forest mill (belt and beyond the belt) as compared with unscarified soil. Investigated physical features included grain size (content of sand, silt and clay), bulk density and actual moisture, while the chemical ones: pHH2O and pHKCl, exchangeable acidity, total content of N and C and the C/N ratio, P2O5 content and base cations Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Na+. The most invasive MSP method for the soil environment is the active plough, which leaves the ridge exposed to processes of the decomposition of organic matter (and the highest content of N, C, Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+). Equally, this method may pose the greatest threat of mineral components of the soil being leached, with impoverishment of the habitat ensuing. The forest mill in turn offers the least invasive MSP. Most of the physical and chemical features of soil (other than exchangeable acidity and pHH2O and pHKCl) both in the belt areas and beyond them differed little from the those characterising non−scarified soil. Also the analysed features determined for the furrows ploughed by the active or LPz ploughs or the belt prepared using the forest mill did not differ significantly.
