Opis:
The aim of the study was to combine and summarize data on rare species of breeding forest birds found in the area of the Experimental Forest District near the Rogów village (Łódź Province). Our study area comprised 230 km2 of field and forest mosaic, where forests accounted for almost 17% of the area (13 forest complexes of 37–1000 ha). The results are based on the authors’ own field observations from the years 2000–2015 as well as historical data since 1949 including original research papers, diploma theses, unpublished manuscripts, oral information and analyses of museum collections. The following criteria were used to categorize bird species as rare: (1) species that ceased breeding in the area, (2) taxa that were under strict protection and their abundance was no higher than 6 breeding pairs. In overall, 10 species were classified as rare, of which three do not breed in the area any more: grey heron Ardea cinerea, osprey Pandion haliaetus, European roller Coracias garrulus. However, non-breeding individuals of grey heron and osprey are still recorded in the area (the last cases of breeding pairs were recorded in the 1970s and 1961, respectively), while the European roller went extinct. In recent years, the abundance of another three species was probably stable: European honey buzzard Pernis apivorus, Eurasian hobby Falco subbuteo and nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus. Four species started breeding in the last 30 years: black stork Ciconia nigra, white-tailed eagle Haliaeetus albicilla, common crane Grus grus, stock dove Columba oenas. The trends in the abundance of the investigated species are similar to those observed in the country in overall.

Opis:
Data on sex structure and growth of the population is crucial for proper game management. Camera traps, which are of reasonably low cost, but very efficient, can potentially measure the aforementioned parameters. The paper objectives was to assess the share of bucks, does and calves in red deer Cervus elaphus population in the area of the Białowieża Forest. Two methods were used: camera traps and a traditional method of all−year−round observations. The study was conducted in the years 2011−2015 in three forest districts and the Białowieża National Park. Reconyx trail cameras were exposed in one location for approximately 30 days, then moved to a new place. Altogether, trail cameras were exposed in 761 spots, at least 500 m apart one from another. Analyses were based on material collected between June 1st to September 31st when sex and age identification were the most reliable and hunting season had yet not started. Additionally, all−year−round observations of animals were done by foresters and scientists in the whole forest area, species, sex and age were noted in the special forms. The number of observers was similar to that of exposed trail cameras. Sex and age structure of red deer population changed between years, but according to both methods does were more numerous than bucks. According to trail cameras, share of bucks was on average 42 vs. 32% (data for all years combined), and a population growth was 39−60 calves/100 does, depending on a year. According to all−year−round observation, share of bucks was 26%, of does 53% and there were 37 calves/100 does. The dominance of does over bucks is difficult to explain as the sex structure at birth is 1:1. The does are more susceptible to predation and are culled more often. As data from trail cameras showed lower disproportion, we may assume that those results were more reliable. Trail cameras can collect data all the time, regardless the season, time of a day and weather conditions. Pictures can be analysed in details and observations verified if necessary. Their biggest disadvantage is price (especially when we assume that all−year−round observations can be done as a part of work duties by forest service), and risk of theft or damage.

Opis:
Presence of four owl species was confirmed in the area of Forest Experimental Station of WULS−SGGW in Rogów (central Poland) at the beginning of the 2000s. These were tawny owl, long−eared owl, little owl and barn owl. In the second half of the XX century migratory short−eared owls had also been recorded. Density of tawny owl territories per total area was 2.6/10 km².. For long−eared owl it was lower (1.5/10 km².). Little owls and barn owls were very rare and both species have probably decreased severely in the last several years. Despite fluctuations in the abundance of forest rodents, number of tawny owl pairs was reasonably stable throughout study time. In the case of long−eared owl its numbers varied between years.

Opis:
Wildlife passages are an important tool to reduce negative effects of transport infrastructure on habitat connectivity and animal population viability. The aim of our study was to evaluate the use of two underpasses by medium-sized mammals. Both underpasses are situated in the area of the Rogów Forests, Central Poland, one of which is located under a road and the other under railway tracks. We used camera traps to monitor every wildlife crossing between February 2016 and December 2017. Four wild mammal species (roe deer, brown hare, red fox, martens) as well as domesticated cats and dogs were registered in the vicinity of the road underpass. Except for roe deer, the underpass was used (i.e. animals entered) by all of the listed species. The underpass was mainly used by brown hares in spring and by wild as well as domestic carnivores in autumn. Brown hares used the underpass mostly between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., while foxes, cats and dogs at night. Near the underpass of the railway track, roe deer, wild boar, brown hare, red fox, raccoon dog, European badger, martens, European polecat as well as domestic dogs and cats were observed. Only wild boar and brown hare never entered the underpass. Roe deer used the underpass in May-June and September, wild carnivores in spring and dogs in summer. Only dogs used the underpass round the clock with roe deer, foxes, badgers and racoon dogs frequenting it at night. Domestic carnivores used both passages more often compared to wild mammals. Both underpasses were also heavily used by humans mostly in spring and at daytime. The usage of the underpasses by wildlife was strongly seasonal which could be related to increased animal locomotory acti- vity, i.e. during rut, dispersal of young. Furthermore, wild animals used the underpasses at night, when humans were less active indicating that human activity might have influenced the usage of the underpasses by wild mammals.
