Opis:
Black cherry (Prunus serotina) was planted in forests in Central Europe in the hope of producing valuable timber and after the first disappointments, in the hope of improving the soils of coniferous plantations. Nevertheless, an unequivocal evaluation of its effect on soil environment is still a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to determine a temporary fluctuation of selected soil properties in Scots pine forest dominated by black cherry. The research was carried out in Wołów Forest Division (SW Poland). Two Scots pine monocultures developed on podzol site with and without P. serotina in shrub layer, were selected for the study. Twelve research plots (10×10 m) were randomly selected on the sites. On each plot the cover of P. serotina in the shrub layer was evaluated and every three months, during single research year (November 2013 − November 2014) soil properties (total N, organic C, soil reaction) were determined in organic (O) and humus (A) horizons. Analysis of variance and PCA procedure demonstrate some significant relationships between P. serotina and soil properties in Scots pine forest. The presence of black cherry contributes to continued changes in the organic horizon expressed by increase in total N (range of average from 1.14 to 1.38%) and drop in C:N ratio (range of average from 22.86 to 25.73). Apart from the spring, increase in pH value in the organic (range of average from 4.03 to 4.58) and humus horizons (range of average from 3.59 to 4.04) was found on the site invaded by black cherry.

Opis:
The study focuses on capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and other Galliformes birds reintroduction projects carried out in Europe since the 1950s. In Germany alone, there have been eleven projects involving the release of a total of ca. 5,000 caprcaillies, mainly obtained from the closed breeding centres. The majority of birds died shortly after release. The high mortality was caused by great pressure from predators and the poor adaptation of the birds bred in captivity to the wild−life conditions. The high mortality among the birds from artificial breeding is associated with changed morphology (e.g. shorter digestive tract, less−developed pectoral muscles), physiology, and behaviour (insufficiently developed social and anti−predatory behavioural mechanisms). Survival rates among the birds released into the wild were primarily affected by the method of breeding and release, quality of habitat, and pressure from predators. The survival rates of translocated birds were higher than those obtained from traditional breeding in aviaries. Better results were also obtained with the 'born to be free' method of breeding and release based on social contact between the mother and chicks. The following actions are obligatory in reintroduction projects: predators reduction, evaluation and improvement in the quality of environment, as well as long−term monitoring of birds. The factors crucial for the effectiveness are: the total number of birds released, the number of released birds in subsequent years, and the overall duration of the project.

Opis:
The extent and structure of topsoil damage caused by different skidding techniques, like horse, skidder and farm tractor operating together, were determined. The research was carried out during the final cuts in the beech−fir stands situated in the foothill zone. The smallest extent of damage was caused by horse skidding (15% of stand area), while the largest – by skidder (18%). At the same time, the highest volume of disturbed soil (40 m3/ha) characterised horse skidding while the lowest (30 m3/ha) was observed when all the three skidding techniques were used. Analysis of the dimensions (area and volume) of single soil disturbances showed the smallest damage caused by skidder. The larger area and volume of disturbed soil was characteristic for the joint use of the three different skidding techniques. The research showed that soil damage caused by horse skidding was twice less likely than if skidder was used and over 2.5 times more probable if skidding was performed by several techniques.

The objective of the research was to analyse the level of fungal infection of spruce wood in the mature and overmature stands and determine the age of their technical maturity. Trees from seven stands aged 49−137 were examined. Age was found to have a statistically significant effect on the level of infection of trees caused by wood−rotting fungi. A high infection level was also detected in the bark−stripped spruces of the lower storeys of multi−storeyed stands. The obtained results enabled determination of the age at which spruces are considered mature (technical maturity) for felling at 80−90 years.

Opis:
he visual estimates of tree canopy cover belong to the fundamental measurements of analytical features of forest phytocoenoses. However, it is the subjective method, which results in error difficult to control. The objective of the research was to present a canopyscope and to compare results of canopy cover estimation using it with visual estimates. We conducted several experiments in oak−hornbeam, pine and spruce forest stands in southern Poland. We engaged in fieldwork well− and less−experienced students, i.e. biologists skilled in methods of phytosociology and students of nature engineering as well as three professional phytosociologists. They performed a comparative research in terms of correlation analyses, analysis of coefficients of variation and intra−class correlation (ICC) between−observers and between−methods using both ways of canopy cover estimates. The correlation between canopyscope score and results of visual estimates was highest in the group of phytosociologists (rs=0.82, p<0.001) followed by well−experienced students (rs=0.72, p<0.001) and less−experienced persons (rs=0.62, p<0.001). For purpose of comparison of both methods two variants of visual method were applied: optional visual cover estimate, and adjusted visual method where percentage cover of tree layer was noted using 4% intervals likewise in canopyscope method. The results of visual estimate method were characterized by more than threefold higher variation (CV%=9.72 and CV%=9.46 for optional variant and adjusted variant respectively) in comparison with canopy−scope method (CV%=2.26) in repeating measurements on the same plot. In terms of repeatability, analysis yielded 0.873 (p<0.0001) and 0.622 (p=0.00682) values of ICC for canopyscope and adjusted visual estimate respectively between two phytosociologists. The result of intra−class correlation for comparison between methods within each rater separately revealed low and non−significant value of ICC. We suggest using canopyscope because this method is more precise, reliable and repeatable than visual estimation. Moreover, canopyscope is easier and more convenient to use when compared to objective methods as hemispherical photography of tree canopy and image analysis.

Opis:
Edible forest mushrooms are one of the most important non−wood products and their economic importance is constantly growing. Only in Poland, the value of collected mushroom is estimated to about 740 million PLN a year. Such species as Boletus sp., Lactarius sp. or Tuber sp. are the most valuable non−wood forest products. Wild species, a great part of which are ectomycorrhizal fungi, not only play a key role in the growth and development of forest trees, but also belong to the most used in the Polish cuisine. A new challenge is to develop a scientific basis for the production of edible ectomycorrhizal fungi. Given the fact that fructification of fungi is influenced by many environmental, ecological, orographic and anthropogenic factors, their growing is rather a tough task. So far, methods of fungi growing have been developed in case of several species and they are still to be implemented on an economic scale. Under natural conditions, both mycorrhizal and fruiting processes may be stimulated by proper silviculture treatments, which are conducive to wood and mushrooms production as well. Nowadays, the concept of ‘mycosilviculture' is gaining more and more interest. In order to implement it, the knowledge of the biology of fungi and their host−species is needed. In this article, a rich body of studies dealing with the influence of management methods on fruitification of fungi is reviewed. The critical factor that appears is the proper regulation of tree density by appropriate severity of thinnings and regeneration cuts in order to meet the requirements of targeted fungi. The other kinds of treatments, such as removal of the herb cover, litter and upper soil level also affect fungi fructification. The effect of these treatments may vary for different species. The knowledge of wild mushroom production, forest management and climate changes still requires long−term and multidimensional research in a broad spectrum of tree stands and forest habitats.

soil penetration resistance
Opis:
The objective of the studies was to determine the penetration resistance (cohesion) of soil compacted at timber harvesting in Scots pine stands subjected to late thinning. The scope of the investigations was limited to two technologies – the mechanized one, using a harvester−forwarder machine set, as well as the motor−manual one, employing petrol chainsaws and a farm tractor for forwarding and dragging of felled trees. The analyses were performed in central Poland, in the Staszów Forest District, for two habitats – fresh mixed coniferous forest and fresh mixed deciduous forest. The measurements of soil cohesion were taken with the use of Eijkelkamp 06.15.SA Penetrologger penetrometer along the five measurement lines situated perpendicularly to the main skidding track. The soil penetration resistance was measured in eight spots for every measurement line: in the middle of the left and right wheel−rut, between the wheel−ruts, on the left and right roadside within a distance of 0.5 and 1 m from the wheel−rut edge, and 10 m from the right wheel−rut; the latter location was treated as the reference. The mechanized timber harvesting caused stronger compaction of soil, particularly in wheel−ruts, where the recorded values of soil cohesion exceeded 3 MPa (fig. 1). For the technology with farm tractor for skidding, the greatest soil compaction was also encountered in wheel−ruts, reaching up to 2.5 MPa. With regard to both logging technologies, the analysis of variability in penetration resistance of the top 10−cm soil horizon revealed a statistically significant increase in soil compaction in wheel−ruts when compared with other measuring points along and nearby the skid track (fig. 2). The employed technology of timber harvesting and the degree of soil cohesion in wheel−ruts were proved to be correlated. In respect of the mechanized variant, the mean value of soil penetration resistance in the top 10−cm layer counted up to 2 MPa and was significantly greater than the one in motor−manual technology, where it did not exceed 1.3 MPa. No significant differences in soil compaction in reference to the investigated forest habitats were revealed, though it was stronger in fresh mixed coniferous forest, with regard to both technological variants. The motor−manual technology caused the increase in soil penetration resistance by 2% on the roadside, nearly 20% in the middle of the skid track and over 70% in wheel−ruts. While the mechanized logging operations resulted in 30% increase in soil cohesion on the roadside, 55% between the wheel−ruts and over 250% inside the wheel−ruts (fig. 3).
