Opis:
The therapeutic potential of the forest results mostly from the accumulation of volatile organic compounds produced by the forest plants. These compounds are found in the highest concentration in the air space between the soil and the tree canopy and they are important cofactors in the regulation of various physiological processes of the human body. Both, the chemical structure as well as the regulatory function of these substances, are already known, or have been studied by pharmacologists and biochemists. What is not known, however, is the spatial variability in concentration of these compounds in the air of forest ecosystems and its dependence on the genetic or developmental structure of the biocenosis. This presents a challenge, which can only be overcome by forest research institutions ready to adopt new methodology, which is needed in order to study the spatial distribution of therapeutic potential within the forest environment. The main outcome of such research should be updated guidelines for the management of silviculture. Some concepts useful for establishing appropriate research programs are suggested in this paper. In line with these concepts, aspects of evolution of the human ecological niche idea associated with forestry management, and the idea of the human place in nature, are also discussed.

Opis:
The paper presents the issue of conservation of species diversity of the Białowieża Forest in the context of both natural and human−related disturbances. These disturbances, in the authors’ opinion, were the main factor that shaped the unique species diversity of this area. Examples of natural disturbances occurring in the Białowieża Forest include the impact of wind, insect outbreaks and, to a lesser extent, fires. On the other hand anthropogenic disturbances are related to various forms of forest use, which historically took place here, i.e. grazing by domestic animals, beekeeping, charcoal production, and recently also forest management. Currently, in the situation of rarity and unpredictability of natural disturbances, as well as due to a significant decrease in human impact on forests of the Białowieża Forest, there is a risk of decrease of biodiversity, which is related to the process of natural succession, homogenization of the forest and the decline of favourable habitats for the development of some organisms. This particularly applies to the so−called ‘open forest’ species that are dependent on sunny places in forests. Historically these species found favourable conditions in the Białowieża Forest in many sites, where traditional forms of forest use took place, but also in areas used for traditional forest management. At present, it is necessary to adapt forest management on the one hand and nature conservation on the other, in order to meet the requirements of diverse groups of organisms, both requiring passive as well as active methods of conservation. The authors postulate the necessity of introducing a diverse conservation strategy in the Białowieża Forest.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to recognize the threats to waterside stands and their ecotones growing on the banks of the Bełdany Lake heavily utilised by tourists. The method applied included of stand and bank inspection along 33 300 m of the shoreline, as well as polling tourists. The signs of damage caused by tourists were found every 330 meters of the shoreline, on average. The reed belt was most threatened. The places of its depletion can be spotted every 450 meters. Also waterside stands are exposed to penetration. A belt of 50 m or more in width is penetrated by about 60% tourists. The damage caused consist of soil compaction, disappearance of natural herb layer species, harvesting of wood for making fires, damage to trees, leaving litter in forests, or making fires.

Opis:
Scots pine is the main forest tree species in Poland. In this study we investigated variation in growth among 20 populations at two common−garden sites of the IUFRO 1982 provenance experimental series after 35 years of growth. The sites managed by the Forest Research Institute are located in Wyszków and Sękocin (central Poland). Populations show great diversity in the productivity and stem straightness depending on the geographical origin. The character of variability confirms the results obtained on other experimental plots established within the IUFRO 1982 series. In terms of growth, populations such as: Pornóapáti, Ardennes, Haguenau, Neuhaus as well as Miłomłyn, Rychtal and Bolewice are the best. Populations from the south of Europe grow in Polish conditions very poorly and have a low survival rate. Some of the well−growing populations (Ardennes, Pornóapáti and Haguenau) probably comes from selected stands or seed orchard. Stabilization of ranging for the best and worst populations can be observed after 15 years of growth (fig. 1). It follows that in growing experiments, conclusions about the breeding value can be drawn after 15 years. Polish populations such as Miłomłyn, Rychtal and Bolewice are growing very well and can be the basis for further selection work. Obtained results can be used for future breeding, forest genetic resources conservation and also for the other research like dendrochronology and better estimation of the seed transfer rules of forest reproductive material.
